yeah peg

I really super love the solo in time out of mind

anyone seen the making of documentary for aja? they talk about the different guitarists they went through trying to get a good solo on peg. (and play a couple i think)

I have to say their solos aren't what I've been listening to most.

Their version of "East Saint Louis Toodle-Doo" is one of the best guitar tracks ever though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 14 May 2005 23:40 (eighteen years ago) link

ok I've had all day to think about this:

1. I Got the News
2. Green Earrings
3. Kid Charlemagne

"Your Gold Teeth II" is Denny Dias. "Reelin in the Years" is definitley Randall.

"Kid Charlemange" is by far and away my favorite guitar solo, by anyone, ever. Even among Dan solos it stands out. I used to play in a bar band and we did this song, and I always played it note for note because it was too perfect to mess with.

I think Royal Scam is their hottest guitar album in general. Even little moments like the echoing lines during the verses in "Sign in Stranger" are great.

PS: Best Steely Dan guitar solo in a non-SD song: Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" (Baxter).

the end of Night by Night is really hot

charleston charge (chaki), Sunday, 15 May 2005 22:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah "Kid Charlemagne" I can remember note for note. Brilliant. "Peg" and "Your Gold Teeth II" probably round out my top 3.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 16 May 2005 14:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Walter Becker's solo in "Hey Nineteen." If anyone else had played it it would have sounded like lite love-jazz.

SO many great ones; like, all of them! But I'll go with:

Bodhisattva (Denny Dias) - I've always loved this sort of "epic" 60-seconds give-or-take solo that starts off fairly simplistic and straightforward rhythmically, then grows more convoluted, alternately racing and chasing the tempo, threatening to fall apart entirely, then miraculously resolving itself at the exact proper moment.

Reeling In The Years (Elliot Randall) - Similar to an abbreviated "Bodhisattva", but even more reckless, if anything.

My Old School (Skunk Baxter) - Huge clumps of gnarled chord-clusters and fat handfuls of strings: the audio equivalent of a small animal chewing its own trapped leg off.

HOLY SHIT I just discovered Third World Man. I'd heard the song before but maybe wasn't paying attention. This song has everthing!! and the guitar is so great. Did Smashing Pumpkins lift guitar parts from this for Obscured and other songs?

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Saturday, 14 January 2006 23:49 (eighteen years ago) link

FUCK NO!!! it was not Third World Man!!! it was King of the World!!!!! although i'm getting tired of it since I've listened to it 40 times since Friday. le fucking sadness. now it just sounds like disco/zydeco/surf guitar crass fusion. fuck me.

revived, cause ive come to the conclusion that the guitar(S) in "king of the world" is the best recorded guitar playing ever.
argue, if you dare..

Zeno, Monday, 15 October 2007 01:55 (sixteen years ago) link

(though it's not a guitar solo)

Zeno, Monday, 15 October 2007 01:55 (sixteen years ago) link

I was just listening to "My Old School" today and realizing that the guitar solo on that really smokes, which I'd never noticed before.

Good to see some "King Of The World" love on here, I've said on several threads before that it's just about my favorite SD song.

This is some very good stuff...we should have a thread for most eloquent, perceptive posters and good examples of their things

Anyway, anyone know why tonight's show was postponed?

Oh yeah,

third world man forever and ever

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 22 January 2011 01:54 (thirteen years ago) link

I've gone on boringly about "Third World Man" long enough in other Dan threads, but, I confess, I haven't noticed the solo. The main guitar HOOK on the other hand...

'everything you did' solo needs more love

"Third World Man" is so fucking progressive

er sorry I meant "King of the World"!

bernard snowy, Saturday, 22 January 2011 16:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I am not the first person to do that on this thread!!

bernard snowy, Saturday, 22 January 2011 16:23 (thirteen years ago) link

there's no way I could narrow it down to just a threesome.

My Old School for sure

is that Skunk or Becker?

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 5 September 2017 21:44 (six years ago) link

It's Skunk, Becker plays bass on that and most everything on Countdown and Can't Buy a Thrill

rock and roll tucci coo (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 21:51 (six years ago) link

Becker started playing more guitar after Katy Lied.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 22:02 (six years ago) link

The solo on The Royal Scam really blazes, though it's very short and simple. I love that opening pull off lick.

It's always cool, and one of the jazziest things about the Dan, how the guitar solos (mostly in the later albums) lay on top of totally different chord progressions than the verses and chorus.

rock and roll tucci coo (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 22:23 (six years ago) link

Yeah, good point.

wtf???

Apart from that one, I'd go with Gold Teeth II and Bad Sneakers

1. Green Earrings - 2nd solo (Elliott Randall)
2. Haitian Divorce - any of them (Dean Parks and Walter Becker)

Haitian Divorce one of the most hilarious solos ever

harbinger of failure (Jon not Jon), Sunday, 10 September 2017 23:57 (six years ago) link

"Aja" (the song). Isn't it technically impossible to play? And Denny Dias had to overdub himself in order to get it right?
