i much prefer usher in ballad or mid-tempo roll, his vampy funk songs don't really do much for me

birdman mumia (J0rdan S.), Friday, 12 February 2010 08:06 (fourteen years ago) link

roll = mode*

maybe i'll listen to "caught up" again, i always just skip it

birdman mumia (J0rdan S.), Friday, 12 February 2010 08:06 (fourteen years ago) link

it's my favorite Usher song. easily.

voted for "Can U Handle It?"

otto günne (The Reverend), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 12:57 (fourteen years ago) link

worthy choice

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 17 February 2010 13:09 (fourteen years ago) link

it's altogether worrysome that only 3 ppl have posted in this thread

otto günne (The Reverend), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 13:46 (fourteen years ago) link

i didn't see this poll until today. haven't listened to this in ages, at the time i remember thinking the singles overshadowed the rest of it but i'd prob think differently. between "can u handle it" and "throwback" i think.

it is so weird how these polls are just not even on the radar of most of ilx

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 18 February 2010 00:56 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean it's not a fucking obscure album or anything

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 18 February 2010 00:56 (fourteen years ago) link

it really is

truth hurts is a solid second -- i love how it goes to that finger-snap bridge-thing for the second verse

it's also a nice counterpoint to 'confessions'

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 00:59 (fourteen years ago) link

haha yeah, i was thinking that if i told a bunch of people i know that i'm obsessed with this album they'd look at me sideways and it's sold like 15 million copies or whatever

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 01:00 (fourteen years ago) link

big ups to the rev for off-offhandedly mentioning that he was digging this album recently for motivating me to check it out

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 01:01 (fourteen years ago) link

i really think that, like my birdman junya thread, polls that start, close, and have their 24-hour warning bump at 2am are just not going to have high visibility

mildly haunted every time i hear usher say "raw dog" (some dude), Thursday, 18 February 2010 01:01 (fourteen years ago) link

tbh when glancing at this in site new answers i thought it was abt the newest album and zinging it as 'single-free'

yeah this is probably part of the thing

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 01:02 (fourteen years ago) link

but there are so many difft time zones surely?

tho i've basically accepted that ilx is dead 2 me in british time, i barely even check it then

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 18 February 2010 01:06 (fourteen years ago) link

seems like maybe u have an inflated sense of the size of the ilm r&b contingent?

plus poll threads kind of suck. i can't think of too many ones i've seen that led to interesting discussions.

my point is that this album should be some ghettoized r&b niche thing

wait what does this mean, don't all polls close at the same time (7pm eastern)?

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Friday, 19 February 2010 03:32 (fourteen years ago) link

do they? i dunno i thought they closed at the same time they opened. 7pm eastern is somewhat off-peak hours anyway!

not to be a dick but seriously how long you been here to make this kinda statement dogg?

mildly haunted every time i hear usher say "raw dog" (some dude), Friday, 19 February 2010 05:50 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i mean i'm not surprised that not much came of this thread, but idk how else to start a thread about a 5 year old album w/o putting some sort of spin on it

& tbh, a lot of my favorite threads on ilm are nerdy poll threads like the one about yung joc's r&b guest verses or w/e

J0rdan S., Friday, 19 February 2010 05:51 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah for me polls are maybe not a consistently effective conversation-starter but almost always work better than starting a new thread or reviving an old one with some "hay can we talk about this" ice-breaking

when yr finished thumbing thru yr ilx veteran's manual u can get back to me on this

freebird manjunya (zvookster), Saturday, 20 February 2010 02:11 (fourteen years ago) link

seriously i'm not trying to pick on the newbie but i'm trying to get your frame of reference here, are we talking about the 2 months or whatever that you've been posting or what?

some dude, Saturday, 20 February 2010 02:17 (fourteen years ago) link

obviously. more like month and a half, and more like based on less than that, like the last ten polls or so i read, most of which were on the page when i posted, one was the we are the world thing that there was already a lively thread about, another was enlivened by lex fearlessly throwing down youtubes excluded from the RA decade trax, which would prob be a carcrash if everyone did it, and the rest were on the level of ppl saying oh hey we all listened to this record. which isn't worthless, it passes the time, and prob puts it in the head of ppl who may listen to it one day. but it's enough to offer an opinion that poll threads tend towards dull, esp. with my time here taken as a given, and with qualifiers indicating this built into the post itself, without fools acting like it's some kind of personal attack, or i'm getting uppity or some shit. maybe i just expect dudes who post to the same threads as me to be cool with whatever, idk. "seriously how long you been here" was a moronic response to a dude saying "as far as i've seen".

freebird manjunya (zvookster), Saturday, 20 February 2010 02:37 (fourteen years ago) link

idk what it says that the best poll threads i've been on recently have been the tori amos ones (tim f, surm, tipsy m and many others all on fire)

I bought this a year or so ago but it's still in my to-be-listened-to stack.

:D

the passantino of the christ (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 February 2010 10:21 (fourteen years ago) link

ok I listened

it's just one listen so I can't say anything super well-informed but I like the singles more than the non-singles (esp. "Caught Up"). On this poll I'd have voted for "Bad Girl" over "Throwback". I'm surprised the album is as laid-back as it is; from the singles I figured there would be more bangers. I'll need to listen again late at night next time.

aight aight aight chill. all i was saying was that even with the 'as far as i've seen' caveat i thought you were making a blanket statement that was neither correct nor worth even stating but w/e it's all good.

some dude, Saturday, 20 February 2010 12:04 (fourteen years ago) link

anyway the first time i really saw you post was on my "BedRock" poll thread, which was a CLASSIC, so i mainly defensively felt like you were hating on fun threads like that!

some dude, Saturday, 20 February 2010 12:13 (fourteen years ago) link

"Throwback" and "That's What It's Made For" charted. Did "singles" here mean singles in the physical sense?

Andy K, Saturday, 20 February 2010 13:31 (fourteen years ago) link

yes...there were 5 official singles (including "My Boo" from the deluxe version). half this album was widely heard outside the album in one sense or another anyway, "Confessions 1" in the "2" video, heard "Bad Girl" on the radio a lot, etc.

some dude, Saturday, 20 February 2010 14:04 (fourteen years ago) link

two years pass...

an unexpected thrill to hear "That's What It's Made For" on the adult R&B station this a.m.
