Yes on both accounts. The foam buttons the cds click onto are a pain in the ass.

I received mine in the mail today. It fits in my record shelves - without the outer sleeve. So now the sleeve is laying on top of some old jeans in my closet.

Huge praise from Alex Ross in Salon today:
http://www.salon.com/books/awards/2007/12/13/book_week_picks/

But my record of the year came from outside the classical field. Radiohead are filed under rock, but to me they are collectively one of the most interesting composers in contemporary music. The secret weapon on "In Rainbows" is Phil Selway, drumming intricate, tricky, spiky patterns under the surface of what seems to be a lush, almost romantic album. Was there some story about the price? I forget: "Videotape" puts me in another world.

Where's my discbox? Come on w.a.s.t.e. - by boat, really? Knowing that the retail version would be nearly out before I finally received my discbox might've factored into my decision to buy this thing.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 17 December 2007 18:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I've ordered shoes off the net since i had the email saying my Discbox had left, which have arrived, and still no sign of my Discbox.

Kind of annoyed about the fact that tickets to their concerts aren't being sent out now too. In the confirmation email it says they won't be sent out till 2 weeks before the concert. I completly missed this, if it was stated on the page where you order them. Why not send them out now? I won't even be at this address two weeks before the concert. Waste of time for everyone involved.

micarl, Monday, 17 December 2007 18:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Why not send them out now?

In a word? Scalping.

dblcheeksneek, Monday, 17 December 2007 20:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, right, so they're just delaying the scalping? Great.

micarl, Monday, 17 December 2007 20:30 (sixteen years ago) link

You got a better solution? (I'm not being snarky, actually.)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 December 2007 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Sending them out late isn't a solution.

micarl, Monday, 17 December 2007 20:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Just an inconvenience.

micarl, Monday, 17 December 2007 20:57 (sixteen years ago) link

An inconvenient non-solution? Echoing Mr. Ned: what do you suggest?

Secondly, exactly how is it inconvenient for you? I'm thinking an intended x-mas present or a European holiday leading up to one of the shows, but I'm not sure how else.

dblcheeksneek, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 14:55 (sixteen years ago) link

I live in New Zealand, where I have the tickets being sent to a sold out Amsterdam concert.
From April I'll be traveling Europe and will be at no fixed address. I've paid for tickets which are going to be a mission to get a hold of! Where's the justice? I lose out because there's a possibility that people may be scalping tickets but I've already got tickets to a show that has had it's WASTE allocation sold out!

There is no real solution to scalping. That's all I'm saying. You do the best you can, like limiting tickets to 4. Punishing those who may be traveling far and wide to go to the concert is absurd.

micarl, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 18:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess my proposal would be to send out tickets to people who aren't from the UK earlier so they can ensure they get to go.

If people don't get off their chuff and buy a ticket and then get done over by scalpers, whose fault's that?

Scalpers would be semi-retarded to scalp these shows seeing as how many there are, the cost, the pain it is to log-on etc, etc.

micarl, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 18:43 (sixteen years ago) link

haha - I'm not finished. Judging by the time it's taking for the delivery of my discbox, sending them out that close to the concerts is going to cause lots of dramas with signiture requiring on delivery etc...You have been warned.

micarl, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 19:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I thought you might (be traveling and hence inconvenienced).

Assuming you haven't already, try contacting w.a.s.t.e. directly and 'splain your situation; you're likely not the only one in this situation. They might tell you that they were trying to protect the local populace from being overrun by out-of-towners, or that their hands are tied, or... they might accommodate a respectfully worded request for some special treatment.

dblcheeksneek, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 00:54 (sixteen years ago) link

(I make the suggestion b/c I've dealt with returns/exchanges with w.a.s.t.e. in the past and they've been helpful.)

dblcheeksneek, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 00:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Presumably you (coming from NZ person) could arrange with WASTE to pick up the tickets when you get there?
There would have been less hassle with the Discbox deliveries if it had been clear from the outset that it would be a courier and not royal mail, and that the thing would be so huge that it would require someone to be in to receive it.
just a thought

Pandaloo, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 10:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Pandaloo, where you at? I (in the States) didn't have to sign for mine; it was left at the door. Even more interestingly: the return address was stateside (some place in N.Y.); I bet they shipped a boatload/bulk at once and then sent them out individually, at least over here.

dblcheeksneek, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 14:20 (sixteen years ago) link

ah right i am UK.
maybe they sent them to a central depot in the USA and then sent them out from there. different firms delivering them in different countries i suppose

Pandaloo, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 14:34 (sixteen years ago) link

OK, audio question: has anyone else notice that between 2:20 and 2:30 of Weird Fishes/Arpeggi there's a muffling/fading in and out in the levels? I thought it was just an error in the original 160kbps/MP3s and/or intial mastering, but I'm hearing it again in the 320/LAME MP3s I ripped from the actual album...anyone else? (Definitely more detectable with the headphones on.)

dblcheeksneek, Thursday, 20 December 2007 21:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Although the lyrics remain cringe-worthy, the music of Down Is The New Up roxx. Lemme know if you stumble upon the instrumental...

very surprised that alex ross liked this album. i am a sucker for good drumming too but no drummer in the world can save these shitty ballads (even reckoner which may be the best song is totally annihilated after one and a half minutes by the string section).

You're surprised that Alex Ross likes something by Radiohead, Bjork, Justin Timberlake, or Missy Elliott?

finally adding my two cents after months of holding my tongue.

excellent record with a nice sort of homogenous feel to it that 'hail to the thief' was lacking. but i guess variety and experimentalism was part of the appeal of 'thief'. but anyway, while it doesn't appear that 'in rainbows' makes much new ground on the first few listens, there are intricacies and hidden nuances to these songs that only emerge with close, involved listens. RECKONER is a treat for the ears - appropriately restrained and slightly aloof, it took me a while to realise that the true centrepiece and shining element of this song are the beautiful vocals. by contrast, JIGSAW FALLING INTO PLACE defies restraint and launches into a stunningly climactic final minute that creeps up on you before you even realise its happening. importantly, the record is extremely well paced and sequenced and is seems to be the perfect length. the shorter numbers are fortunately very substantial, and in the context of the record act as fitting segueways to the more played-out numbers. this is the best since 'kid a'.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 14:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel about it. Well said.

Spot. On.

Until Monday night, my relationship with In Rainbows was limited to headphone and car speaker engagements. While auditioning some new gear for the home hi-fi, the album really began to reveal itself. From Selway's cymbal (i.e., ride) work at the end of "Reckoner" to the ebb and flow outro of "Videotape", there's so much more to be heard if one's willing to listen. No, I mean, really listen.

dblcheeksneek, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 14:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Spot on again. Also, the difference between the original mp3s and the CD is quite noticable the more you listen to it. Particularly on Nude.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 14:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Gotta hand it to Radiohead, no? Preemptively leak low-quality MP3s of their latest and greatest to tease their mostly audio-aware fanbase (and others) into buying its higher fidelity release? Brilliant!

Although, as I've said once before upthread, is there not something audibly fishy betwixt 2:20 and 2:30 of "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi"?

dblcheeksneek, Wednesday, 9 January 2008 15:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Radiohead zooms to No. 1 this week on The Billboard 200 with "In Rainbows" (TBD/ATO), a week after a premature debut at No. 156 due to street date violations. The set sold 122,000 units in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, a dramatic downturn from 2003's "Hail to the Thief," which started at No. 3 with a career-best 300,000.

However, the comparison is somewhat unfair, as "In Rainbows" was available for several weeks in the fall as a "name your own price" download exclusively from Radiohead.com, and sales figures for that experiment have not been released.
