I only have You Fail Me - what do people think of that?

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 16 July 2005 10:25 (eighteen years ago) link

You Fail Me is OK but Jane Doe is incredible.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 16 July 2005 10:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll have to check it out.

Anyone here like Coalesce? They make good bedfellows to Converge.

mzui (mzui), Saturday, 16 July 2005 10:43 (eighteen years ago) link

that coalesce album 0:12 revolution in just listening's pretty good.

latebloomer: lazy r people (latebloomer), Saturday, 16 July 2005 13:44 (eighteen years ago) link

did coalesce pick their name from looking up "converge" in the thesaurus?

Coalesce's Zeppelin covers are ok!

Jane Doe is up there with the best of its style. In fact, the only 'metalcore' album I like more is Botch's We Are the Romans. The epic feel is def. the key to both, I think (tho WAtR takes this even further than JD w/the unaccompanied Gregorian chanting on the last track). So yeah, OTM.

Thing is, nothing else they've done comes close, even if most of it is pretty solid When Forever Comes Crashing-on. The split with Agoraphobic Nosebleed is maybe the best of the rest, even if it did put me off on ANB for years.

that hidden electronic track on We are the Romans is teh awesome

I've been on a converge binge since reading this thread and they are definitely one of my favourite bands of the 00's. 'When Forever Comes Crashing' is great but 'Jane Doe' just tramples over everything.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 18 July 2005 16:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Agreed. I didn't like it much at all when I first heard it, but after a few dozen listens it became amazing. Jane Doe, on the other hand, was great the first time I heard it and didn't get any better. So I guess You Fail Me, though not the better album, was more personally rewarding.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 00:30 (eighteen years ago) link

It really IS a total grower. I was so excited to hear it when it came out and then i never played it. But lately it just sounds completely cool. i really wasn't expecting anything as good as jane doe. i figured that was a lot to ask for. but it's good on its own. and as i said on another thread, one of the few recent albums i can think of that i wish was longer!

Both Jane Doe and You Fail me are great.

Someone said Coalesce cover Led Zepellin, well so do Converge!
They dropped in a sneaky cover of the ambient bit from whole lotta love the twice I've seen them, near the end of their set.

'conduit' from when forever comes crashing is amazing

'THIS TIME IT'S WAR!"

so much aggression and brutality, hard to fathom that its subject matter addresses a failed relationship/heartless girl/unrequited love.

but yeah, jane doe is phenomenal. the s/t closing track is like a big, lumbering, ugly-yet-oh-so-beautiful monument to a broken heart. never fails to enthrall me.

'last light' from you fail me is also mesemerising. builds up to the climax of all climaxes and then suddenly withdraws its energy.

there is no disputing mr. bannon is for real. never heard a vocalist so closely replicate the wounded anguish of a wild animal.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I was listening to Petitioning The Empty Sky the other day. That's not bad, but Jane Doe is still the best one I've heard. Haven't got the new one yet.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Much much better, Mickey. It's up there with Jane Doe for me.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:16 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm very excited by the positive buzz you're giving this, brigadier :)

i really like 'you fail me', but it's a pretty rough affair at times. some of the songs could do with a bit of padding or fleshing out as they seem to lack a cohesive, fully-realised song structure. that's all part of the record's charm and rugged appeal, ultimately, but it makes it harder to familiarise oneself with the songs' changes and developments.

Bought it the week of release, have it in my iPod, but haven't listened to it in awhile. They're just one of those bands I only get in a mood for rarely, and then they own my world for a week or so. Next week could be that week!

No Heroes is such a great ALBUM album. every song is just better than the last until by the end i almost can't take it anymore. such a good album experience. what a great band. I felt the same way about the last Harvey Milk album. It just builds and builds and builds...jesus, so beautiful.

This is exactly how I feel about the Bergraven album on Hydra Head. The guy is taking one-man black metal someplace really special. Check it out if you haven't.

...and i can report that i totally love 'no heroes'

and i agree with scott about the pacing of the album. so much strong material towards the end.
also, the first 5 tracks go by in the blink of the eye - still obviously devastating. but then the title track totally kicks your ass left, right and centre. it's one of those classic converge tracks with hook all over it.

'trophy scars' recalls 'last light', which was my favourite track from 'you fail me'. totally anthemic and 100% heart.

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 15:35 (sixteen years ago) link

CONVERGE SHARES NEW VIDEO
Watch "Precipice / All We Love We Leave Behind" at Pitchfork:
http://pitchfork.com/news/54784-converge-share-precipice-all-we-love-we-leave-behind-video/

Converge is proud to release the film/video for "Precipice / All We Love We Leave Behind", directed by Craig Murray (Converge, Oxbow, Narrows). Both tracks appear on Converge's 2012 full-length, All We Love We Leave Behind, out now on Epitaph/Deathwish Inc.

The video was conceptualized by Murray, using the narrative put forth of the death of a canine companion as told in J. Bannon’s lyrical writings. Murray uses powerful visual metaphor and imagery to communicate the crushing weight of loss and the strength of unconditional love the song explores.

"We all disagreed about what the strongest songs were, and which songs made for the best record. I think we're all equally unhappy with what ended up on the album. It was a compromise. Some of the songs on that album are actually some of the weakest ones that we recorded, and some of the ones that aren't on the album are the strongest. We're just not exactly sure how we're going to release them yet. Whether it's B-sides, or an EP, we don't know yet."
