when i was in high school and skated and I thought they were *cool* (they certainly didn't chart back then) I liked them... but come on... i think its over.

Why is no one answering this thread?

Fuck if I know about Boston Public. Never cared much more for them but after noting the growing melodicism of their singles, I picked up By The Way on a whim. Both the album and most songs are overlong, but its incredibly pretty. Also, if you can't write good lyrics, you might as well write silly fun lyrics like "Kissin' and a moo-check." I mean, it worked for Love, right? I'd even be willing to say their new stuff is to Love like Interpol is to Echo & The Bunnymen.

Wonderful greatest hits album in the making from their Warner Bros. material. And at least on By The Way, the album tracks are good enough to please people who like their sound.

My apologies to the fans of the earlier stuff, but I like the increased purtyness of it all.

hmmm...i've resisted the temptation to use this thread to bash the red hot chilli peppers long enough. i would just like to say:

fuck off red hot chilli peppers

as dan perry has said: first three albums are classic. blood sugar sex majik and mothers milk has some great moments. the rest is blah.

bahtology is OTM. They are pluperfect awful. Their new CD ran me out of a record store not long ago.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 20 January 2003 01:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Not a huge fan but I own the "important" albums (Blood Sugar, Mother's Milk) I also like a couple tunes on the new one. They don't suck live. Not spectacular, but not worthy of outright contmept.

"Under the Bridge" isn't bad.

Hillel years...fantabulous. Pre-tweaked-solo-album-era Frusciante years...stunning. Shit like "Breaking the Girl" & "Mellowship in B Minor"...excellent.

One Hot Minute -> present-day rejoined-with-Frusciante stuff, not quite enjoyable, but not quite Fred Durst/Courtney Love levels of skin-crawlingly-unpleasant...so a hearty "meh" from me.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 20 January 2003 15:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

It was largely due to hearing the Red Hot Chili Peppers that I stayed away from funk music for three or four years. The sound of their music reminds me of the smell of the changeroom after junior high gym class.

tom (alternate), Monday, 20 January 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like almost anything these days but there's still a tarry vile residue of bands who not only do I still really really hate but I can't even find the words to talk about, I just splutter. This is one of them. I will say that - sorry Anthony - I find their music catastrophically ugly.

Tom speaks with the wisdom of the years.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 January 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

I keep forgetting how much I love "Breaking The Girl". It's probably my favorite song on _Blood Sugar Sex Magic_; like Jane's Addiction meets, um, the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 20 January 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like all the oohs and ahhs on this new one. Liked 'em in the beginning and never got over it.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 20 January 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

If Tom speaks with the wisdom of the years, then I wanna die before I get old! And fly away on my zephyr! With Dani the girl singing songs to me beneath the marquee, overload!

It wasn't the ugliest thing I heard this weekend though. That would be the La's.

lol i've been flirting with the idea of listening to it all morning.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Friday, 6 May 2016 14:21 (seven years ago) link

it's kinda...good? like the "pensive" type single (as opposed to the "give it away" clone type single)...like "by the way" and "scar tissue" mode, but it's got a few more almost pop touches to the production...i dunno it's aight

Rumor has it they're breaking up. Note: this is where that rumor begins.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 May 2016 15:51 (seven years ago) link

Listening to RHCP without Frusciante (or Slovak) is like drinking decaff. It's like, what's the point!?

(Although I'll concede there's some good moments on One Hot Minute)

But... could you imagine a formation in your lemonade? Ho! (Turrican), Friday, 6 May 2016 17:39 (seven years ago) link

Ha, I'm enjoying this too.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Monday, 9 May 2016 01:50 (seven years ago) link

It's a good tune. Don't think I'll be that interested in the whole album, but that's a nice song.

Sounds... fishy.

i kinda feel bad that people instantly go to "relapse" just because a 50-year-old man had to call out of work sick one day. i mean, it's possible, but unless there are other things going on that make people suspect that, i wouldn't even bring it up.

their show at Rock Am Ring (yesterday, after the storm) will be archived here soon: http://concert.arte.tv/fr/red-hot-chili-peppers-rockamring

They should archive it in a time capsule, bury it, then dig it up in 100 years and see how it sounds.

Listening to Californication right now and, aside from marvelling at how such a huge-selling and popular record sounds like COMPLETE FUCKING SHIT, 'Otherside' came on and I was suddenly like "huh, they've ripped off 'Time Waits For No One' by The Rolling Stones" ... I've never noticed it before!

The band knows how to carefully pen an R.I.P. tribute without actually saying anything nice:

Has anyone heard of Addie Brik? She released an EP in 1984 that was produced by Hillel Slovak. This song features Slovak, Jack Irons, and Flea. Not quite like a female-fronted RHCP, but an interesting work. Some serious cultural appropriation going on in this video
