I really super love the solo in time out of mind

anyone seen the making of documentary for aja? they talk about the different guitarists they went through trying to get a good solo on peg. (and play a couple i think)

Their version of "East Saint Louis Toodle-Doo" is one of the best guitar tracks ever though.

"Kid Charlemange" is by far and away my favorite guitar solo, by anyone, ever. Even among Dan solos it stands out. I used to play in a bar band and we did this song, and I always played it note for note because it was too perfect to mess with.

I think Royal Scam is their hottest guitar album in general. Even little moments like the echoing lines during the verses in "Sign in Stranger" are great.

PS: Best Steely Dan guitar solo in a non-SD song: Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" (Baxter).

Bodhisattva (Denny Dias) - I've always loved this sort of "epic" 60-seconds give-or-take solo that starts off fairly simplistic and straightforward rhythmically, then grows more convoluted, alternately racing and chasing the tempo, threatening to fall apart entirely, then miraculously resolving itself at the exact proper moment.

Reeling In The Years (Elliot Randall) - Similar to an abbreviated "Bodhisattva", but even more reckless, if anything.

My Old School (Skunk Baxter) - Huge clumps of gnarled chord-clusters and fat handfuls of strings: the audio equivalent of a small animal chewing its own trapped leg off.

revived, cause ive come to the conclusion that the guitar(S) in "king of the world" is the best recorded guitar playing ever.

I was just listening to "My Old School" today and realizing that the guitar solo on that really smokes, which I'd never noticed before.

Good to see some "King Of The World" love on here, I've said on several threads before that it's just about my favorite SD song.

SO many great ones; like, all of them! But I'll go with:

It's Skunk, Becker plays bass on that and most everything on Countdown and Can't Buy a Thrill

Becker started playing more guitar after Katy Lied.

The solo on The Royal Scam really blazes, though it's very short and simple. I love that opening pull off lick.

It's always cool, and one of the jazziest things about the Dan, how the guitar solos (mostly in the later albums) lay on top of totally different chord progressions than the verses and chorus.

"Aja" (the song). Isn't it technically impossible to play? And Denny Dias had to overdub himself in order to get it right?
