i did the vast majority of my listening to tonetta/autotune/thru-you on my ipod; if you can explain to me how voting for a youtube channel is drastically different than voting for a mixtape, i'd be curious to hear.

i would vote for a mixtape that was assembled by/with the artist and features primarily new material -- i wouldn't vote for a mixtape that some DJ or kid with a CD burner threw together to collect a bunch of singles and loose tracks, which to me is the analog to the youtube thing. i'd roll my eyes the same way if anyone tried to vote for "Gucci Mane output for 2009," but then there he actually had proper albums and album-style mixtapes to vote for. i think i'd be far more interested in seeing a poll (or individual's list) of best youtube stuff of a given year than it being shoehorned into a list about a completely different medium, is all. but i agree with jordan that obviously you CAN vote for that kind of thing and it's cool that you have a good attitude about being zinged or questioned about it.

i mean i voted for the Freeway 'Month of Madness' thing, which is basically just a collection of tracks released on a website, but Free released those songs as part of a particular project in a particular order and (i think) approved of the mixtape compilation himself, so that's a gray area but ultimately to me feels more like an album than not.

dora the explaro (some dude), Saturday, 27 February 2010 11:16 (fourteen years ago) link

pretty much agree w/al here, though i think those youtube channels were created by the artists in question? imo they're as valid as any other, i just think it's funny that forks voted for three of them.

in an albums poll how well the artist has put together a collection of songs that works as a collection, be it mixtape or album or youtube channel, is def an important (though not the only) factor to consider for me.

also, as an outsider, i would actually follow & check out a youtube-only music poll, as long as it wasn't shit like "chocolate rain"-type meme bait -- that youtube single that forks picked for the jukebox redemption week was truly great

i'm a little agog at how much ilx/singles jukebox is influencing my music taste this year

forks- I was just saying the same thing to Alex in Montreal yesterday, so it makes sense that our ballots matched up.

Didn't vote for any Youtube channels though. :)

"i would vote for a mixtape that was assembled by/with the artist and features primarily new material -- i wouldn't vote for a mixtape that some DJ or kid with a CD burner threw together to collect a bunch of singles and loose tracks, which to me is the analog to the youtube thing."

okay; without being a dick about it, this betrays a distinct lack of familiarity for the stuff that I voted for.

autotune the news released nine numbered singles on youtube (along with a bunch of other work by the same guy that, while generally excellent doesn't fit into the rubric) that had cohesive thematic and melodic elements that joined the work together (along with a weak intro track and a light outro). Tonetta's absolute flood of material was regularly shut down, pulled from the web and never really self-archived, but it smells to me like a single thought is absolutely running through all his songs... as well as a single drum mix. as for Thru-You, I think I've flogged this piece enough (especially as it's really just a link-heavy rewrite of my singles review), but I talk at length about what makes it special to mein this article; if x=tl;dr: Thru-You was released as a seven track EP on his own site and while it consists of artfully diced youtubes, it doesn't really count as a "youtube collection".

I'm going to assume that loving a video game soundtrack doesn't require qualifiers? Or no? Happy to talk about that too.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 27 February 2010 17:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm pretty shocked Tonetta didn't make it, though, to be honest the dude kind of has an advantage with the youtube format in that I voted for his output as "album" of the year when he's had years to write all those great songs and make all the great videos, this is just when the collection finally made it to the outside world. It's like if Death had released a box set coming out of obscurity. "Drugs, Drugs, Drugs" is still song of the year for me, though.

yeah i'll confess to a lack of familiarity -- i rolled my damn eyes at the first autotune the news thing i saw and avoided it ever since. again i don't understand how a group of singles, 'numbered' or otherwise, constitutes an album -- obviously asking something to be mass-produced on CD to count is a little too old-fashioned, but if at the very least they'd put it out as a zip file somewhere I'd understand it more. the Lonely Island album was on my year end list (though not my ilx ballot), but I never would've thought to put 'SNL digital shorts 2008' or something on a list for a previous year. countless worthwhile artists have been releasing large amounts of good songs in non-album formats throughout the history of recorded music, and I don't really see the point of shoehorning just about any of those into album lists, be it YouTube or whatever. not trying to be a dick, I've just never been a fan of the "an album's whatever i say it is" school of thought.

al, my enthusiasm for the material makes the question of "is this an album or not?" moot to me in the same way that the freeway stuff gets a pass from you. in my mind, listing a collection of autotune stuff is VERY much like listing a mixtape or a demo; it's a low cost alternative to going out and finding a deal that still allows you to get your story told.

the lonely island guys have been doing online shit for forever and if snl hadn't picked up dude, that album almost certainly WOULD have been released as a serious of youtubes! t-pain shows up in both LI and autotune's videos only the autotune guys can't afford a boat.

i understand your gut response, but it comes off a little like "it's okay if i like the material but pretentious if i don't"

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 27 February 2010 20:27 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess I don't see the point to being pedantic about whatever an "album" is or why it even matters that we have to keep Best of the Year collections to whatever that definition is. What's the benefit? I'm not sure why we have to be so rigid about coloring within the lines when they're our lines in the first place.

I wasn't making loopholes or exceptions for the stuff I like, I was explaining why I listed them (i.e. if Lonely Island never got signed to a major label and just put their stuff on web videos, or if Freeway's website series never got compiled as an official mixtape, they wouldn't have been on my year-end list, they'd just be songs I liked and wrote about/endorsed elsewhere).

plus the whole thing of taking a medium that is like 50% visual and putting in the context of a bunch of strictly audio recordings is a big can of worms for me. i realize this is totally OCD or worse to really these kinds of "the line must be drawn HERE!" standards about it, but that's just how i feel.
