Classic!
If one were to make a CD-R of all the funniest interviews (as in funny to listen to) what would be the essentials? Sometimes it's hard to tell just by reading the transcripts. I've got the Nirvana mp3, the Slayer one seems worth a download, what else?

Total classic. Aside from being funny, he actually does a lot of research into his subjects and constantly comes up with questions that leave them shocked at what he knows... Well, I think that David Cross says it best at 2:10 here:

I watched a couple last night also.. the lady gaga one was cool bc I learned that she loves new kids on the block & she's never heard of andrew wk.. the nirvana one was uncomfortable and as if I needed another reason to dislike courtney love, she refers to Sloan as "The sloan band" at least twice.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 16:20 (thirteen years ago) link

to be honest i watched that last night and i thought courtney was far more normal and courteous than kurdt or noveselic, unless you are just bound and determined to hate her

he is my city's finest, his band the evaporators was one of my favorite live acts when i was a teenager, and he's done so much for vancouver's music scene. when my friend was starting to release albums narduwar was willing to spend hours on the phone with him giving advice about DIY music. he talks normal when he's not in character, it's actually a little jarring to see the switch

I didn't realise that he'd done so much. My favourites are the earlier interviews - the one with sonic youth for instance.

It's a fact that he has done more for local music than practically anyone else. He's put on hundreds of gigs (mostly all-ages) interviewed or showcased pretty much every little band that makes an effort to contact him, helped god knows how many musicians in thousands of ways and done more to promote the history of Cdn punk/rock than anyone.

I quibble with the last sentence though. He is generally less shrill and less confrontational in real life but he's *never* "not in character". He is always Nardwuar.

And he's going to call you up and say "Hey wait I would have done some interviews" and then Rollins will feel left out and do the same thing and you can have the revised edition with everyone's stories at last and retire rich and famous. (I like thinking this is how the world must work.)

I've always known shave and a haircut, from Looney Tunes cues on down/up. The wiki informs me that, among other facts:

The tune has been used innumerable times as a coda or ending in musical pieces. It is strongly associated with the stringed instruments of bluegrass music, particularly the 5-string banjo. Earl Scruggs often ended a song with this phrase or a variation of it. On the television show The Beverly Hillbillies, musical cues signifying the coming of a commercial break (cues which were in bluegrass style) frequently ended with "Shave and a Haircut". It is the most popular bluegrass run, after the G run.

Johnny's Theme, the music that opened The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, famously ended with the "shave and a haircut" flourish every weeknight for 30 years and 4,531 episodes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Hcqb3hAmr8

Les Paul and Mary Ford's Capitol recording of "Magic Melody" concluded with the phrase minus the last two notes ("two bits"). Responding to complaints from disc jockeys, Capitol in 1955 released "Magic Melody Part 2"—consisting solely of the missing notes—on a 45, said to be the shortest tune on record/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2O06pa9mjU

The original version of "Love and Marriage" by Frank Sinatra (recorded for Capitol Records in 1955) ends with the tune.

Evan, Friday, 15 July 2022 14:01 (one year ago) link

"Magic Melody - Part II" even has a discogs entry:
https://www.discogs.com/release/22510415-Les-Paul-Mary-Ford-Magic-Melody-Part-II

The label lists the time as "one second". There's a bit of debate as to whether it's shorter than a split 7" with Napalm Death's "You Suffer" on the first side and Electro Hippies "Mega Armageddon Death Part 3" on the B-side:
https://www.45cat.com/record/pro234

But that was a commercial release whereas the Les Paul single was a promo only. As one of the posters points out one second is shorter than a single rotation of a 45rpm 7", so the songs have to be padded out with silence. Unless the groove didn't cover the whole circumference of the record, which would probably be murder on styluses. Stylii?
