Damage Control on divergence of humor wrt to AC Transit fight.

I don't think it was the post that sparked that, it was the dogged back and forth "making a point" that followed that led to some needlessly heated ad hominem.
FTR, I personally don't think it necessarily merited a tempban either, but both ddb and cutty did keep baiting the bear for no particular reason.
Deep breathing till the end of the day plz and let's do a quick reassessment tomorrow; all of us (myself included) wouldn't be hurt by an ILX day off.

i think what brought the thing to a head was that it was on a LOL thread and the elements of race and violence are not so lolzy for everyone.
My guess is that if it had come up on a separate thread it wouldn't have been an issue for anyone.

I couldn't understand most of what they were saying, I just saw a young guy walk to the front of a bus to punch an old guy and get his ass beat.

Regardless of what reason the video was posted for, I don't really get what's funny about it. Two guys get into an angry, racist argument on a bus, then the younger guy (apparently) hits the older guy, and the older guy beats him up. You can actually see the blood on the bus seat in the video. To me the whole thing is just sad and stupid, and I can't see wtf is so funny about it? And DDB posting a pic that makes fun of how the black guy pronounces "ambulance" while his mouth is full of blood is just bad taste. There's nothing funny about real life violence. Especially when it has an racist element like here. I'm not sure if people should be banned for it, but I don't get why they thought it's appropriate to post this stuff in a "LOL" thread.

I am going to recuse myself from this discussion aside from this post.

ddb was tempbanned essentially for posting "in character". I expect people interacting with moderators on moderation issues to behave like adults and I will not tolerate it when they do not. This is nothing new and has been my default moderation stance since whenever it was that I fist volunteered to be a moderator (possibly 2002?).

cutty was tempbanned for not dropping the issue after saying repeatedly he was going to drop it. I understand that this comes across as harsh, but he also had been told that the context around posting that video was bannable and this was after a decent-sized argument with a completely separate group of posters who objected to it.

I will abide by whatever action the site moderators take.

I would also like to know who all of the people I have been trigger-happily banning are? The only ones I know of, aside from today, are an anonymous/new poster who started a insult poll about who the most boring poster on ILX is and r|t|c, who spent several threads insulting me out of the blue before directly yelling "ban me" at me, which history will show I always comply with. (I also unbanned him the next day.)

There is something funny about people who initiate violence getting their butts kicked.

Start a fresh thread about it on any other board (bearing in mind that it has the potential to be a somewhat tetchy topic and without trying to reincite the exact same argument with the same mod) and have the conversation there and everybody should be okay.

Maybe for you there is. I don't find violence funny at all, regardless of who started it.

I'm seriously not comfortable with one person deciding what content is bannable when it isn't openly bigoted. Even more frustrating because there's nothing for anyone who objects to do except not post here - that's why we trust mods to exercise their judgement and only step in when absolutely necessary, IMO.

No, it's personal thing. I've been beaten up enough times in my life to know there's nothing funny about violence, regardless of who started what.
Maybe you think he had it coming and feel that it was justified, but I still don't see what makes it funny. It's just sad. Every day people die or get permanently injured in fights like that.

It's sort of grimly amusing to see everyone pulling the "what, I don't see what's so racist about this?" reaction on a board where we can have a thousand-post thread about the racist overtones of a bottle opener.

No. But even in the cases where I fought back, had someone filmed it and put it on the Internet for laughs, I just wouldn't have understood that. I don't think real-life violence is funny, ever. If some of you think that way, I guess we just disagree on a very fundamental level.

I can confirm I was not banned. I didn't know it was being discussed on the noise board because I don't hang out there. I posted it (in an admittedly trite way) because I was actually interested in the way the video polarizes opinion elsewhere. I was momentarily pissed off with Dan for locking the thread but then I posted a couple of cute animals on the cute thread and I felt fine.
