i guess i like the folkier / bluegrassier early stuff better
the latest LP sounded more Ben Folds-y iirc

Don't remember it too well to be honest. Sort of generic heartfelt acoustic stuff, I guess. I'm surprised it hasn't been more discussed around here though, as big as it's been on some year end lists. I thought there was a constituency for this sort of thing around here.

haven't heard avett before i and love and you - but have to say it really is quite good - seems like a lot of hipster backlash going on - really good songs, musicianship and vocals - wife and friends even think it's pretty striking - just listen and judge outside of the context --

i only know who this band is because their cd was in starbucks. this says more about me than them.

i reckon im part of the "hpister backlash"
i just dont get it
― lukevalentine, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 22:39 (fourteen years ago) link
haha hipster*
according to the san francisco chronicle (via wikipedia) the avetts sounds like the
"heavy sadness of Townes Van Zandt, the light pop concision of Buddy Holly, the tuneful jangle of the Beatles, the raw energy of the Ramones."
if the group actually sounded like that, it would be one of all time favorites
but it just sounds kinda maudlin "heartfelt" acoustic music for post-emo indie kids
some of the songs on "Emotionalism" were v. catchy but still somehow annoying

oops, someone beat me to it. but did people get this excited about ben folds five? i'm genuinely confused why i overhear old people talking about the avett brothers.

Went to see em in London last night. Great live performers, but there's some really ropey songwriting in there.

Not so much. There was no enthusiasm for 'em over in Rolling Country 2010.

I saw them at a festival this summer, and while I wouldn't go out of my way to see them again or listen to them on my own time, for that hour I liked them just fine. Really good singers and performers.

heard the i and love and you album in a record store a few weeks ago. thought it was pretty good for what it was. catchy tunes, energetic delivery and a distinctive sound. kinda surprised there aren't more defenders hereabouts. on the other hand, i didn't like their music enough to buy the record or even steal it from internet piracy sites which i have heard about. or, probably, ever listen to it again.

If only their seemingly perpetually regenerating follicles could make biomass diesel... .. .
While their last album was littered with throw-aways-a-plenty, I cannot argue anything that might question the integrity of these guys. If a listening of "Sixteen (16) in July" or "Pretend Love" or "When I Drink" doesn't abide their altruism, nothing can.
These guys deserve your witness; true Troubadours.
P.S. fuck those that compare "Avett's" with Mumford & Sons; ...don't know shit!
