In other Olde News, getting myself better acquainted with 5 years of Hyperdub, this is just killing me/has made me reconsider my ambivalence to a lot of Hyperdub stuff.

In semi related matters, why Digidesign seems to have topped all sorts of 2009 lists but Purple City not so much? And I think I might prefer "Stash" from the Hyperdub Comp to both of them.

Then again, I only recently found out I like Joker, so...

Kode9's Nine Samurai. have always wondered where the tune came from, figured it was classical russian dudes. today i found out (and it's blindingly obvious) - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047478/ (Kurosawa's Seven Samurai from 1954!, runs all the way through it in various guises)

i miss reading about this sort of stuff in magazines.

tho i think some of the design cd be a bit better. not that its bad, but the whole glossy thing doesnt really seem right to me for some reason. i liked how it looked when it was all just black and white and looked a bit fanziney. so on the next issue id like to see it look more like a lovingly stapled photocopy with weird drawings of skream and benga or something.

vex'd were on the breezeblock again last night previewing the new / old album (it only got half finished at the time, they've finished it off / padded it out with remixes). sounded great (although that may've been the old old tracks they included)

'live dubstep'

haven't seen a show yet and not sure how the concept works, do they really play those big basslines live or is it backing track stuff with a singer? Dunno how much of a novelty thing it is. Remember seeing some live dnb once that was great maybe could translate.

winter nights/early mornings are the ideal time for dubstep (even here in sunny south florida).

i've been in kind of a dubstep rut. darkstar -- to the extent it was dubstep at all (and i don't think it was) -- seemed undercooked to me. anything new and interesting out there?

Darkstar was okay, not something I'd want to hear all the time. I'm enjoying James Blake's stuff, the new Horsepower Productions, that thing Scientist did where he dubs up tracks by Pinch and Jack Sparrow.

It's two discs i think. One with the original tracks and the other with the dubs.

yeah I think the package comes with both sleeves... I know the 80s Scientist artwork is like uber-classic but the two above just make me feel nauseous. Album is OK, not brilliant

are earlier scientist discs "uber-classics"? i like some of his stuff, but never ever considered it on the level of, say, king tubby or scatch perry.

They are really good, yeah (agree they are not really game-changing though). And artwork is def. amazing.

Most of you already now this by now, but Scuba - Triangulation is seriously the bidness!

It's actually kind of ridiculous how amazingly well this album flows. It manages to listen like a masterfully well sequenced mix; this makes me all the more excited to see him play here in a week!

Can't wait to get this, even though I've heard the Quest tunes a billion times before and the last Silkie album underwhelmed me. These two together are straight fire.
