I've shot a big stuffed animal with a shotgun from 50 yards away and man did that thing fly.

i think milo's point was that the silliness of people putting a lot of work into developing a realistic engine, and making it a selling point of the game, all for the ultimate goal of making people fly backwards when they get shot.

the MP lobby... is the game world

"Seriously, who'd have thought that something as dry as a game lobby could be exciting? Leave it to Rockstar to prove us all wrong. The Grand Theft Auto developer recently unveiled the oft rumoured but never confirmed, multiplayer portion of its next open-world saga, Red Dead Redemption -- and the lobby might be the game's most exciting element. Why? Because it's practically a Wild West MMORPG.

The lobby is a fully playable version of the entire game world that's populated with both random CPU characters and live gamers -- though the numbers will never approach World of Warcraft levels. In our visit, we created a "posse" with friends and roamed freely about the map, engaging in activities from hunting wild animals to hunting other gamers. There are even ad hoc missions (like besieging a desert ranch filled with bandits) that feel a lot like raids. Whether running from the sheriff or shooting wildlife in the desert, everything we do can net us experience points which are used to customize our appearance and upgrade our horse, weapons, and "title". There are also new multiplayer modes to unlock like the standard 16-player deathmatch and a team-based "capture the bag" (both of which start with a spectacular face-to-face quick-draw duel). But. to be honest, we didn't spend a lot of time with those other modes, because we couldn't pry ourselves away from the lobby!"

Picture 1: Two players on a horse-drawn carriage. "The lobby is like a limit-free version of GTA IV's free roam mode set against a brilliantly atmospheric Wild West backdrop."

Picture 2: Player as Sheriff, points gun at camera; another player waits to shot him in the back. "Once we joined a party-- er, "posse" -- we were in constant communication with teammates."

Picture 3: 3 on 5 Gunfight near the wreckage of an abandoned church in the desert. "Anyone can travel to any point on the map (including building interiors), regardless of the location of lobby visitors."

The good thing about this coming out in late May is I don't know of a single other game that is coming out till September or maybe October that I have any interest in, so if it lives up to the videos, I should have plenty of time to get the most out of it.

"go on a gentle hunt together"

If your group is anything like the guys I used to game with, that'll last about 30 seconds into the first dispute re:loot. Then it'll turn into Reservoir Dogs, Wild West style.

** Each NPC follows their own routine and way of a life. For example,
one spend all day working in a blacksmith, then at closing time head
off to the saloon for a couple drinks before going home.
*** NPCs will converse with each other
**** You can converse with NPCs yourself
** NPCs can hold grudges. A man you beat up in the saloon may come back later with a gun.
** NPC houses can be broken into and robbed
*** NPCs store possessions in boxes and trunks in their houses.
** NPC towns can be wiped out and made into ghost towns
*** Ghost towns will revive in 2-3 in-game days
** In the wilderness rarely a minute passes without seeing some indication of an NPC
*** NPCs play an important part of free roaming, through random encounters
**** NPCs can be found doing a large assortment of things, from
ambushes to gunfights to hostage scenarios to simple things like
sitting around a campfire telling stories of Marston's earlier exploits
* Bank Robbing
** Initiated by having a gun drawn in a bank
* Dueling
** Can't duel everybody (like old women), but you can duel other gunslingers

I'm getting kinda GTAIV pre-hype flashbacks here. I remember reading one article which said hey, in multiplayer, if you like, you and a buddy can just go for a drive and listen to the stereo and have a chat. Somehow that sounded amazing to me, but did I ever do it in game? Well course not, cos it would've felt ridiculous.

"Gentle hunt" is having a similar effect, it just sounds great to me at the moment. But will I ever do it? Hmm.

JimD, Friday, 9 April 2010 20:53 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought the same thing, but a ramble around a huge peaceful landscape with discernable goals that impact your MP profile is different than driving around the same streets you're already sick of from the campaign, doing nothing

antexit, Friday, 9 April 2010 22:40 (fourteen years ago) link

I am pretty sure I will be a lone wolf in the multiplayer lobby, not a roam-in-packs guy.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Saturday, 10 April 2010 00:02 (fourteen years ago) link

you and a buddy can just go for a drive and listen to the stereo and have a chat

you can't do this in gta4 iirc. the stereo part that is.

this looks to be a more zen like experience, to truly roam at last

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 10 April 2010 00:15 (fourteen years ago) link

And even if it took a bit of work to (literally) bring it up to speed, expand the map a bit, add some more connective tissue to the sequel/prequel, bump it to 60fps, etc., at least they could justify $50. But hell, they haven't even unlocked RDR2 to 60 fps. This is such low effort it's almost trolling.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 August 2023 17:01 (eight months ago) link

Sounds like this port is perfectly fine, but as expected absolutely nothing more than that, a totally bare minimum effort, which is a bummer. Had they spiffed it up a bit I would have happily bought it at full price; I loved the second game and I've never played this one. But for $50, when a modern technological masterpiece like RDR2 can be purchased for $20, or The Last of Us Part 1 justifies its high price by offering a completely (re) polished current gen version? Sigh.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 17 August 2023 16:22 (eight months ago) link

Really disappointed this wasn’t ported to PC, where at least modders could have brought it up to snuff and added new content.

blatherskite, Thursday, 17 August 2023 17:47 (eight months ago) link

one month passes...

Apparently they added 60fps and 4k to the PS5 version of Red Dead 1. Why didn't they have that shit ready at release just a few weeks ago?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 12:11 (six months ago) link

wow crack that whip bossman. maybe because they were already worked to the bone under an unrealistic deadline???

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 13:16 (six months ago) link

guessing they prob did have it ready they just wanted to make sure the base version was running good before pushing it

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 13:32 (six months ago) link

so selfish!!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 13:45 (six months ago) link

This is the bare-bones 2013 port we're talking about, which was all but surprise-dropped for Switch and PS4, priced at a shocking premium. If it was that close to being ready they should have just waited a month, it's not like it was part of some coordinated million dollar multi-month marketing campaign.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 13:49 (six months ago) link

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 13:52 (six months ago) link

That makes sense, I guess. Anyway, upgraded performance is certainly a greater incentive to get the game than it was before, though it's still way overpriced.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 13:57 (six months ago) link

releases would go smoother if that was the general approach, turning on advanced tech on incrementally and then optimizing between steps, but they dont do that because it would be bad from a marketing perspective if they had to be all just wait a few months and the game will be better, of course they do often have to do that anyway when they ship broken shit

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 14:02 (six months ago) link

I honestly have no idea how much work it takes or doesn't take to unlock/increase the frame rate of a 13-year old game. Granted, this port wasn't even released for the PS5, just for the PS4 and Switch, so I guess a modest and slightly belated PS5-only upgrade by way of the PS4 version is an OK perk.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 14:09 (six months ago) link

i think compared to most video game dev things is not that much work but running that stuff on your console is very resource intensive so theyd want to make sure they have it dialed

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 14:14 (six months ago) link

Saw someone say (think it was digital foudnry) the ps4 port seemed to be an afterthought for a switch original release based on performance. Makes sense of the timeline (and the fact that the ps4 was literally exactly the same as the switch at launch despite its ability to do higher resolution/other things with minimal technical work).

xp Tracer, I can see why you and gyac are friends
