The Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary"
I used to watch this one video show after school every day. The show played this particular video an inordinate amount. I eventually bought Love and defaced my pencil case with carefully reproduced Cult logos.

I do remember seeing, for the first time, videos for Belfegore's "All That I Wanted," the Mission's "Wasteland," the Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary," Killing Joke's "Eighties" and the Sisters of Mercy' "Walk Away" and each being positively earth-shaking experiences for me. That just doesn't happen anymore, somewhat sadly.

They just played Visage's video for the song "Visage" and it blew me away. Especially when he rips down the poster for the old album only to reveal the poster for the new album. Then they played the Dennis DeYoung video where he goes home on the train to his hometown, gets off the train and is met by people who you think at first are gonna beat him up cuz they call him rock star and ask him to sing songs and he goes up to them and takes off his sunglasses and says, "Kiss Me" and they all laugh and they are actually old friends. They have fun down by the water and they play football at a barbecue and Dennis asks about his old flame but she has gone off to Chicago and Dennis looks sad about that. He ends up leaving town again, but before he does he gives his kid brother the keys to his mustang and the kid brother asks him where he is headed and Dennis says, "I don't know. Maybe Chicago". he tells his brother to take off and he does with wheels spinning. The video is even better if you pretend that everyone in it is gay.

Röyksopp: Remind Me

YES - i'm a sucker for videos that are entirely computer graphics tho (see also Junior Senior's 'Move Your Feet' and HELLO SHYNOLA generally)

Dire Straits 'Money For Nothing'

its the Tron of rock videos - supposedly all pioneering and innovative in 1983 and perhaps it was, and the song really wouldnt seem as great without it.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 6 April 2003 18:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

I dunno, I thought the song was pretty cool. ("Wow, he's singing about color TVs!")

I was 8 years old when MTV came on the air, and in its first two years, at least, it was definitely some great stuff. What impressed me most was the eclecticism. The first video was The Buggles, but the second was...Pat Benetar. You might see Judas Priest and Icehouse and Vangelis back-to-back. And all those acts that are long forgotten today (anyone remember Blotto, Citizen, Landscape, Karla DeVito). They would also "shut down" periodically, and you would have five minutes of screensaver (i.e., random, archival stock footage) and Tangerine Dream-like background music, which only whetted your appetite for more. Over the next years, though (I would say starting around 1983 or so) they became gradually more calculated and predictable, gravitating towards only the hitmakers (The Police, Duran Duran, etc.) and the Pretty People Who Sell Albums, and gaining regular commercial sponsors.

I think VH-1 Classic is great--at their best they play the long-since-passed stuff and manage to keep it relatively eclectic and interesting. I was in the gym the other night and it was on one of the tv channels. My jaw dropped wide open when I saw them play Kansas' "People of the South Wind"...wow, guess that means they really WILL play anything.

As for the videos themselves, some of them were really evocative back then. How about the one for The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black", with the kid and the freaky Roller Coaster dude? Another one I think about is Dire Straits' "Tunnel of Love", with the guy and the girl escaping down the canal. I think it was a time when videos strove to be more than just adverts/eye candy.

Here's another one: Golden Earring's "Twilight Zone". What the hell is that one about? Though nothing graphic (by today's standards) happens in the video, I was always impressed by the dark and brutal mood it manages to keep up. The end shot with the guy tied up and blindfolded on the wall, is just a terrific, haunting image.

Blotto, Citizen, Landscape, Karla DeVito

Karla DeVito did backing vox for Meat Loaf and BOC. Not familiar w/ her solo career.
Blotto of course did "I Wanna Be a Lifeguard."
Citizen sounds awfully familiar.

I have always enjoyed the video for "Rump Shaker" by Wreckx N Effect.

I must go on the record and say how much I love music videos. In many cases, I love the video so much more than the song. My digital cable service costs an arm and a leg, but it's worth every penny. Where else would I see Cafe Tecuba, Sean Paul ( sean paul up the wazoo! Every 5 minutes it seems-but to me that is an awfully long time to go without "Get Busy" cuz I never tire of it and then I walk outside and every other car in Philly is blasting it for all the world to here), Lil' Flip and Baby AKA the Number One Stunner videos. Recently, though, I have become addicted to my music choice digital radio channels. There are so many that I flip back and forth blindly in case I miss something good. Perfect to have on when I'm reading the latest issue of Murder Dog or a good Muriel Spark novel. Here is what they just played on the audio channels that I get. They give you lots of fun facts too. Sorry if this is too long, but future generations might need to know this stuff:
Classic disco-George McCrae-Rock Your Baby

Sounds Of Seasons-Tarkomaz & Spiralman-La Notte(Pilar Et Miguel Mix) (Sounds Of Seasons is my favorite channel next to the Metal one. All they play is drug music. Stuff that I probably would never buy and stuff that I like like Massive Attack and Broadcast. Stuff like Saru. Never heard of him. But his Bamboo Shadow is pretty good and I get to learn that he bought his first casio keyboard when he was 13, that he has a bachelor's degree in psychology and that he was once in the industrial band Inner Fear)
Musica Latina-Zigro-Cancion Para Una Esposa Triste
Salsa Y Merengue-Monchy-Dos Locos
Rock En Espanol-Molotov-Here Comes The Mayo
Latin Love Songs-Ricardo Arjona-Dame
Mexicana-Simba Musical-Que Bonito Bailas
They got rid of some of the Latin channels. They used to have a cool Brasilian one and one called Folklorica. Same with Jazz. They had a good trad jazz one. Since I started writing this they have played Kix, The Kicks, Sylvester, Behemoth, Orbital/Goldfrapp, Square Pusher, and the Four Tops.

I so agree with the kudos for "Twillight Zone" by Golden Earring. Remember the "sequel" video for "When the Lady Smiles"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 6 April 2003 21:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

How many of you associate songs (esp. songs from your "formative years") with their videos?

When I was in elementary school, I owned probably less than a dozen records, and I didn't listen to the radio an awful lot, so most of the music I listened to was on MTV. So...I associate almost *all* of those songs with videos, unless they were completely boring (i.e. no plot) and unmemorable. One that comes immediately to mind is Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart," with those creepy flying Jawa-eyed choir kids. That's some scary shit for a 7 year old to watch.

Joe wrote: Here's another one: Golden Earring's "Twilight Zone". What the hell is that one about?

I dunno, man, but I can't help but smile when I think about that bullet going through the card (pretty slow bullet, isn't it?) when they sing, "When the bullet hits the bone." Those action music videos were fun, weren't they? Yes's "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and "Undercover of the Night" by the Rolling Stones come to mind. The latter one was pretty disturbing and had a kind of Michael Mann-action vibe, with people being shot execution style, those creepy masked gunmen, and the car driving into the church.

Ahh. Remember "Close (to the Edit)" by Art of Noise?

Ernest P. (ernestp), Sunday, 6 April 2003 22:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Karla DeVito did backing vox for Meat Loaf and BOC. Not familiar w/ her solo career.

She got some play time with "Cool World", and later on her cover of "Midnight Confession" (pretty kickass). Of course, her main infamy is from the video for "Paradise for the Dashboard Light".

Citizen sounds awfully familiar.

All I can remember is the hook to their song went "I'm a citizen, and I've got the right to know..we are citizens".

Do you know Landscape, Jody? "My name is Norman Bates/I'm just like other guys/My name is Norman Bates..." There was another popular one too called "Bates Motel", can't remember who did it offhand, but it went "(check in check out) I'll turn my home (check in check out) I'll turn my home into Bates Motel Bates Motel..." I didn't know about Psycho back then, but I figured two creepy videos independently referencing the same motel probably meant something. :)

Joe (Joe), Sunday, 6 April 2003 23:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes's "Owner of a Lonely Heart"

Actually, whenever they show the video for that nowadays, it's the edited version. There's a lengthier version where the song stops in the middle, the band members turn into various animals, and it starts over again. Then, there's different 'nasty' footage as well with the guy in the story (e.g., washing his face with worms).

"Undercover of the Night" by the Rolling Stones come to mind. The latter one was pretty disturbing and had a kind of Michael Mann-action vibe, with people being shot execution style, those creepy masked gunmen, and the car driving into the church.

Definitely a great video, and yes, very very Michael Mann. I was shocked too that they would play a video like that, with the pretty graphic execution scene. By comparison, when they "World Premiered" George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" video, they really hyped it up, when there was absolutely nothing that was racy/tantalizing/explicit/whatever about the video. You could tell they had reached the SELL! SELL! stage by then...

Joe (Joe), Sunday, 6 April 2003 23:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

I only connect them if I want to. If I can think up a better image, I will. The only way in which I think MTV has been bad for me is when I never hear the song away from the video. Once I do I can judge them separately but sometimes I miss key elements of song if I've only seen it on TV. Never liked Def Lep's "Love Bites" until I heard it without the boring video, for instance.

Remember the "sequel" video for "When the Lady Smiles"?

Vaguely (maybe). Is that the one where they operate on the guy, or am I thinking of "The Devil Made Me Do It" (another post-"Twilight Zone" video)? They also had one other MTV video after those two, but I can't remember what it was called.

the last new videos to fuck me up where QOTSA's "Go With The Flow" and the two Kelly Osbourne ones. It's a rare thing.

I don't have th QOTSA album, didn't think it would be my thing. Caught that video halfway through last night and had no idea who it was 'til the end. Impressed enough to consider buying.

I remember being ridiculously excited for the Sisters of Mercy's "This Corrosion", and I don't even know why because it's a terrible video, but every time I hear the song, every image comes out in my brain.

I really blocked out a lot of videos though. My mom remembers me doing a mean imitation of the Papa Don't Preach dance, which apparently really stuck in her head as upsetting cos I was like 7 then, I think.

I haven't had MTV in my house for a long, long time (early 80s when I was a toddler), but every once in a while I'd get to see it at my Grandma's house. One afternoon in 1992, I was over there with my dad, and we decided to spend the whole afternoon watching MTV. They played alot of videos back then. I remember seeing the first two Nirvana "Nevermind" videos, a couple Guns'n'Roses ("Don't Cry" and either "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" or "November Rain"), Sir MixAlot's "Baby Got Back", Metallica's "Enter Sandman", Salt'n'Peppa's "Let's Talk About Sex", and Queen's "We Are The Champions" (It was a live montage, and was aired because some kids wanted to sing it at graduation somewhere, and they were voted done by the PTA because Freddie Mercury died of AIDS. It was on MTV news)

But the one that really fucked me up was XTC's "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead". You know, the video with a the faux JFK stuff in it. I haven't seen it again in the 11 years since that day, but man I still think that video is cool.
