Nhex - will send you a steam message next time (p.s. I'm complete crap with everybody except for Balrog, who I've maybe reached average with - still got a lot to learn myself / possibly too old to properly develop the reflexes for these games). I do want to learn some of those other games too - in particular Garou & one of The King of Fighters (98?), but have never really found the time (despite buying the Xbox360 versions of each). Actually been thinking of making a GGPO thread...

there were some interesting developer interviews although i can only find one right now:

http://www.capcom-unity.com/s-kill/blog/2010/02/16/super_street_fighter_iv_dev_blog:_systems_and_character_balance

i'm not following the megathreads on neogaf or srk however.

Cozen - if you're reading this, there's apparently now a way to get GGPO running fine on a Mac with Crossover...

Does anybody know of any videos featuring a good Fei Long player / is there any such thing? I was fooling around with him tonight (for the first time?) and he felt exceptionally limited.

I've mostly been working with Guile though & feel like I'm starting to get a little bit of a hang on him (though not enough to comfortably go online). I don't know if he's exactly considered a shoto(?), but finally having a projectile to play with is kinda nice. I've also been learning a bit of Chun Li - I'm a little surprised to see she is ranked high tier - there must be something I'm missing there too...

Justin Wong won a tournament as Fei Long: http://www.youtube.com/user/FrameAdvantageDotCom#grid/user/0CF22BB5569552A8

abanana, Saturday, 20 February 2010 11:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Those matches were fun to watch since you don't see too many Fei Long matches. That said there was a lot of sloppiness for both players, pretty far from the best tournament matches out there. Fei feels pretty weak in SFIV, though, like so much of his offense gets easily stuffed and he's not quite fast enough. Timing on the rekkas feels weird - even Justin Wong was missing a ton of the hit confirm follow ups. Also, I hate that chicken wing input, always have. Still a fun character to play, regardless.

Nhex, Saturday, 20 February 2010 13:21 (fourteen years ago) link

thanks for the links abanana, I just watched a few of those / interesting stuff. It does seem like one of the key ingredients the best players have is a great understanding of spacing and how to make small adjustments to their spacing quickly to gain the advantage.

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 20 February 2010 17:08 (fourteen years ago) link

Played a couple of hours of Ranked last night after being away for about a couple of months... wow those skills deteriorate fast! Or maybe there just are a lot less noobs still around. I think I won 1 for 5 on average.

Nhex, Monday, 22 February 2010 22:53 (fourteen years ago) link

I've been trying to do the normal challenges in the trial mode. Level 4 for most of the characters is still kind of like a wall for me. I can do parts of each combo, but to put it all together, so far I always get frustrated and move on - but I'm planning to keep working at it. I can remember when level 3 stuff used to be pretty tough, and now I usually breeze through those. It's kind of like a whole other game inside the game? I'm definitely at the point where I realize I pretty much gotta learn the timing with those strings though if I want to really get any better (and I do). It's pretty much the same feeling as to trying to perfect a run in Trials HD.

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 03:14 (fourteen years ago) link

I went through so many of those damn trials - far more than I thought would ever happen, I actually completed Normal and got through probably 75% of the Hard level ones. On one hand it is kind of exhilarating when you finally nail one, but on a greater level I'm sometimes annoyed just thinking about it. I can't pull off those links in a real situation more than a tiny fraction of the time.

Got through so many of those Hard trials by basically grinding - just mashing the buttons in sequence so many times over and over and over (seriously 50-100x on many given L4/5 Hard) until I was lucky enough to nail the proper link timing. I know I'll never ever get Viper or Fuerte's trials or a stupid link like Zangief cr.short x4. At least most of the Normal level trials are useful and worth learning though, I am happy those are in there (though I remember some shit being almost ridiculous there too, like Fuerte's and Balrog's).

Thing is, though, I think the concept is GREAT because no other SF game has even approached the idea of training players to get better! At most they'd put in a dummy practice mode. Even those flimsy Soul Calibur single player modes went further in teaching people different facets of the game than any previous SF. (Here are some flying basketballs, go parry!) I hope for SSFIV they are a little more thoughtful about it - it's a great addition to the home games that can only get better and more useful.

Nhex, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 04:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I feel like it's helping me, and I'm definitely learning as I try to work through the trials, but if they'd just added in an example of what the move would look like if you performed it correctly, it would speed up the process a lot. Sometimes the "descriptions" of what you're supposed to do are kind of vague (a bit of a puzzle game there?). Definitely not planning to tackle the hard ones though.

I don't know why I've suddenly got back into this game as much as I ever was - maybe more...

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 06:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I got through 4/5 Gen ones last night, but I am never going to even attempt the one that has seven steps and requires a completed, perfectly timed seven-hit Gekiro to finish it off

Why did I buy this? Why did I think I'd be any better now than I was 20 years ago? It's just a constant source of humiliation for me.

nate woolls, Friday, 5 March 2010 13:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah on my few tenative forays back online I've been straight battered by dudes who play Ken and do shoryuken over and over; Gen is pure masochism when yr execution is rusty/inherently shit

I can do an eight hit gekiro OK now though

MPx4A, Friday, 5 March 2010 13:55 (fourteen years ago) link

It's a hardcore game, but if you put in the time, I think pretty much anybody can get at least okay with it & have fun. You've got to put in some time though - it's not something you can start out playing causally and have a blast (despite how it was originally marketed). Finding a character (or characters) that suit your play-style is one key. Keeping in mind that every character has moves that counter the moves of every other character and learning all that stuff is another.

For instance you've got to block down & back if you're in range of a Ken throwing out endless shoryukens, one of the most easily punishable moves in the game as you should be able to hit him on the way down (after a successful block) or right after he hits the ground (if he did a medium or heavy srk) you can meet him and throw and he can't even tech out of it, I believe - block two or three of those srks and they will stop. If you have meter, you can also easily punish a blocked srk with a super or ultra, at least with most characters.

Reading srk is a good way to learn a lot, if you're puzzled about a particular move that keeps beating you - they have threads for every character http://www.shoryuken.com/forumdisplay.php?f=241

Nhex, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 03:50 (fourteen years ago) link

is the hori fighting stick 3 worth 30 dollars? i'm not crazy into fighting games and i've heard some complaints about this stick, but it seems like a good price.

abanana, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 06:31 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm hardly a stick expert, but I've had that stick for a few years and it's fine. In fact, I just tested it out with a few games of Super Turbo (since I haven't used it for a while) and had no problems. The buttons are a little mushy maybe, but they work, especially for non-expert play. It's worth giving a shot at the price - honestly, I can't play fighters or shmups without a stick anymore, so for me, some kind of stick is essential. It makes everything so much easier and less tiring, even an inexpensive stick like this makes these games a lot more fun. If you have a backwards compatible ps3 it also works on ps2 games, unlike the more expensive Madcatz SFIV sticks that came out last year.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Also I was happy to note that at 11:30 on a Tuesday night I was still able to get a match of Super Turbo Remix in five seconds on the ps3 against a complete scrub. Glad and surprised new people still seem to be playing.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:54 (fourteen years ago) link

OK I'm going for it. And I do have a PS3 with BC so that's good to know.

abanana, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 07:57 (fourteen years ago) link

loooooooooooool at hakan, he looks kinda fun (despite his second ultra)

cozen, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 08:34 (fourteen years ago) link

I've got a similar Hori EX2 which is fine, 30 bucks seems pretty reasonable

Maybe now that they've revealed all the characters, Shoryuken.com will no longer consist entirely of excitable weeaboos saying "beast" and "hype" every four seconds

MPx4A, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 10:31 (fourteen years ago) link

lol at hakan's pass the basketball around the torso move

But this Freddy Mercury number is not Dudley. Not in the slightest.

Does the Street Fighter development team honestly think the refined and debonaire gentleman that is Dudley would dress like a rockstar with his shirt unbuttoned down to his pants?

I understand the cache of making a pop culture reference, that's fine. But DO NOT impose it on a character if it clashes with the character's style and personality.

I am forever grateful to the Street Fighter development team for giving us Dudley, but this alternate outfit is not doing right by Dudley. He deserves a respectable alternate outfit that is true to him.

get a job imo

Cozen - are you going to pick up SSFIV, or are you still burned out? I'm sure the netcode still won't be able to support cross continental play, but the new 8 man tournament mode and endless battle mode (if you can get 8 friends together) sounds like it'll add some fun, and a good forum for practice / learning.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:43 (fourteen years ago) link

Nhex, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:51 (fourteen years ago) link

So now that Sagat is nerfed I'm guessing Zangief will be one of the best characters.

abanana, Thursday, 8 April 2010 05:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Nerfed how? And Gief was already one of the best characters, but his matchup against Seth seemed to ruin him for US tournament play.

Nhex, Thursday, 8 April 2010 06:46 (fourteen years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTrgoojWZng
4:20 onwards. He has less health and his uppercuts do almost no damage.

abanana, Thursday, 8 April 2010 07:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh OK that's definitely a nerf. Considering that's from a few weeks ago, they don't much time if they're going to tweak it more. Maybe just that secondary Ultra does pitiful damage. I wonder what the heck's going on at 4:55, though, he's doing something that uses up a super stock.

And what's up with Juri's Ultra in the first match? I guess it's like Makoto's where it's a timed ability?

Nhex, Thursday, 8 April 2010 09:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Sagat has a charge move that increases the attack of his uppercut

Juri's ultra is a custom combo that lets you link everything

MPx4A, Thursday, 8 April 2010 09:44 (fourteen years ago) link

Of course, I was wondering why that didn't go to Rose.
