and, for the record i think yelawolf is a more exciting rapper in some ways than stalin, but i think the best of stalin's stuff has a great atmosphere and the sorta menacing tangerine dream thing is way more distinctive production than anything on yelawolf

anyway I'm pretty sure Joe Budden keeps Headline News on 24/7 in hopes of being the first guy to have a punchline about Conan losing the Tonight Show or whatever

the only rapper who has made any kind of sea-change rap style in the past couple years is gucci imo, its not like im only into rappers who make a huge impact or something tho. but i do tend to be drawn to rappers w/ a stronger personality & KRIT excepted, i think stalin/jacka have really strong personalities, even if they arent a 'way forward' -- or more accurately id argue that for 99% of rappers, including a bunch of my favorites past & present, personality IS the 'way forward' even if not all of them will have the impact of like eazy e / too short / biggie / pac / whoever else that had a huge stylistic impact

KRIT is an exception bcuz hes not really all that well defined yet & i could easily see him slipping into some annoying BOB/Lupe mode (i liked early Lupe tracks a lot I think i did a mediocre blog post about them once) but at this point he still feels like he has a lot of promise. freddie gibbs who again i do enjoy a whole bunch on some tracks esp 'murder on my mind' still feels like a really dry personality in a way that even KRIT doesnt (or KRIT is all over the place).

But Jacka and Stalin push a really strong personality through their raps? Like I hear a single line from Stalin & I can project this entire persona on him, cocky, sorta arrogant, but honest, charismatic center of attention type dude. I never get that from a single line of Pill's or Gibbs'.

im at my friends place on his laptop so i didnt get a chance to reread & rearrange that post so my thoughts are kind of out of order but im at least articulating something understandable??

jacka's personality is a lil more subtle w/ his fusion of cormega style ny delivery & west coast g rap archetype & east coast ny mafioso themes. i think its an impressive skill how hes somehow become the central focal point of his scene. i would say his style is conservative/reserved/subtle but that doesnt make it any less defined than a mystikal/luda extrovert

tbh i recommend googling around & finding jacka's "shooterz" mixtape cuz it gives a broader idea of his persona i think, than a few isolated youtubes

i think i need to have a clearer understanding of what you mean by 'sea-change' because the first person who comes to mind that's really altered the landscape and sound of hip hop for both new and old cats over the past few years is Wayne.

wayne did before him. his style changes were happening in like '05 - '06

so you'd argue that gucci's sound/style/flow/approach has drastically affected the landscape? Can you give some solid, national examples of new and old rappers embracing it for sales/artistic sake? Cause there's not much on, say, even Shine Blockas for instance that feels like it's a song with his imperative guiding it.

shine blockas is a horrible example dude. thats a boring gucci cameo & nothing like 99% of his work & is generally overrated

i shd note though that usually you have 'point of impact' which is followed by 'artists influenced' & that just cuz jay-z was changing the game in the late 90s it wasnt til the mid 00s that wayne starting running with that, it didnt mean that listeners didnt notice jay was changing the game while it was happening (although he def wasnt getting that respect from 99% of the corners he does now)

xp um, okay. just seems like most of gucci's best known national songs (and they're pretty much all cameos) like LOL:), Shine, Break Up, Get It don't sound like 99% of his work and his one breakthrough hit hardly sounded purely unique to him either.

i think Gucci has a certain influence on a lot of latter trap and/or swag rap, but a lot of times his influence is harder to distinguish from the more dominant (or at least more easily recognizable) influences of Jeezy in the fomer case and Soulja Boy in the latter case. "sea-change" is of course a pretty strong overstatement, but it's deej, what're you gonna do.

well gucci has the force of personality thing (like how the few differently perfect "gucci" enunciations sum this up) as well as the crazy wordplay and like pushing a few themes further and further out there.

but beyond that honestly i'm not sure how much of the newness deej hears in things is "objective". seems like he fiends for something that he recognizes as innovation and then he meditates on that, which is obv. cool with me because it generates really good ideas, deepens understanding, and just plain points out interesting stuff in the music.

well i think to a huge degree the notion of 'innovation' is a fiction anyway. but as ive pointed out too many times before to have to keep repeating, the nature of his rapping is whats pretty groundbreaking imo, the way hes created a style that allows him to release as many songs as he has while keeping them all lyrically fresh -- that he could release what would have been a career's worth of music in the 90s in a single year in 2009, and have it all be really consistent & listenable, by picking a pretty narrow set of themes & coming up w/ tons of variations (taking sides: high like a) giraffe pussy b) an owl c) eagle on california reefer d) do you see the trees? e) like a skyscraper etc etc etc on to infinity), is pretty amazing. i mean, compare to projects like freeway's month of madness where each track is diminishing returns from the one before ... his way w/ a hook & his persona & humor make this 'work' & maybe im not articulating this well enough but i think theres absolutely something here that isnt being done before. And sounds extremely diff from lil wayne's market invasion -- i mean, hes created a hundred individually different songs in a single year (more than that actually) -- not freestyles over existing beats, but hundreds of songs, and of course they're of varying quality but they mostly 'work'

are other rappers going to pick up on it? id say its likely it will have a lot of diff influences, but its not like the evolution of rapping styles behaves in an entirely predictable pattern. but hes still one of rap's biggest performers & will unavoidably have a huge influence so im not really sure how it could be anything less than a 'sea change' the same way it was for wayne, for jay-z, for juvenile, for pac, for too short, for tons of other rappers who've impacted the evolution of how-rappers-actually-rap

i mean everyone thought the bomb squad was 'groundbreaking' & then no producers really picked up on that style afterwords & instead it was the chronic's style that became the 'sea change.' im saying that from a rapping perspective if i was a gambling man id put my money on gucci being closer to the chronic than to nation of millions in terms of aesthetic influence
