I want to go to the Rocky Horror showing at Bloor Cinemas but I don't have anyone to go with yet. Any Toronto posters going out of curiosity?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 02:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

we're going to go get drunk in a Dunedin graveyard, then go see The Puddle, with special guest FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE, Peter G*tteridge. I'm probably going to attempt to dress piratey. I'm hoping to get some jewels onto Hamish

I've been invited to a party, but have a job interview the next day. And I have no idea what to wear. Aaaargh!

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 10:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

liz why did you put a * in gutman's name, do you think he might do a google search & be PO'd w. you for saying "from beyond the grave"? that seems super unlikely.
anyway : ok now i know the puddle are playing, ok, that's where i'll be i guess.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 11:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

wear a the bride of frankenstein costume.

oh, you meant what to wear to the party?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 11:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

yes that's exactly why Duane! do you think he realises how half-dead/super fucked up he looks?

spectra m, Thursday, 31 October 2002 05:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

plus, I really doubt he would play, it's just the "from the grave" bit brought him to mind

spectra, Thursday, 31 October 2002 05:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

peter g*tteridge did not play. the puddle were very good. i felt sick from eating too much curry.

Miss Laura, Thursday, 31 October 2002 12:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

i will be in my rented flat in a house where a sherlock holmes film was shot. to access you must climb a spiral staircase and the house is surrounded by big trees and damp leaves. that's not an invitation, i'm trying to set a scene.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 31 October 2002 13:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

N., you must dress up on thursday and come to a party.

What? Have I been invited somewhere or is this just general advice?

Andrew - I was at Viva. Was that Crash? I was not on good form though. I'd just seen 'All or Nothing' and waan't feeling v.sociable. I sat and drank my cocktail.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

we are going to free screening of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD ooh brr scary and eating PIZZA PIE.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm going to the supermarket to buy cheap pumpkins.

alix (alix), Thursday, 31 October 2002 17:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

sitting here with the lights turned off not answering the door to anyone.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

wuss. You should rig up some kind of trap to get the little blighters when they come a knocking. maybe hot oil, like people use one their hair. But maybe not.

alix (alix), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

but the thing is no one has actually knocked on the door, I'm getting quite annoyed, like how the hell are they gonna know I'm not answering it, if they don't knock in the first place?

It's more presevation of my sweets and chocolate than anything.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Turn on the lights so it's obvious you're at house, then it's clear that you're ignoring them. Of course, it could be someone else coming to give you fantastic news, so use the spyhole.

alix (alix), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

if i knew where he lived i'd knock on jel's door and run away so that when he didn't answer it there wouldn't be anyone there.

koogs, Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nick: you came to Dublin and went to see All Or Nothing? Surely we have more to offer in local color/abject depression. The weather springs to mind...

Jel- preserve sweets by eating them! Once they're in your lower intestine they're realistically very little the kids can do...

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

...unless they're like Chucky in Child's Play and they rip open your belly.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Andrew, I'd never seen a film in a foreign cinema before. It was something I had to do.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm going to the pub and hoping my house hasn't been burned to the ground by agrieved little shits hopped up on sugar.

tigerclawskank, Thursday, 31 October 2002 18:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thank you.

Ernest P., Thursday, 31 October 2002 20:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am going to make the house all spooky and greet trick-or-treaters dressed as a Victorian widow. I will get them all fat with chocolates and then eat them. MWAHHAHAHAHAH!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 31 October 2002 20:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

This Halloween I have been waiting (in a very cold apartment) for someone from PSE&G to come fix my pipes. Those bastards.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

For Halloween this year, I was an anti-war protester.

Just got back from the big demonstration down outside Parliament. Police presence was downright scary.

kate, Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

I might watch Dead-Alive again.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 31 October 2002 22:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

the best halloween costume ever is a gag from newsradio where joe gets on tiptoes and is "myself, only two inches taller".

once i strapped a hubcap through my belt and went as a wheel.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 31 October 2002 22:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

If Halloween were a little more Pagan and dangerous I might be more into it.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 1 November 2002 00:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Worst Halloween EVER!

Kim (Kim), Friday, 1 November 2002 00:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was gonna go as Bruce Vilanch but I forgot to start growing my beard early enough. And I never got around to buying a frizzy dutchboy wig. Next year.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 1 November 2002 01:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Why's that, Kim? You should have come to Bloor Cinema. It was great fun.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 1 November 2002 04:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nothing really Sundar - I'm probably just overreacting to the usual b.s. at work. But thanks. I actually might have gone too, but I just caught that thread where you mentioned it only about two hours ago. Good thing you had fun at least!

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 18:12 (nineteen years ago) link

we're all going as Brat Packers supposedly, f3licity as Ally Sheedy and me as Molly Ringwald supposedly but I have no idea how to fashion a "Molly Ringwald" costume, also my hair is no longer red and short. Maybe I should go as Demi Moore instead.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 14 October 2004 18:00 (nineteen years ago) link

You should find couple of pink dresses and patch them together Frankenstein-stylee like Molly did in Pretty in Pink.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Thursday, 14 October 2004 18:04 (nineteen years ago) link

ARGH NO NO NO

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 14 October 2004 18:10 (nineteen years ago) link

It would be sufficiently scary for Halloween though!

Demi Moore in St. Elmos Fire would be good, you could have a drug-induced freak out and have Rob Lowe talk you down.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Thursday, 14 October 2004 18:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Otis once told me that Demi in SEF reminded him of me;I can pull it off. Now for the big shouldered suits and the hairspray!

And the Billy Idol mural!

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 14 October 2004 18:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Either The Log Lady or Goatse.

eleven months pass...
I like it.

I'm not going to be anything for Halloween. I'm 27.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 17:32 (eighteen years ago) link

halloween is my total favorite, but i have no idea what to do this year. and what to carve into my pumpkins? last year i made bender, leela and the batman symbol. before that, andrew wk.

halloween doesn't care how old you are.

carly (carly), Thursday, 6 October 2005 17:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Good for it.
I also hate fun.

I am intrigued about the pumpkin though, did people look at it and go "fuck me, that's andrew wk"? Impressive.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 17:39 (eighteen years ago) link

it was the cover of i get wet, with his face carved out, the blood dripping down in pumpkiny negative space.

carly (carly), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:11 (eighteen years ago) link

No fucking idea, although unless I get invited to a Halloween party, deciding on a costume won't be at the top of my list of problems. Already done: Red Riding Hood, wind-up doll, Veronica Lodge.

Carly, when are we going to carve pumpkins?!

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:15 (eighteen years ago) link

maybe the weekend of the 22nd? or next weekend?
the 22nd = pumpkins still in decent shape at halloween.

A back catalog of my Halloween costumes, Vol. I (1984-1992)

I remember nothing in the realm of costumage before age 4, so I'm beginning there:

1984 - A Monchichi. I was in heaven. If you don't know what a Monchichi is, this probably means that you were not born exactly in the summer of1980. For some reason, people outside of that very precise age grouping are completely unaware of the Monchichis existence. The chichis were essentially tree-dwelling, fuzzy cartoon monkeys. Here is a picture of one:

http://static.flickr.com/6/5687699_2e83d36cfe_m.jpg

1985 - Ronald McDonald. This costume was pretty horrific. Plastic, sweaty, and on top of all that involved some type of sweater. In the photos, however, I look VERY pleased with myself.

1986 - a rock star? This is a patchy memory. I'm sure you're familiar with the 80s, childish image of rock stardom. It's mainly to do with putting crazy crap in your hair and dressing like some kind of demento. (Actually, this is fairly otm. How bleeding typical that I had a better idea of what being a rock star meant when I was 6 than I do now.)

1987 - A vampire. This is pretty much my main thing throughout elementary school. The thing I liked, studied, wanted to be, etc. My first foray into vampiricism involved the bane of any serious vampire-dressing child's existence: the plastic fangs. Oh, naivete! I definitely improved as time went on. I was a vampire with little variation from age six to about age eleven, so I'm gonna skip ahead.

1991 - This is the year I really broke out of the mold.

http://www.yellowstonewilderness.com/images/kirk_tux.jpg
I decided to be Kirk Trevor (yes, the conductor of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra) with a twist. I was essentially a PSYCHOTIC VAMPIRE Kirk Trevor, and I carried a baton and spoke as if I had a speech impediment. In re: that last item, I remember my mom being all "oh, Emily, you should leave that out, it's mean" but simultaneously laughing hysterically. I gotta give my child-self some respect for this one.

1992 - A hippie. Not really a stretch for me at that point. I was growing out of the goth period that began around 1st grade and into a dashiki-wearing, flowing locks phase anyway, thanks largely, I think, to the original Broadway cast recording of the musical Hair.

To be continued.

last year i was blossom

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 06:01 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm going crazy trying to come up with an idea. i'm going to a party with mandatory costumes and i'm completely stumped! i always have a hard time deciding what to be.

most recent costumes include: alex from clockwork orange, a drag queen (i swear i'm not a man), a pretty unsuccessful attempt at bjork, and (with a few friends) a litter of kitties.

tehresa (tehresa), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 06:07 (eighteen years ago) link

PIRATES!!!!11

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 06:47 (eighteen years ago) link

my perennial favorite: Business Frog.

pretty simple concept, elegant in its execution: it's a frog, but human-sized, and he's wearing professional attire because he conducts business during the day. all you really need is a frog mask, frog hand mittens, and a suit.

ath (ath), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 06:56 (eighteen years ago) link

i know what a monchichi is, we used to call this kid that looked like an ape one in high school.

bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 09:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Hm, I did manage that Stepford Wife costume after all. This year I might be Axl Rose if I make it to a party.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 09:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Business Frog sounds amazing.

I am debating whether this year's costume should be clever or sexy. Past years I have been a rhinoceros, a chicken, a leper, a nun...Meanwhile all my friends are being cowgirls, gypsies, flappers, and she-devils. So I think this year I should do something that allows me to traipse around half-naked, and not all covered in latex or fake blood.

jxnx (jxnx), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 13:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Maybe I should get a red wig and dancing shoes and go as Aphex Twin?

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 13:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I told Tep the other day how the Halloween thing was nothing/weird to Aussies (it simply doesnt blip on the radar here at all) and he freaked out.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 13:19 (eighteen years ago) link

My current idea for Halloween: Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski. Not the most ambitious costume, obviously, but it would be comfortable and fun, and my hair is the right length. White Russians? Joints? Whale music? Yes.

elmo (allocryptic), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Andrew, find someone to go as MAUDE

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:23 (eighteen years ago) link

adding PSYCHOTIC VAMPIRE as a prefix to almost anything = awesome halloween costume. inspiring!

carly (carly), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 14:26 (eighteen years ago) link

roxymuzak, Sunday, 28 October 2007 15:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I went to a Halloween party carrying a sign that said "NUDIST ON STRIKE." It was a very easy, cheap "costume" and I got a lot of compliments on it. Also, two people asked me to end my strike, which was kind of hilarious.
