Never bought a BOC record yet... and that cover/title is still a buzz-kill.

Jeez, self-parody ahoy!

The Strokes get dissed for this kind of thing but BOC are on Warp...

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:26 (eighteen years ago) link

dude, an email announcement hardly constitutes viral marketing!!

xpost

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:28 (eighteen years ago) link

it's only viral marketing if mark p is working for warp or its publicist (cuz he started the thread) or if he found out about the new album when a hot girl at a bar mentioned it!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:33 (eighteen years ago) link

slocki i am sick of you and your mythical hot idm girls!

It's what people DO WITH the email that makes it Viral Marketing:

Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that seek to exploit pre-existing social networks to produce exponential increases in brand awareness, through viral processes similar to the spread of an epidemic. It is word-of-mouth delivered and enhanced online; it harnesses the network effect of the Internet and can be very useful in reaching a large number of people rapidly.

Viral marketing is sometimes used to describe some sorts of Internet-based stealth marketing campaigns, including the use of web logs, seemingly amateur web sites, and other forms of astroturfing to create word of mouth for a new product or service.

Five years ago before blogs and ILM, Warp would have issued press releases that would have be picked up by convential media.

Warp decided to use the email network to break this news yesterday NOT press releases via a PR firm or a news story on their website, because they knew that Viral Marketing via an email message would create an internet BUZZ. i.e Connecting direct to the fans via email.

FACT: Blogs/ Rate Your Music/ ILM etc all responded FASTER than any conventional/ commercial media outlet on the web yesterday ! This was text book Viral Marketing in action ! RANT OVER

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:47 (eighteen years ago) link

ok martian i guess i'll tell everyone in the advertising industry they're using the term wrong!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:50 (eighteen years ago) link

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:53 (eighteen years ago) link

(xpost) Make sure you include a seventeen page list that enumerates the reasons why they're wrong and sign it "Precious Hugs 4EVA, DJ Martian (XOXOXO)".

phil-two that is not viral marketing, that's being an ironic laggard in marketing adoption terms. Whose next for marketing theory & practice lessons ?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 11 August 2005 15:35 (eighteen years ago) link

why do people not like Geogaddi? I have that and Music has the Right...they both seem pretty good. I don't really *know* anything about electronica or IDM or whatever, so maybe I'm missing something.....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 11 August 2005 18:18 (eighteen years ago) link

That thing you're missing is called "snobbery".

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 August 2005 18:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I like Geogaddi more than MHTR. My only real problem with BoC in general is that their beats could use a bit more variety at times.

sleep (sleep), Thursday, 11 August 2005 18:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I too think Geogaddi is better.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 11 August 2005 19:01 (eighteen years ago) link

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 11 August 2005 20:58 (eighteen years ago) link

oh canada, our home and native land.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 11 August 2005 21:16 (eighteen years ago) link

advance word from the listening party:

-it's a little under an hour long
-for the most part, it's short-long-short-long as is the usual
-many of the long tracks are based around guitar
-the most immediate of the tracks uses a bass like the one in roygbiv but in a much more powerful way
-it's boc, minus the sinister, plus a lot more head-nodding
-one track uses a straightforward drum kit, another a 4/4 tambourine line
-the synths sounded much more digital, less analog/destroyed, while the beatz were much more natural

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 11 August 2005 22:19 (eighteen years ago) link

The listening party was fun, if not subdued......
the record was played twice and it was for sure dope as shit!
It is WAY more hip hop with thunderous low end bass synths on every kick and there is a lot of scrabbly acoustic guitar like the Bibio Fi record, thus perhaps the campfire reference.... The songs have silence in between, meaning they are not all collaged together and it is kind of short......
So imagine the sounds from Andre 3000, the beats from Twoism and the lush crackle of the acoustic guitar and backwards flutes and all that jazz and you are close!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 11 August 2005 22:29 (eighteen years ago) link

it's boc, minus the sinister

Oh good!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 11 August 2005 22:36 (eighteen years ago) link

It sounds great, and I'm not even a BoC fan. How would you rank it with their other releases?

I really want this to leak.

Christian, Thursday, 11 August 2005 22:38 (eighteen years ago) link

it's boc, minus the sinister

BOO

Hopefully the next album will be red again.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 11 August 2005 22:38 (eighteen years ago) link

in my soulseek wishlist, this morning:

my folk song recorded by a campfire in the wood which boards of canada may well have never been to but the key factor is that a) there was an acoustic guitar and b) there was a campfire.mp3
