I think "an historical" etc is widely deprecated, yes, though it seems to be one of those hypercorrective things that people do to try to sound right. I can't believe you really want to write "an hotel". Why?

I'd never heard that, Laurel. And I'm not sure it holds up because you're more likely to pronounce the "a" in front of "historical" (and related words) as "uh": "uh historic moment," "uh historian of the Civil War."

Re pronounciation of "a", I doubt "uh" is any more likely to be used before historic than any other word. I'm not up on my regional linguistics hallmarks, but isnt the ay/uh distinction partly geographic?

Agree with you there. I'm unaware who actually pronounces "a" as "ay" in contexts other than wanting to emphasize the word.

The distinction between "thuh" and "thee" has to do with whether it's before a vowel or not, but "a" has already solved that with "an."
