so Donnis -- who i kno because he once freestyled w/ pill on east village radio -- has signed to atlantic http://www.xxlmag.com/online/?p=70413

which means that what we saw last year w/ dudes like wale @ charles hamilton getting signed to major deals is hitting the southern hype machine

someone get big krit's publicist on the phone

OMFG the source archives! shit i totally remember looking at lot of those unsigned hypes, i still have some of my old issue..

honestly that shit was like manna from heaven when i got every new issue...i lived in a bumfuck nowhere small town but my friend's dad owned the local grocery story so we got him to get it from the magazine distributor if we promised we would buy it every month, he would just get like 2 issues and hold it for me.

it was weird man back then you couldn't find out about shit in little towns, except for MTV raps every day after school and w/fab 5 freddy on weekends.

the old reginald c denny era was the SHIT...i'd love an archive of those like faux mad magazine joke illustrations of like NWA and shit as cartoon characters in the back.

honestly j0rdan you make me mad when you diss the source, you have no idea what it meant back then. you are just used to be able to read every dickhead blog in the world about everything imaginable.

hahah i wasn't dissing the source!! i obv understand its importance & place in history. i didn't open the link that zvookster posted because i just assumed that "thesource.com" was a website for the source as it stands now aka the black us weekly.

nagl wayne (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 February 2010 20:04 (fourteen years ago) link

okay so "thesource.com put up archives" is a lot different than "omg thesource.com" which has a photo of lebron james on the front of his homepage

MY BAD (not really)

nagl wayne (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 February 2010 20:06 (fourteen years ago) link

I dunno, Jordan and I are the same age (I think) and I started buying the Source in... 2000? Benzino and Mays had already made it fucking horrible by that point and it seemed to get worse with every copy I read until I gave up and just read HHC and got broadband. Elvis was a hero to most etc.

80085 (a hoy hoy), Monday, 15 February 2010 20:09 (fourteen years ago) link

My bad, I think the first Source I bought was 2001 (Redman was on the cover, after just releasing Malpractice?).

80085 (a hoy hoy), Monday, 15 February 2010 20:10 (fourteen years ago) link

I WASN'T DISSING THE OLD SCHOOL SOURCE I WAS DISSING THE CURRENT SOURCE AND THE PRESUMED IDEA THAT THEIR WEB SITE WOULD BE OF SOME VALUE. IF ZVOOKSTER HAD ELABORATED THAT THEY SOURCE HAD PUT UP ARCHIVES THEN I WOULDN'T HAVE MADE MY SARCASTIC POST

i wanted to listen to that banks but after i made it through with one whole minute without hearing a verse i just stopped trying -- funkmaster flex is one annoying ass motherfucker

gibbs & pill is predictably very good -- pill really gets him tho, dude can just spit

no idea what's going on w/ that husalah track -- sounds like some jerk shit & the rapping sounds kinda off

i still care about lloyd banks, at least that track, it's nice!

pill/gibbs was okay not totally feeling it.

hustlah seemed ok

great to see shawnna back! she's great...though i hate to see her biting that goddamn minaj accent in parts, she's a way better rapper than that, it's beneath her.

i remember the interview with T-Pain where he said he named the album 'epiphany' when he saw the word for the first time and didn't know what it meant and when he looked it up he had one and then he put the dictionary definition AT THE START OF THE ALBUM and i was all like awwww heart

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 20:19 (fourteen years ago) link

the xxl with gucci on the cover has this cool feature where current rappers ask rakim questions -- idk how long they've been doing this for but some of the guys asked some dope questions

the gucci interview was okay, it kinda sucks that every interview with him only talks about jail or jeezy -- i thought that maybe we were past that angle but i've never seen anyone ask him about recording habits, influences, the thinking behind his songs, how he interacts with his producers, how he makes so many original songs etc etc -- the closest anyone has gotten to it is asking him "how have you been able to stay hot while in jail" to which he inevitably says "i just worked hard" and they don't prod

the issue also had a super lol photo spread of jim jones and STYLES P modeling clothes -- i have no idea why this happened. couldn't all these magazines save money by cutting out their "fashion" and video games sections? or does that mean no more rocawear ads?

the alley boy mixtape is like... really Epic in the truest sense of the word, not just as a synonym for "great". it's like a jeezy album

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 05:43 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i know, part of what i really like about it is that it has a interesting mix of single statement songs about jewellery and cars etc, but he's also obviously an underdog and that struggle comes through quite often and leaves him seeming quite hurt and vulnerable.
i think that apparent duality is kinda what makes it like a jeezy album and hence 'epic'.

ianmaxwell, Thursday, 18 February 2010 13:39 (fourteen years ago) link

agree, and it emphasized all the things i hate about fellow atl hype victim b.o.b. and his own tape, which is just utter garbage and completely lacks in direction but especially in identity. i don't think i smiled once through the whole thing whereas definition of fuck shit had me fully engaged start-finish.

i'm kind of in love with the alley boy tape. it might just be because i bumped the life out of 'trunk muzik' but it feels like my favourite mixtape of the year so far. the gucci comparison upthread is otm, and although he's not his equal lyrically he's sure got the songwriting thing down and his double-time flow is great. i like the epic-ness about it, how it never lets up in terms of energy.

united arab amirites (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 18 February 2010 14:18 (fourteen years ago) link

i dont really love the alley boy tape although certain tracks on it are next level. esp 'play your position'. good lord that beat. it needs an all star remix w/ boosie/gucci/gotti. and like ... kurupt or someone.

as a rapper dude is kind of boring tho. like a cross between dro's enunciation & gotti's subject matter but w/out gotti's personality or dro's skillz. i dunno. this is a good tape & i think the best comparison w/ jeezy is that hes like a dude punching out of his own league
