I have to ask -- who knew girls in high school that didn't drop passive aggressive insults towards other girls? it's part and parsel of the whole high school package. the phrase 'you belong with me' is so perfect because it admits the irrationality of it all: she's jealous, she throws insults behind his/her back, she scribbles in her diary 'mister, you belong with ME!'. it's true, it rings true, and it's beautiful even if it isn't necessarily right that she ends up with the guy and he may lead a giving relationship with the cheerleader.

swift haters relax, there are plenty more polls in the sea

do you want to be happier? (whatever), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:24 (fourteen years ago) link

looool i see i couldn't have affected the results in any way

a place to bury st edmunds (electricsound), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:24 (fourteen years ago) link

of course 'you belong with me' is the sister of 'baby just say yes'. It's her goddamn daydreaming, she'll have it her way. but when she actually gets the guy he's an asshole, or she's bored because he isn't an asshole. which rings just as true.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:25 (fourteen years ago) link

good list guys. i've given that taylor song a fair shake but it's kind of a snooze unless you dig some really specific things in music that i don't really care about and even then

But if you like 20 year olds who pretend they are 16 year olds who act like they're 13 year olds then that's cool for you. I simply don't get the appeal.

this is otm

otm, i mean lol @ boring rockist lyrics transfixion in the first place but lol more @ ppl so misanthropic and proud of themselves for being grey that they're categorically against songs written by teenagers that are ostensibly about...being a teenager

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:27 (fourteen years ago) link

also ILM needs to school itself in the ways of Desire's Don't Call.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:27 (fourteen years ago) link

i thought i voted for Jeremih AND tonetta and did not; they did both get album nods.
Joker and Vistoso Bosses SO CLOSE

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:28 (fourteen years ago) link

what i learned from this thread is that soft circle released something this year, damn hisham, learn to publicize

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:29 (fourteen years ago) link

also the "20 yr old acting like a 16 yr old" thing just isn't accurate - she's 20 now but the album was released in 2008 so she probably would have written these songs when she was 16-18.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:29 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm kinda surprised "birthday sex" didn't get close, i swear it was the r&b thread's consensus single of the year at one point

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:29 (fourteen years ago) link

a) A 20 year old who wrote a song when she was c. 18 about being c. 16 makes perfect sense to me. That's hardly

b) "if you like 20 year olds who pretend they are 16 year olds who act like they're 13 year olds then"... you like pop music.

Tim F, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:30 (fourteen years ago) link

ha ha xpost with Lex, and I meant to say "that's hardly self-infantilising IMO".

sade - soldier of love (6 votes, 81.5 points)
^^

I would have voted for this but it feels like a 2010 single. Unfortunately it won't achieve Rehab/The Fear ubiquity

danzig, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:31 (fourteen years ago) link

kind of astonished that you guys read the storyline in 'u belong' so very seriously; I bet you think Jay Z is selling crack too.
It's not about the theme! Her lyrics are well written, she's a great voice and she's totally present but the topics are crazy mundane and boring. I think the positives outweigh the negatives in net.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:31 (fourteen years ago) link

There is absolutely nothing self-aware about You Belong With Me.

xpost I'm not fixated with lyrics but if we are lauding her for being a great songwriter then the topic is up for grabs. Taylor's songs are the equivalent of court blotters, detailed and maybe they "capture" high school but there's no insight or depth to it.

musically, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:31 (fourteen years ago) link

also, YBWM is clearly taylor at her most...i guess self-consciously teenage and giddy; this is hardly a persona she maintains across all her songs, plenty of which are really wise-beyond-her-years and have, as jordan pointed out elsewhere, a real big-sisterly quality to them

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:32 (fourteen years ago) link

lex and Tim so otm about the ridiculous self-infantilising point, but even i'm not sure how i feel about her next single being called "today was a fairytale"

een, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:32 (fourteen years ago) link

I would have voted for this but it feels like a 2010 single. Unfortunately it won't achieve Rehab/The Fear ubiquity

i voted it - it was released in dec tho, right? anyway i think the sade contingent would be wise to focus their efforts on the 2010 albums poll

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:33 (fourteen years ago) link

i guess my thing is that her being a great songwriter is the only thing we can legit laud her for? her arrangements are bland and her voice is, um, functional at best. so yeah in order to enjoy her i would have to close-read all these songs.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:33 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm going to persevere with Taylor out of respect for democracy, but as of now I utterly don't get it - there's nothing there

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:33 (fourteen years ago) link

which is fine but uh it's not really my thing

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:33 (fourteen years ago) link

k3vin we don't say "rockist" when we have company over

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:34 (fourteen years ago) link

well to me songwriting =/= lyrics, but i think theyre plenty verisimilar and certainly don't get in the way for me

xps

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:34 (fourteen years ago) link

een: that's a simple and fairly weak song but also just a soundtrack single. next album's gonna be the test for her progression

abcfsk, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:34 (fourteen years ago) link

YBWM has mad amazing fills and stuff fwiw, especially the one-note bassline before the last chorus

een, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:34 (fourteen years ago) link

ok that's very reassuring i want to be able to sail on the taylor boat forever

een, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:34 (fourteen years ago) link

i still have huge stylistic barriers with any and all pop-country, but damn if the "i remember you/ driving to my house/ in the middle of the night" section isn't some intense shit

goole, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:35 (fourteen years ago) link

ok wait who was the other person who voted for Holy Ghost?

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:35 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah songwriting =/= lyrics but with taylor i'm really being given a limited amount of things to latch onto because i can't be like "well damn that is one fantastic contemporary country production!"

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:35 (fourteen years ago) link

for the record I am the most unabashed dumb popist here so don't drop the R-bomb on me.

I'm not going to argue about Taylor, mainly because I have only heard three of her songs in my life.

musically, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:36 (fourteen years ago) link

infantile lyrics /= bad songwriting. It's a character and she inhabits it reasonably and honestly. I would also like to see her branch out into more sympathetic territory but I'm amazed that she finds a way to so clearly speak to me about attitudes and views that I would otherwise find vapid if they weren't so damn genuine and articulate.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:36 (fourteen years ago) link

musically it took me A LOT of exposure to come around on Taylor, but I'll fight for her now. Fearless is a slow burner of an album.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:37 (fourteen years ago) link

"love story" is the most amazingly constructed song -- the last chorus is suuuch a rush

ratface killah (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:37 (fourteen years ago) link

lol who voted for single ladies?

plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 23:37 (fourteen years ago) link

in re YBWM i much prefer the "country pop" production on the album to the "rock" production on the mainstream-radio single. there's not much difference, but i like the little bit of banjo.
