Pastels 7:30-8:10
JAMC 8:30 (3 hours and a half to go)

StanM, Friday, 22 June 2007 16:03 (sixteen years ago) link

LOLZ! Thanks v much Stan, I am now going tonight :D

I had to - the Pastels are supporting!

Colonel Poo, Friday, 22 June 2007 16:06 (sixteen years ago) link

(oh no, if they suck it'll be my fault now)

StanM, Friday, 22 June 2007 16:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I will hold you personally responsible.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 22 June 2007 16:34 (sixteen years ago) link

*hides*

StanM, Friday, 22 June 2007 16:38 (sixteen years ago) link

It is well sold out, BTW.

PJ Miller, Friday, 22 June 2007 16:49 (sixteen years ago) link

It is well not sold out.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 22 June 2007 16:50 (sixteen years ago) link

what happened to the 1990s support slot?

that said, pastels + mary chain = my dream bill albeit 15 years too late (and £20 too expensive)

also, main act on at 8:30?

(d'oh on the date)

koogs, Friday, 22 June 2007 17:13 (sixteen years ago) link

1990s are playing AFTER the JAMC according to the discussion on this fan forum:

http://sct.amniisia.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3041&start=52

StanM, Friday, 22 June 2007 17:17 (sixteen years ago) link

OK, there were no tickets available via the RFH website last week and tickets going for big(ger) money on eBay, so I assumed it was sold out. My apologies.

Anyway, who will Report Back?

Only 15 years, Koogs?

PJ Miller, Saturday, 23 June 2007 08:01 (sixteen years ago) link

i saw two of the encores- 'vegetable man' and 'you trip me up'. sounded great. band looked miserable.

Did they play "April Skies"???

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 23 June 2007 11:50 (sixteen years ago) link

No April Skies, I'm afraid. Setlist was something like this:

Never Understand
Head On
Far Gone and Out
Sidewalking
Snakedriver
Catchfire
Happy When It Rains
Dead End Kids* (old Freeheat/Jim solo song)
Some Candy Talking
Between Planets
Blues From a Gun
Cracking Up
All Things Must Pass
Teenage Lust
Just Like Honey
-----------------
Reverence
Vegetable Man
You Trip Me Up

*Not sure when this was played in the set - am fairly sure it was around this point

Mystery lady (definitely not Scarlett Johanson) on Just Like Honey. I was right up in the balcony so I had no idea who.

Bocken Social Scene, Saturday, 23 June 2007 12:09 (sixteen years ago) link

it was Nina Persson from the Cardigans - more here:

You're probably right and I just got lucky with returns. I got a seat right by the stage on the left hand side underneath the boxes.

Pastels sound was a little muddy at first, but they played Nothing To Be Done so I was happy. JAMC did look a bit miserable, but well that's to be expected! No storming offstage like last time I saw them.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 23 June 2007 15:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Catchfire

omfg this is probably one of my all-time favorite songs

HI DERE, Saturday, 23 June 2007 15:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Nina gets around (isn't she on the new manics single?)

> Pastels sound was a little muddy at first

no change there then 8)

> Only 15 years, Koogs?

that'd be 1992, the almost gold lp, so yes. although anytime before then would also be fine, obv. after that it's touch and go. actually, '92 is a bit late for the pastels, is their jad fair period, when stephen seemed to stop singing. did see them a couple of times then and a couple more after (both supporting b&s, new york and camber sands) and kinda enjoyed them both times. but, yes, again, earlier would be better better.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 25 June 2007 10:56 (sixteen years ago) link

but you can't get around in an aeroplane!!!

Mark G, Monday, 25 June 2007 11:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm now being told it was the girl from the Duke Spirit, which makes more sense of what I saw and heard onstage.

They're playing Brixton Academy on September 7th.

Bocken Social Scene, Monday, 25 June 2007 11:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Who, the Duke Spirit or the JAMC?

Masonic Boom, Monday, 25 June 2007 11:16 (sixteen years ago) link

JAMC. Must start posting more coherently.

To make up for it, here's a link (that will inevitably not work..)

Bocken Social Scene, Monday, 25 June 2007 11:24 (sixteen years ago) link

£25! Plus £5 service charge! Ouch!

But I suppose I'm a grownup now. I better suck up.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 25 June 2007 11:29 (sixteen years ago) link

LOL oh well I'd rather have seen them at Brixton Academy than at silly seated festival hall, although it was good. Maybe I can take Mrs Poo to this and see them again. She wasn't in the mood to go out on Friday.

Colonel Poo, Monday, 25 June 2007 11:32 (sixteen years ago) link

I thought about buying seated upstairs tickets. But then I snapped out of it!

The best thing is, this is like 10 minutes from my house! Hurrah!

Masonic Boom, Monday, 25 June 2007 11:33 (sixteen years ago) link

We went to see the Ramones, at Brixton Academy, back in.

Upstairs seated was all that was left. Better than nothing, obv, for that one. Their last UK gig ever.

Mark G, Monday, 25 June 2007 11:36 (sixteen years ago) link

But no. Apart from bands who are going to split up and/or die, never do that.

Mark G, Monday, 25 June 2007 11:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I had seated tickets for the Stooges, that was weird. But they were complimentary so I can't complain. Seated behind Kevin Sheilds, even weirder.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 25 June 2007 11:38 (sixteen years ago) link

think the last twice i've seen them were both brixton academy gigs - rollercoaster tour and acoustic(!) support for cocteau twins.

koogs, Monday, 25 June 2007 12:49 (sixteen years ago) link

one month passes...

"All Things Must Pass" is classic JAMC. This is one of those bands who'll crank out passable-to-good-to-great shit as long as they feel like it.

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 00:36 (sixteen years ago) link

one month passes...

who else is going to see them at Brixton Academy this Friday? do shows there usually end before the closing of the tube?

alex in montreal, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 12:23 (sixteen years ago) link

they probably will, yes (kicking out time = 11ish, tube = 12 ish)

am still in two minds. ticket prices high. nobody to go with.

koogs, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 14:56 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm going! I am meeting Dream Machine people beforehand in a pub.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 14:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i was wrong about tube, forgot the victoria line closes early these days:

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/5508.aspx

From Brixton
22:11 northbound all stations to Walthamstow Central
22:21 northbound all stations to Seven Sisters

plenty of slow buses though. take one to stockwell and get northern line from there is quickest. overground trains available to victoria too, every 20 minutes.

koogs, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 15:07 (sixteen years ago) link

(i also thought it was saturday. oh um)

koogs, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 15:07 (sixteen years ago) link

the prices are high, but i figured i'm in london for the weekend, might as well catch some shows (and they were pretty good at the summercase festival, fwiw). anything good going on saturday night?

if you see a lonesome vietnamese dude, come say hi!

x-post: thanks koogs!

alex in montreal, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 15:08 (sixteen years ago) link

May I just add that Richard Hawley's version of "Some Candy Talking" is very lovely indeed?

bham, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 15:11 (sixteen years ago) link

The Victoria line will be closing early Mondays to Thursdays from 23 July to 22 November to allow line upgrade works.

It should* be running until late on Friday night.

*Who knows what state the network will be in when the strike finishes.

Bocken Social Scene, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 15:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I was thinking of going to this, although I did see them at Meltdown a couple of months ago. But I'm going to be in Birmingham (at a Python Conference, no less) so I can't.

onimo, Thursday, 6 September 2007 10:57 (sixteen years ago) link

From The Times review of the RFH gig in June:

Jim screwed up the beginning of Snakedriver, and they had to start Just Like Honey three times before he located the correct key and entry point for the vocal at the same time.

It's like they've never been away :)

onimo, Thursday, 6 September 2007 10:58 (sixteen years ago) link

It's like they never been to rehearsal, more like!

Mark G, Thursday, 6 September 2007 11:01 (sixteen years ago) link

one month passes...

Free tickets (*$7/each service charge) through goldstarevents.com for tomorrow at the Wiltern in LA.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 06:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Can I just say how much better JAMC sound with Loz on drums... He's reined in his natural freneticism into the fills and breaks, but man those few seconds where he cuts loose...

Set list tonight:
Never Understand
Head On
Far Gone And Out
Catchfire
Sidewalking
Snakedriver
Dead End Kids
Happy When It Rains
Some Candy Talking
Between Planets
Blues From A Gun
Cracking Up
All Things Must Pass
Teenage Lust
Sometimes Always
Just Like Honey
Vegetable Man
You Trip Me Up
Darklands
Nine Million Rainy Days
Reverence

Mystery lady tonight was Miranda Lee Richards
