Oh great, now my friend's cousin is posting anti-immigration "funnies" on my "Fun Wall". I think I may have to remove that application, unless I can block certain people from posting on it...

Friend's cousins on your friends list??

Alba, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 13:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I know, I know. His dad friended me as well. I do know them all, have been out drinking with them etc. Seemed rude not to.

I wish celebs were on Facebook, putting gossip bloggers out of business...

http://www.pixelbuddy.com/images/broken_heart.gif Jake Gyllenhaal is no longer in a relationship.

Will M., Monday, 12 November 2007 17:25 (sixteen years ago) link

aww imagine the broken heart was where it belonged there

I have now rejected one individual's friend request three times. I almost feel bad but there's a reason I haven't spoken to him for 7 years. He was a cockfarmer then and by all accounts, having seen his uber-twattish professionally taken pictures (in many of which he is shirtless) on someone else's account, he is still a cockfarmer now. and he has a terrible terrible tache too.

my brothers aren't interested in f-book thank heavens. although they are not yet 18 so maybe there is time yet.

GET THEM ON ILX.

Matt DC, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:11 (sixteen years ago) link

one of them is a long-time lurker, but if he joins it will be as an ILM-specific thing. he is a lot more mature and discreet than me in many ways. he is very experienced with internet dialogue and will fit in seamlessly, only posting about things he is an expert on. the other one will not join ilx. i can say that with confidence.

if the first brother joins ilx, i will not draw any attention to him, and you will not be able to tell who he is.

ok, wtf, my mom is on facebook now. how did i find out? she's friends w my aunt. argh!

stevienixed, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 02:54 (sixteen years ago) link

I remember a Steven King interview where he talked about how he doesn't really know how his books are going to end, he justs starts with an IDEA, and then just lets that IDEA take him where it will.

WHOA I tried that and it's like throwing armpit hair into a bottomless tunnel, ie pointless.

You need different hair.

Your favorite musicians and businesses are here.

Your favorite bands, businesses, and products are coming to Facebook. Check out Dave Matthews Band, become a fan of (RED), or search for your favorite brands. You can also find out about what your friends like through the new "Fan of..." box on their profiles.

This was my first Thanksgiving away from home, and after a phone call with most of the extended family gathering, I ended up facebook friending my aunt and both her kids to see the pictures they posted the next day. Crazy!

haha my brother-in-law's uncle is a weird dude to begin with but now i'm seeing strange comments from him on my sister's facebook page. it's freaking me out that he's going to find me next! alsdkgj!

tehresa, Saturday, 24 November 2007 20:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Apparently your activity on other websites may soon show up on Facebook's news feed. I was forwarded an e-mail from my girlfriend's co-worker that said that after he bought something on Amazon, a comment about the purchase then appeared on Facebook, even though he uses a different e-mail address for each site. MoveOn.org is starting a petition against this blatant privacy violation, and they've created a Facebook group as well.

More from the NYTimes.

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah this is part of the new advertising model cooked up to attempt to justify Facebook's ridiculous overvaluation (see also becoming a 'fan' of things). *Apparently* you can opt out of this somewhere but I'm going to be keeping an eye on my newsfeed whenever I buy something.

There is a huge potential backlash here.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I went to my privacy settings to see if I could turn this off, and it said that no websites had tried sending my data to Facebook yet, so there was nothing I could do, even preemptively.

jaymc, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 23:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I just saw this via kv_nol posting a comment on Facebook - how the fuck does this work anyway? How does Amazon etc know what yr Facebook account is? Via your cookies or something? This sounds pretty fucked up. Not that I've noticed anything on my news feed yet.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 16:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Amazon & FB both use email addresses as logins - I assume they're just feeding back for every email address that matches up on both sites.

onimo, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 16:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, as I said upthread, my girlfriend's co-worker uses different e-mails for Facebook and Amazon, so he was guessing IP address (although that doesn't seem like it would be very accurate if you share your computer with someone else).

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 16:22 (sixteen years ago) link

kenan, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 16:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Sorry jaymc, didn't notice you said they were different emails. As you say IP addresses are no good (I share one of my work IPs with a squillion others). Unless they're 100% sure about someone's identity (and even if they are!) this could lead to some very dodgy situations.

xpost thanks Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃 - if that's the case it can be prevented locally, though many wouldn't know how to do it

WHAT'S NEXT GUYS? WHERE TO?

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 16:39 (sixteen years ago) link

I like facebook, and lord knows I like scrabble, but lord also knows that if I get just one notification from facebook that says "Congratulations! We're going to tell all your friends that you heartily endorse the Hitachi Magic Wand!" I am so deleting my account and never looking back.

WHAT'S NEXT GUYS? WHERE TO?

kenan, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 16:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Kenan, don't go! I mean, fuck it, just ignore those notifications. I unselected most so I don't get'em in my email account. And you can go directly to Scrab, bypassing FB and stuff. :-)

My mum ignored my friend request. BITCH. ;-)

nathalie, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

nath, the point is not that I'm mildly itchy when I get too many notifications, it's... um... where to begin?

kenan, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 17:04 (sixteen years ago) link

If I get bitten by another werewolf I will consider deleting my account too.

How long before there's a malicious app that tells everyone's entire friends list exactly which porn sites they've been looking at?

Woh, is this Amazon thing true? I just bought a load of Christmas presents on Amazon - is Facebook going to ruin Christmas for all my friends and family? Won't someone think of the children!!

Not the real Village People, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 22:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Show your friends what you like and what you're up to outside of Facebook. When you take actions on the sites listed below, you can choose to have those actions sent to your profile.

Please note that these settings only affect notifications on Facebook. You will still be notified on affiliate websites when they send stories to Facebook. You will be able to decline individual stories at that time.

No sites have tried sending stories to your profile

wtf
