I realize she may be too archaic sounding for some of you:

I'm listening to Anita Tijoux, from Chile, right now, and liking her a lot. She did a guest verse on Julieta Venegas's "Eres Para Mi" a couple of years ago, and now her U.S. debut CD, 1977, is coming out in April.

tijoux's also playing new york in april as well on a bill including pacha massive and mad decent's brooklynite maluca.

glad it didn't take long for chile to get mentioned, i've been so into what they're doing for a couple of years now. doesn't seem to get so caught up in beef/bling/swag/etc so much that it sacrifices the creative / fun / four-elements etc side of things.

one of the first big chilean hip-hop groups from the 90's (and according to wikipedia one of the most influential across all of latin america): tiro de gracia

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftY1L_W4PpQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hukt-QYv6lE

they've been broken up for a while now, but the mc juan "pincel" sativo has still been doing his thing (and carrying the tdg name with him at times), but hasn't really had any good beatmakers behind him, and for a minute seemed to be heading into puffy territory... luckily recently he paired up with [also chilean] producer nick calaveras for their recent single "vete"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezND5Ii7YdM

calaveras did a few things with ceaese hiperkinetiko, that did a pretty good album "planeta mutante" a year or two back, came off as something not entirely unlike an amateur neptunes at times

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsxKiZqY_kk

organismo soulbeat. didn't put down their release "maceidonea" for a long time. chill smokeworthy type material.

in the dubstep / bloghouse / etc world this guy 'douster' out of argentina has been getting attention lately, with material out on zzk + mad decent records. the thing that excites me about it is that he apparently has connections with the neighboring chilean scene, already having done dubstep + dancehall remixes of tracks from hip-hop group zonora point, and hopefully he'll be able to bring some light to the other groups around.

i'd think the biggest current export is dj raff, already having toured the states a few times.

LA's Akwid were always my faves. Start with Proyecto Akwid, which is the first actual Spanish language stuff they did. "No Hay Manera" was an LA hit I think.

Kind of an interesting video (at least for one viewing) but the music is about as boring as it can be. I do like the Kiss shirt. Sorry, unperson, but with rare exceptions Mala Rodriguez's music is a bore, at least if you can't understand the words.

yeah the first single for the new mala is pretty eh (the music sounds like a rework of bad romance) but otherwise the album is actually pretty good (although this should probably go under a hip-hop/pop thread)

Yeah, I was listening to some of it yesterday (it's already floating around) and I think I like it more than her last album.

I think the beats are really boring and there's hardly anything going on over top of them. I'm afraid I'm too uninterested to give it another chance and find out if I'm wrong. (I've already deleted this from my PC.)

(although this should probably go under a hip-hop/pop thread)

Hey! We're allowed to go moderately off-topic. I think Spanish-language hip-hop should be allowed on this thread, since I let reggaeton in, although I guess I could have stuck it on your Spanish-language hip-hop thread.

it's kind of huge, she's got great hip-hop and global bass producers at her back (crookers, el remolon + villa diamante, el hijo de la cumbia); with the patterns of buzz around her i'm expecting tijoux levels of exposure in the english press

NPR Alt-Latino writers love the 2012 Ana Tijoux cd (but mainly for the lyrics). On my one listen I was underwhelmed by the slicker production and the duets. Maybe I will give it another listen or 2.

curmudgeon, Monday, 17 December 2012 17:14 (eleven years ago) link

It sounds a bit better on 2nd listen, and if I spoke Spanish I'd probably like it even more. Note-Spotify has her first 2 albums under Anita Tijoux and La Bala under Ana Tijoux

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 26 December 2012 15:45 (eleven years ago) link

eh, she's kind of a default go-to thing to love in spanish hip-hiop at this point. i didn't keep the recent album around but might give it another shot
