YES - i'm a sucker for videos that are entirely computer graphics tho (see also Junior Senior's 'Move Your Feet' and HELLO SHYNOLA generally)

its the Tron of rock videos - supposedly all pioneering and innovative in 1983 and perhaps it was, and the song really wouldnt seem as great without it.

I think VH-1 Classic is great--at their best they play the long-since-passed stuff and manage to keep it relatively eclectic and interesting. I was in the gym the other night and it was on one of the tv channels. My jaw dropped wide open when I saw them play Kansas' "People of the South Wind"...wow, guess that means they really WILL play anything.

As for the videos themselves, some of them were really evocative back then. How about the one for The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black", with the kid and the freaky Roller Coaster dude? Another one I think about is Dire Straits' "Tunnel of Love", with the guy and the girl escaping down the canal. I think it was a time when videos strove to be more than just adverts/eye candy.

Karla DeVito did backing vox for Meat Loaf and BOC. Not familiar w/ her solo career.
Blotto of course did "I Wanna Be a Lifeguard."

When I was in elementary school, I owned probably less than a dozen records, and I didn't listen to the radio an awful lot, so most of the music I listened to was on MTV. So...I associate almost *all* of those songs with videos, unless they were completely boring (i.e. no plot) and unmemorable. One that comes immediately to mind is Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart," with those creepy flying Jawa-eyed choir kids. That's some scary shit for a 7 year old to watch.

I dunno, man, but I can't help but smile when I think about that bullet going through the card (pretty slow bullet, isn't it?) when they sing, "When the bullet hits the bone." Those action music videos were fun, weren't they? Yes's "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and "Undercover of the Night" by the Rolling Stones come to mind. The latter one was pretty disturbing and had a kind of Michael Mann-action vibe, with people being shot execution style, those creepy masked gunmen, and the car driving into the church.

Ahh. Remember "Close (to the Edit)" by Art of Noise?

She got some play time with "Cool World", and later on her cover of "Midnight Confession" (pretty kickass). Of course, her main infamy is from the video for "Paradise for the Dashboard Light".

All I can remember is the hook to their song went "I'm a citizen, and I've got the right to know..we are citizens".

Do you know Landscape, Jody? "My name is Norman Bates/I'm just like other guys/My name is Norman Bates..." There was another popular one too called "Bates Motel", can't remember who did it offhand, but it went "(check in check out) I'll turn my home (check in check out) I'll turn my home into Bates Motel Bates Motel..." I didn't know about Psycho back then, but I figured two creepy videos independently referencing the same motel probably meant something. :)

Actually, whenever they show the video for that nowadays, it's the edited version. There's a lengthier version where the song stops in the middle, the band members turn into various animals, and it starts over again. Then, there's different 'nasty' footage as well with the guy in the story (e.g., washing his face with worms).

Definitely a great video, and yes, very very Michael Mann. I was shocked too that they would play a video like that, with the pretty graphic execution scene. By comparison, when they "World Premiered" George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" video, they really hyped it up, when there was absolutely nothing that was racy/tantalizing/explicit/whatever about the video. You could tell they had reached the SELL! SELL! stage by then...

Vaguely (maybe). Is that the one where they operate on the guy, or am I thinking of "The Devil Made Me Do It" (another post-"Twilight Zone" video)? They also had one other MTV video after those two, but I can't remember what it was called.

I really blocked out a lot of videos though. My mom remembers me doing a mean imitation of the Papa Don't Preach dance, which apparently really stuck in her head as upsetting cos I was like 7 then, I think.

But the one that really fucked me up was XTC's "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead". You know, the video with a the faux JFK stuff in it. I haven't seen it again in the 11 years since that day, but man I still think that video is cool.
