aw I like the godawful Kate Bush cover. But maybe only because I really really like the synth sound on the string hook bit. None of the few of their own songs I've heard have done much for me, though.

not sure how much staying power this will have but so far this really sounds like my album of the summer

Warmest Chord is a new British record label run by folks from Rough Trade and Make Mine. The label places a great deal of emphasis on design and packaging, and every release will come with a limited edition screenprint, as well as a digital mixtape created by the band whose music is on the release. The artist who designed the release’s screenprint will also revamp the label’s logo with every new release.

The first release on Warmest Chord is Evertide, a new EP from the recently BNM’ed lo-fi pop project Wild Nothing. Up above, you can download one of the three tracks from Evertide, which is available now in a ridiculously limited edition of 75 and also as a digital album. (You can stream another track on the label’s Bandcamp page.)

Franz Vesolt designed the two-in-one phosphorescent/glow-in-the-dark screenprint packaging, and every record will come numbered, labeled, and stamped. We’ve got the tracklist below.

Probably my fav band of the past 3 months of the year, I actually don't like some of the singing and some of the lyrics - but it works as a whole. Their albums so far have been really consistent.

The ep is marvellous - I played the LP a lot but it pales next to Golden Haze.

yeah i'm pretty much in agreement with the above. the album sounds great but most of it doesn't stick with me as much as the singles/EP

"Chinatown" is really amazing.

I really like them.

Saw them the other week - very weak performance, absolutely no enthusiasm (& yeah I realize the dream/shoegaze-esque formatting, but come on and tap your foot at the least). Love their last album's artwork tho, really one of my favorites from that year.

ha, well i was pretty conscious of the archetypal shoegazer provisions for a "concert" but these guys have just far too melodic working material to just stand around and insist "this is all about the music, man". i GET IT with mbv and such, but in their cases it really was both essential to their methods and allure, whereas these dudes i felt where just doing it because they knew their predecessors did. slowdive/ride/swirlies did plenty of rocking out on stage, and had as equally mellow songs.

Swirlies didn't go nuts when I saw them, but I was distracted by the amazing songs so my memory is fuzzy.

agreed. The EP is just fucking awesome. Love the LP too.

I saw them recently and really liked it, my only complaint was that several songs were cut in half! (stopped verses short of the end for some reason - every song was like 1:45 long, weird)

Right. The rest of the album isn't bad at all, but it's not as grab-you-by-the-collar as "To Know You".

I'll definitely still be checking it out, loved Nocturne and the EP that came after.

You could tell from the first four or five notes of Nocturne that this was an artist transitioning from cassette indie to full-on Record Collection Rock. This is a good thing, and both Nocturne and the EP-that-nobody-can-remember-the-name-of were really excellent for their depth of texture and references.

The problem, for me at least, is that the thing Tatum appears to have spent the least amount of time synthesizing is the very thing he needed more than all those Berlin-era Bowie references: how to be an engaging singer with good lyrics and varied, compelling vocal delivery.

Massive Carole King influence on this one. Also, he's managed to produce a cover tune of My Bloody Valentine covering Wire's "41ºN 91ºW" and also cover Foxygen's "How Can You Really?" one right after the other. More to follow.

I still have a lot of time for Nocturne and the Empty Estate EP. The last album had some great moments too, although was a bit uneven on the whole. I can't get into Gemini much.

When the mid 80s were over, I really missed the guitar sound in "Partners in Motion" (and in places on the Tornado Wallace album from last year) and I'm overjoyed it's finally okay to make a guitar sound like that again—because it wasn't for a very long time, unless you were recording elevator music.

really enjoying this so far. it feels like he took lessons from Life Of Pause (which i wasn't super into and he, from interviews, doesn't sound like he quite was either) and just applies those sophistipop tendencies to his usual soundscapey popcraft.

The new one is basically Nocturne II, but the songwriting isn't anywhere near as consistent in terms of quality and while the production on Nocturne helped his vocals to blend in with the music unobtrusively, here I can't take my mind off the fact that Tatum is a weak singer.

this one hasn't clicked with me yet, I ended up loving the last one after multiple listens though

it took a while but 'wheel of misfortune' grew into my fav from this one. that main riff is sublime

nice little EP out called "laughing gas"
