http://drownedinsound.com/news/4139319-watch--wild-beasts-kcrw-session
a 7 song KCRW session live on film. turns out they're bloody brilliant live. also some excellent chatter between songs which has made me love them *even* more.

piscesx, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:17 (fourteen years ago) link

saw them again when they were in brooklyn last week. they played two dancers i and ii. and they are still fucking brilliant.

love watching them pluck their guitars. so much sound coming out of the four of them live.

shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:22 (fourteen years ago) link

glad you saw both two dancers!

i'll have to watch that session. they seemed like really nice guys when i saw them; it was a small but extremely enthusiastic crowd and it seemed like they were genuinely surprised and grateful.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:24 (fourteen years ago) link

they dress funny

shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:28 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah they have weird haircuts too--i was like are these guys gonna be pretentious but then they were really sweet

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 01:29 (fourteen years ago) link

just idly checked into these guys' tour schedule, apparently they played mpls a month ago.

goole, Friday, 12 March 2010 17:09 (fourteen years ago) link

getting dragged to these guys tomorrow night so i figured id check out the album (from what id heard it sounded like something id not really be into, but what i heard really was wrong)

plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:46 (fourteen years ago) link

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:49 (fourteen years ago) link

plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:50 (fourteen years ago) link

see me, about a month ago, in this thread

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:55 (fourteen years ago) link

you really just say that they have weird haircuts and that they play both versions of the same song(?)

plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:58 (fourteen years ago) link

shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:59 (fourteen years ago) link

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:01 (fourteen years ago) link

so they're kinda like the chameleons?

plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:05 (fourteen years ago) link

anyway i like their sound, its kinda noirish, detailed but not busy, widescreen but not pompous, and shit can dude sing really, or is their two singers (cos that is range otherwise)

plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:06 (fourteen years ago) link

imagine the smiths doing a bunch of talking heads pastiches, if morrissey's voice were an octave higher. maybe.

there are two singers but i can't work out which is which!

goole, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:07 (fourteen years ago) link

really?

shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:08 (fourteen years ago) link

it's pretty obvious? there is the falsetto guy then the deeper voice

shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:08 (fourteen years ago) link

the falsetto sounds like... the falsetto of the deeper voice. i just figured the guy had range. *shrugs*

goole, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:09 (fourteen years ago) link

wait on two dancers ii you can hear them at the same time, kinda dont like the falsetto guy

plax (ico), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:09 (fourteen years ago) link

¡omg!

plax (ico), Saturday, 27 March 2010 11:43 (fourteen years ago) link

Sadly they are not like The Chameleons.

I've been enjoying 'Wild Beasts' a lot recently though and I'm surprised there's been so little talk of it on ILM. It's an interesting album that definitely rewards repeated listens. At first I thought a lot of the songs ended quite prematurely without really building into anything but the more I've listened the more I've appreciated the restrained economy at play. The album sounds lush in terms of atmosphere. I know its maybe only a matter of them being contemporaries but I hear a lot of similarities to the sound of the XX LP. They're playing Primavera this summer and after watching some live performances on YouTube I'm keen to check them out. The earlier remarks about the drums being far more prominent live seem to be the case. It's a shame the drums on the album lack a bit of the punch they seem to have live. Still, good stuff I say. Took my ears a while to warm to the vocals though.

Sadly they are not like The Chameleons.

Nope, but they share a certain vibe with The Associates.

ILM's gusto for these guys is well-placed, I picked up their two albums and there's a few songs that grabbed me immediately but others were slow burns but the hooks stayed in my head. Well done!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 18:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I've read a lot of things comparing them to The Associates but I've never really heard them express any interest themselves, I know they are massive Junior boys fans.

My friend said I would love them pitching them as a mix of The Associates and Sparks who are two of my five favourite bands ever. I was really disappointed when I checked out a few of their early singles but he then convinced me by putting The Old Dog on a compilation which after a few listens I totally fell in love with. It was a perfect choice as it's one of the slow burners that I kept going back to. I bought the album straight away and I couldn't believe I had ever dismissed them, especially his vocals.

I can't think of any new bands from the last couple of years that I love anywhere near as much. The way they brought out a second album that was so perfect so quickly is just an amazing achievement.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 18:46 (fourteen years ago) link

I also think they sound a bit like Climate of Hunter. One thing I didn't expect going to see them was that the guy with the deep voice would be such a boner-inducer, also how overheated and groin-thrusting their basslines were gonna sound. Falsetto guy's voice comes across a million times better live, and the drummer really owns it, amazingly different textures by the drummer all the time, its like third to last song and he start wailin on the cowbells, last one all of a sudden he's playing with malletts. Also the really dreeaammy guitar parts that are like all trancey and synthy and the parts where the film flies off the sprockets for just a second before they're right back on the beat, face forward. Comparing them to XX misses out on how melodramatic, how swoony camp and terrifying they can sound. Good band!

I'm looking forward to this, I still love both the albums. I'm hoping they bring some of the pomp back from Limbo Panto.

The new single is very pretty but I wasn't blown away. I was disappointed with Two Dancers the first few times I heard it so maybe this will grow on me too.
