uncharted 2 is pretty good eh? finally got around to it and for some reason i was kinda cynical about it, as much as i had enjoyed the first one, but this is really great. they have made such a virtue of scripted events. the whole thing is so seamless and there have only been rare occasions when the gameplay has been less than totally engaging. i approve of this game.

Didn't know Bruce Willis had made it into this game!

srsly... at first I was all 'I bought a PS3 for this?!' but then I started walking through the snow and I was like 'justified!!'

cozen, Monday, 22 March 2010 21:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm near the end now (thought I'd play through on hard first) and I've been consistently blown away throughout not just by the set-pieces but by the platforming, the writing, the graphics and the actual performance of the engine... the frame rate is so consistent even when there's lots going on. naughty dog did a great job here

the platforming altho v.linear is just in perfect service of making you feel like a total badass who can get anywhere nevermind how difficult and it mixes it up enough with little realtime cutscenes of breaking scenery so it doesn't really get boring

surprised how charming the characters actually are too; I was apprehensive that the dialogue was going to be too quip-y and wiseass-y but - although everyone is kind of a smartass - it's not overly annoying. cute without being irritating

Admittedly, it's nowhere near as bad (and when it works is funny and exhilarating and action-movie-y), but I think "Cat and Mouse" is this game's jetski level. WAY too much instant death, and now that I'm at the segment where I'm supposed to destroy the tank, the fuckers with rocket launchers keep dropping them OFF THE GODDAMN ROOFS. INTO THE STREET. WHERE THE TANK IS.

Thinking of getting UDF2, because I really quite liked the first one. Is the sequel much of the same?

i played the first scene from part 1 about a year ago and it felt really clunky.. i was supposed to be shooting things from a boat but i just kept getting housed

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 15 July 2010 15:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I didn't start really loving UC1 until after Sully gets shot (not that Sully didn't own, but that's just where the game started kicking much ass).

UC2 is, as described elsewhere, unfuckwithable though. somewhat overrated but only because everyone who plays it has so much goddamn fun that they gloss over all the less-than-perfect stuff. the end boss can eat many dicks though.

TOM SHITTYBISSELL (jamescobo), Thursday, 15 July 2010 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link

So, so much better. In every possible way. I got the impression Naughty Dog had been playing a lot of Valve games, since a lot of the game's approach (pacing, setpieces, competent NPC companion) is straight from the Half-Life 2 school of design.

ya UC2 is amazing until it turns into world of warcraft at the end

you are missing out on the most awesome tutorial sequence in history

yes

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 21:44 (thirteen years ago) link

i play MGS games basically afraid to fuck up, with my butt-cheeks clenched together, waiting like 4 or 5 minutes to finally pounce then getting killed then waiting for SNAAAAAKE then going back. but this game encourages you to just be a kind of fearless badass. and if you do fuck up, you get put back on track IMMEDIATELY. i can't stress how awesome that is. i can't remember having ever seen a loading graphic other than at the very beginning of the game.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 19 October 2010 21:46 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah for sure

it is pure pleasure

played U2 and enjoyed it, so went back to the first game recently, and found it to be very repetitive and started getting v. bored - walk in area, shoot guys in head, walk on a bit, "he's over here", shoot guys in head, etc etc.

zappi, Tuesday, 19 October 2010 22:13 (thirteen years ago) link

i never indulged in this, played it a mates and wasn't impressed. didn't like the sneaking around stuff, didn't work for me.

F-Unit (Ste), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 08:57 (thirteen years ago) link

well then just play it at your own place!

george pimpton (s1ocki), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 13:29 (thirteen years ago) link

i've gotten to the meat of this game now and it's just ridiculously, ridiculously fun

i'm still terrible at throwing grenades but i'm terrible at throwing grenades in every game that has them; it's a mental block of some kind

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:12 (thirteen years ago) link

you should practice IRL

george pimpton (s1ocki), Friday, 22 October 2010 15:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Ha I tried to play this game over from the beginning at the next hardest setting and I got frustrated in the jungle battle where you first get grenades and all the soldiers are attacking.

playing the second one now, haven't played the first. think it's good fun and looks great.

should probably be playing it on harder rather than normal as it's a tad easy. otoh i am fairly inaccurate with my shooting, so maybe not.

tending tropics (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 3 May 2011 19:10 (twelve years ago) link

i feel kind of dumm for having gotten basically to the end of this game and then pussing out in the jungle scene where you're attacked by like EIGHT of those mega-hard beasts all at once. i had enough trouble just killing like two of them.

possibly i sucked so bad because i never, ever got good at "run and gun". never had to use it. i suspect this is the one place where it's mandatory. anyway i don't think i'm ever going back since i peeked at a walkthrough and it looks like there's maybe 5 minutes of story left after that.

this game is siiiiick. i'm about 3/4ths of the way through. so fun! the part with the tank drove me nuts, though.

playing this i keep thinking, "i wish this is what the last indiana jones movie had been like"

can i just say i started 3 last night and i'm a bit underwhelmed - after the fuckin awesome train crash opening of part 2, starting the game with a generic pub brawl is pretty lame. and then the billionth sewer level i've ever seen. this better get better. and seriously eff every reviewer who failed to mention this, god, video game reviewers are such fucking hacks

the honest guys (tom chick @ honest gamers, eurogamer) kinda all panned this. ign loved it, tho!

oh yeah, av club also panned it

have to say, it don't look good imho

Summer Slam! (Ste), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:16 (twelve years ago) link

well av club gave it a C, not really a pan but probably more negative than expected

i still want it

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

a C for an AAA title like this is effectively a pan imho.

Mordy, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

I went on the recommendation of wired, which usually seems to be more honest, and totally loving 2

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

av club complained about the controls mainly, saying they weren't improved from uncharted 2. the controls in 2 weren't as good as they could have been but they didn't impede my enjoyment of the game, so i'm not worried.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

ya same here, though i dont LOVE em

the jazz zinger (s1ocki), Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:35 (twelve years ago) link

i heard the story is kinda shitty this time around and that it's less a problem of controls and more a problem of agency. a lot of the game is like watching a movie.

Mordy, Wednesday, 2 November 2011 18:37 (twelve years ago) link

then again, if you've already played one and two and enjoyed them you'll probably enjoy three too.
