sports illustrated's predictions are consistently off the money. how would the spurs beat the lakers or the hornets in a 7 game series?

jordan s (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 26 October 2008 02:49 (fifteen years ago) link

lol indeed.

Shacknasty (Frogman Henry), Sunday, 26 October 2008 02:57 (fifteen years ago) link

x-post there was no way you could know because i post about twice a month. spurs are more important than jesus and taquerias in san antonio, so i put on for mi ciudad...altho i think hoos is at least a spurs sympathizer

no illusions abt spurs this year, that SI dude who made the prediction was just like "well they do this all the time so lol whatevs". it's not really a rebuilding year cos they will make the playoffs and make a run at things, but basically, the next two years are gonna be waiting for hella cap space in '10, or possibly pulling the trigger on a trade if the right one comes up.

front office made a sort of half-assed run at magette but were never really in the running so long as someone was willing to go over mid-level (hi dere waryers!) ownership never wants to go in luxury tax mode, which considering the size of our market is wise, but it means needing to draft an all-star every 3-5 years or so to stay in championship contention, cos the free agent market is not the place for penny pinchers to get awesome fast.

a lot of the spurs overseas prospects have kind of dicked them over (they'd been trying to get luis scola over for at least 2 years but his spanish team kept upping the buyout price, which -- given the exchange rate -- made the spurs all like "fuck this" and they basically gave him to the rockets for a song.) this year some brazilian honkey was supposed to come over but he re-signed with HIS spanish team. fucking euros.

i srsly wonder, now that avery johnson is not coaching, how long pop is going to stay as coach. even tho he became a pariah in the mavs locker room, aj is still well loved here and it seems like he'd be a natural replacement when pop decides to step down. question is when does he decide to go? maybe this beard says "i am ernest hemingway and i am about to blow my branes out"

parker out

eman, Saturday, 8 November 2008 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link

i am half convinced now that the spurs should just throw the season a la 96-97 when a fading dominique wilkins was our leading scorer. they didn't rush david robinson or sean elliot back, and that shit worked out pretty well.

jumping the gun

Aimless, Sunday, 9 November 2008 18:55 (fifteen years ago) link

haha totally, parker is only out 2-4 weeks, manu back around new years, so most of the season is salvageable, but their chances of srsly contending seem dubious to me this year so i'd rather just call it a season 5 games into the year and continue the tradition of fucking up one season every 10 or so and making bank with a #1 pick is that so much to axe???

no pick better than 26, but still by my count they average out to picking a rotation player a year (even if the player is balling for someone else like dragic, scola, or salmons). particularly amazing are manu at 58 and scola at 57. best foreign scouts in the biz right?

symsymsym, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 09:18 (thirteen years ago) link

leandrinho barbos, is that barbosa?

steve kerr discussing pop's olympics in the athletic

Were you all at all fretting about the pressures that were building on him?

I wasn’t worried about him because he can handle all this stuff. He’s a grown man. I just wanted to win so badly for him and for (retiring USA Basketball managing director) Jerry Colangelo, given that for both of them, it’s a swan song from Team USA. And for Jerry to go out undefeated in the Olympics, took over the program in ’04 and won four Olympic golds, what an accomplishment for him.

And for Pop, this is, in many ways, the cherry on the top of the sundae for his coaching career. He’s obviously still going, but the Spurs, they’re not going to win a championship. Pop will be the first to tell you that. In many ways, this is sort of a fitting topping to his incredible career. To add a gold medal, just an amazing accomplishment.
