Oh, and the Daft Punk remix is really just more of a good thing.

This is a place to let out frustration and ??s about boring things getting their cocks sucked so fucking constantly and hard elsewhere.

Yeah, we don't really think they're boring. We must love them because we talk about them a lot! wtf

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:31 (nineteen years ago) link

okay then: if you wanted to get the same sort of "vibe" (for lack of a better word) that FF provides, what would you listen too? Only current bands please, because all the old, similar sounding bands have been absorbed to saturation point.

I would rather listen to "Take Me Out" than "To Hell With Poverty" right now.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't find them that boring at all. They're fun for long drives or late night drinking/posting sessions and a soulseek copy of the self-titled kept me warm through the winter. Unlike many "it" bands, FF seem to have an actual sense of humor in their music, which makes their whole arty/fashionable come-ons easier to swallow.

Ned already mentioned their affinity for Sparks, but I'm also glad they keep talking about ABBA in their interviews. A lot of their album tracks remind me of the overwrought decadence and sensuality in "Lay all your love on me" or "Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight)." To my ears, they seem to pay homage to that sort of music without sounding like they're trying too hard to pull it off (except perhaps the opening track).

I suppose the reverse argument could be made, that instead of giving a hint of subtlety and intellect their music simply feigns sophistication in order to lure the hordes of pretentious college students who refuse to shake their asses to the plainer plebeian stylings of Lil' Jon. Well, so be it. Like my ass gives a damn.

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I would submit that they might provide the opportunity (say a more fey and gay and englishy) way to shake your ass than Lil Jon...I'd bet lots of college students would shake their asses to both LIl Jon and FF (I bet if you go to college bars now you'd probably see than in the same nite!)....

....there is more than one way to shake an ass.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I hear that Franz Ferdinand are "15 pounds of fuck puppy in a 10 pound bag." Who knew?

....there is more than one way to shake an ass.

Well yeah, but then you still have plenty of people who prefer one over the other. And neither group are wrong. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, I go to college bars and I've heard all about Lil Jon's sweaty balls, but to my knowledge the Franz haven't yet managed to penetrate the watering holes of Athens, Ohio. Maybe by the time I get back that will have changed. Tragically, we're still in the eye of the hurricane that is the 80s revival, and it's going to be a long hard battle to get anyone to admit that ABBA is as fun to dance to as one of those sophisticated 80s new wave acts like say, Madonna or Cyndi Lauper.

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:27 (nineteen years ago) link

In a dank and dreary cavern somewhere deep below the earth, the ILXor mainframe has registered your astonishing lapse in remembering the scripture of St. Jon. It finds your lack of faith disturbing.

I can not answer this question as Franz Ferdinand do not provide me with a vibe! I don't think they're Satan, they just don't move my ass.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 20 August 2004 05:06 (nineteen years ago) link

(It's good to know that my trend for latching onto bands and musical genres that elicit such an, um, unpopular response from Serious Music People hasn't been broken. Though I would for once like to know that when I'm in the midst of crazy fandom over a particular musical artist that a great many Serious Music People love them too.)

(*sighs* No, Duran don't count, because I've viewed them as Big Sellouts since 2001.)

(*sighs again*)

(p.s.: I fucking HATE The Strokes, so don't give me any bullshit about how much Franz Ferdinand sound like them, because if FF sounded anything like The Strokes, I would fucking hate FF too. But I don't. I adore FF. So fucking THERE.)

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Friday, 20 August 2004 06:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Scissor Sisters version of "Take Me Out" is enjoyable.

I wasn't referring to Franz themselves as "zzzzzzzzzzz", but to my observation (which could well prove inaccurate to more seasoned ILM players) that many Franz conversations repeat themselves more than any other contemporary band.

Thea (Thea), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:49 (nineteen years ago) link

so Roxy forget vibe. you can't think of another band that does what FF does? One that sounds anything like them, but better?

oops (Oops), Friday, 20 August 2004 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Define "anything like them"! It's like a music nerd riddle or soemthing. "Find a band that sounds like an older band, but it has to be a modern band, and they have to sound like something you don't like, only you like them."

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 20 August 2004 21:42 (nineteen years ago) link

No I didn't say anything about them sounding like an older band.
Surely you have heard or read people describing how FF sound and what they like about them, right? Well are there any bands you think can also be described in a similar way but that aren't boring and don't totally suck?

I think you know what I'm getting at. I don't really care for them much either, but I don't know of another band that one could listen to in order to get the same thing that they provide. You may find it boring (and I may too), but obviously many, many people get something out of them.

oops (Oops), Friday, 20 August 2004 22:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not sure what you're driving at. I guess you're trying to say they're unique. When I first heard them I just thought it sounded like another Hot Hot Heat/Strokes/Cover of NME Awesome New Band You Should Like. Should I give them another listen? I don't doubt that people "get something out of them," but for me it was a major gag reflex from having the next big four skinny white dudes playing retro rock in suits simultaneously shoved down my throat and adored for the last 4 years.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 21 August 2004 16:50 (nineteen years ago) link

I really don't understand how anybody could rate this band above terminally mediocre. I challenge anybody to listen to the album and still be enjoying it by around the half-way mark.

And I don't think the fact that there's no other bands around currently that sound like them who don't suck even more justifies their existence.

I mean c'mon, what's next, The Hives FFS?

wombatX (wombatX), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:19 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah why not?

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:22 (nineteen years ago) link

there are two arguments against ff - the tom ewing one which i do see somewhat (although the way they fill the floor somewhat negates it), and the other corny indie fuxx one i'm surprised anyone here's old or dum enough to be preaching (though god knows it dominates this thread).

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:24 (nineteen years ago) link

I like the Hives album even more than this one. It's all about reminding me of Paul Revere & The Raiders.

I guess you're trying to say they're unique. When I first heard them I just thought it sounded like another Hot Hot Heat/Strokes/Cover of NME Awesome New Band You Should Like.

Actually I was asking you if they were unique or if there are other similar yet better bands (i feel like i've said that about 4 times now).
Okay so you've said who they sound like. I'm guessing you don't see the appeal of those bands either? Maybe they're catchy/poppy enough to attract a wide audience yet also have enough perceived coolness/edginess (relatively speaking. relative to say, Jessica Simpson) for those who normally don't like pop to not be ashamed to admit to liking them? I dunno.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 22 August 2004 05:12 (nineteen years ago) link

(You know, it's times like these that make me want to stop trying to look for "new music" to like and just retreat back into the '80s-revering cave I once shut myself up in. Because it's taken me a lot of effort to try to be as passionate about "new music" as I've been about all the music I'd considered musical comfort food, and if what I'm choosing to listen to is not considered quality listening by those who have a decidedly larger interest in "new music", I'm going to be more reluctant to try other bits of "new music" out, because I'm going to figure I'm never going to stop going down this "wrong path", and so why try out anything if what I'm going to be enthusiastic about is "crap"?)

xpost way up

Is it shocking to anyone that the people making the "corny indie fuxx" argument against NME's pet bands are being exactly the sorts of clannish, snobby asshats that they're railing against?

You've got the "katie" franz ferdinand email hotkeyed and just waiting to be the piece de resistance of the latest and greatest Frinterpol Strokillers debate. You don't let mainstream radio OR Spin/NME decide what you like (and Magnet's for fags). Big fucking deal. You couldn't fit the indie stereotype more unless you died twenty years ago and pitchfork was reviewing reissues of your first record.

'Is it shocking to anyone that the people making the "corny indie fuxx" argument against NME's pet bands are being exactly the sorts of clannish, snobby asshats that they're railing against?'

hasn't that always been obvious? indie fuxx make fun of indie fuxx, fanboys make fun of fanboys (ahem), religious nuts make fun of other religious nuts...and so on.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 22 August 2004 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

right, exactly, this is what momus was talking about on one of the vice threads: the narcissism of small differences. Yes, it's always obvious, but it seems somewhat self-defeating to be an asshole while complaining about assholes. If jon or whoever were like fucking Mother Teresa and started threads about baking cookies for ilxors and sending them in the mail with cards that had kittens on them, at least their bitching about indie assholes would be valid.

I'm glad I found ilx and I love the sense of community, 99% of the time you get insightful and/or hilarious posts, but sometimes the posturing is a bit much.

Uh, sure. If you want to call that lukewarm, tepid, "Eh, they're sorta okay-ish" or "I like two or three songs of theirs" or "They're, like, really, really, really simple, but I like them anyway" sort of "liking" that.

Really, Franz Ferdinand will probably be passionately extolled in some futuristic version of ILX eleven years down the line, when I'll be onto another group people will think is horribly derivative or overly simple or something. It'll be destiny.
