I miss how "Take Away" was one of the last of those spare, spacey, ballads in which she and Timbo specialized.

this is her best album, easy

I don't know why I prefer Da Real World, I just do - I think it may be the fact that it's more "generic" in a late 90s R&B sense, the way she pushes the vocal harmonies in particular to make the songs as topographically dense as the grooves are.
But then when I'm listening to So Addictive its swagger seems like the best thing ever.

i definitely prefer da real world, and idk if i prefer it as a whole album but the best half of supa dupa fly is better than ...so addictive, too. and under construction is more consistent all the way through.
i remember at the time it was a pretty huge stylistic shift for her - she SUDDENLY STARTED BELLOWING, basically (and so did the beats) - a pretty brave move, "get ur freak on" basically needed to be as incredible as it was for it not to grate, and make me miss her old calmer stuff.

i love so addictive cause it's like this big global party and missy was never as outsized personality-wise as she was here. pretty much every song was an in your face banger but none of them sounded like none of each other. it doesn't have the problem the first two albums have, which is they get really samey at times. it's like on those albums timbo unleashes a bag of new tricks but then repeats them throughout the album and it's kinda like is that all? you know he's more capable than that cause he just showed you how imaginitive he is, but he doesn't keep it up. whereas on so addictive, every goddamn track has a completely new set of ideas from the last, but cause of the continued party vibe, they all hang together.
i can never get into the first two albums them as wholes, even if i love some individual tracks. her later albums all come off a bit shtick-y, like she was trying hard to show you how much of a character she is, instead of just being one like she is here (totally f/w under construction tho).
but really it comes down to the fact that like half my top 20 missy joints are on this album

i mean, damn these songs all happen in a row:
"Dog in Heat" (featuring Method Man & Redman)"One Minute Man" (featuring Ludacris)"Lick Shots""Get Ur Freak On""Scream a.k.a. Itchin'""Old School Joint""Take Away" (featuring Ginuwine & Tweet)"4 My People" (featuring Eve)"Whatcha Gon' Do" (featuring Timbaland)

so :( that she fell of the face of the earth
― bernard goony (The Reverend), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 23:55 (thirteen years ago) link
"whatcha gon do" is def this album's most underrated banger. that bassline ~~~~
idk people always say this but i'm kinda glad, it was all getting a bit grim right at the end and her heart obviously wasn't in it. if that's the case i'd rather she just have a nice time chilling and counting her money and reflecting on her cultural status. tbh if the long-threatened sixth album did emerge i'd be a bit wary of it.
