Regarding the Patriots lineman and their beards,
I’m fairly convinced that this is some odd co-opting of Sébastien Chabal’s current look.

Part of it is because both my daddy and my brother also worked in the industry, and people hold me to the standards they've established. To be honest, I don't pay that any mind, but sometimes I do feel like I never wanted to do this job in the first place but I got pushed into it because of everyone else's expectations and now everyone's looking to me and hoping that I screw up so I can prove whatever jackass theories they have about my guts and intensity and I swear sometimes it just makes me want to grab the world by the throat and KEEP CHOKING IT UNTIL IT FALLS TO THE GROUND IN A GIANT HEAP OF SORRY

"Dr. Z's Pick: Giants 24, Patriots 20"
I love the Doc and I hope he is right, but in my gut I have a feeling NE is going to dismantle the Giants in a 49ers style Superbowl laugher.
My pick: Patriots 38 Giants 17
I figure the score is not as close as it looks as the Giants score 10 junk points in the fourth quarter.

dudez, ESPN website = war is the secret subplot of SB42. Wojciechowski and Pasquarelli seem to love the Pats beyond all reason (moreso even that Simmons right now) and Chadiha, Clayton and Easterbrook can barely conceal their hate and bitterness (tho Easterbrook not really trying). the lines were drawn as early as the whole camera business. some guys are gonna end up fuckin' sore in the office on Monday and the others aren't gonna let them get over it.

I'm really surprised at the Dr. Z pick.
I'm not one of the populace who think the Giants have 'no chance', but I've always felt with predictions that you go with whom you truly believe will win, rather than hope.
However, I respect Dr. Z a lot so I figure he based this on more than just a personal desire.
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 February 2008 15:37 (sixteen years ago) link
i think dr z explained in his column a week ago or two weeks ago about how when he was a young(er) sportswriter he felt that the jets would beat the colts and almost put that prediction in print following broadway joe's guarantee. but he succumbed to peer pressure and went with the conventional wisdom that the jets had no chance. he said this is a chance for him to right that wrong.
my prediction: pats 34 giants 27. it won't be a blowout but there won't be many times where the pats are in danger.
― chicago kevin, Sunday, 3 February 2008 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link
its one thing to pick the giants - but to predict the pats only score 20 points - krazy
― jhøshea, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:07 (sixteen years ago) link
I just read Dr. Z's article and I feel that it was fair and well-balanced, as I expected.
jhoshea--I'm not sure why that's crazy, they only scored 21 last week, and 20 a few months ago against the Jets.
It would have been a crazy prediction in weeks 1-8 for sure, but it could happen. There would have to be turnovers though.
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:12 (sixteen years ago) link
yah it would tie their lowest score of the year in a game theyve had two weeks to prepare for. jets game, werent trying; chargers game, brady injured, chargers much better team than giants. aka crazy prediction.
pats gonna pwn eli so hard today !!!!
― jhøshea, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:15 (sixteen years ago) link
jets game, werent trying
Somehow I doubt that. That would suggest that the Patriots actually 'took a game off' in their quest for undefeated. I don't buy it.
brady injured
That may still be true today to some degree, but who knows with Belichick's injury report....and I don't know, with me, ailments bog me down more the day after I first acquire them then when they first creep up, because there's no adrenaline to stabilize it.
chargers much better team than giants.
Yet the Giants came closer to beating them...
Note I'm not penalizing the Chargers for the conference championship, they were way too banged up on offense to achieve anything. And I do believe the Chargers defense is superior, but their offense pales in comparison to what it was last season. except for LT, he's picked up where he left off, there was no way he could repeat what he did last year...
― Bo Jackson Overdrive, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:24 (sixteen years ago) link
dude i hate to be the one to break this to you but the giants are one of the worst superbowl teams ever and the pats are one of the best - this shit will not be close.
jets game - you dont have to take a game off to coast you just coast knowing that this team cant touch you.
and people are reading waaaay too much into to pats v giants part 1. when the pats realized the giants were actually trying to win the game they scored 22 straight points and were ahead by 10 w/1 minute left. that shit wasnt close
― jhøshea, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:31 (sixteen years ago) link
That's the second time you've implied the Patriots were giving half-effort in a game. I don't know what Patriots you watch, but I have yet to see that this season from them. The Giants actually played very well, and then the wheels came off at the end.
You can call them one of the "Worst Super Bowl Teams" all you want. The 'weak NFC argument' won't work this year however, because after defeating the pretty mediocre Buccaneers, they had to defeat the #1 and #2 seeds in the NFC, both of whom were solid teams, on the road, one of the games in the most ridiculous of weather conditions.
I put more stock in this team than I do the 2001 Giants, even though that team won their division.

i hate to be the one to break this to you but sometimes even great professional sports teams give just enough to win - sorry if that hurts your feelings.
winning two v close games doesnt prove youre a good team - especially when all the evidence from the entire season suggests youre the worst team in the playoffs.
its a complete fluke the giants made it this far. if the playoff were run 10 more times i doubt theyd make it to the superbowl once. and theyre abt to get so fucking demolished.
― jhøshea, Sunday, 3 February 2008 16:45 (sixteen years ago) link
I don't know what Patriots you watch, but I have yet to see that this season from them.
did you see the first jets game?
and That would suggest that the Patriots actually 'took a game off' in their quest for undefeated.
the jets game was the first game of the year, do you really think they were on a "quest for undefeated" from the first game of the year? i think the hype started around week 4 and wasn't really taken seriously until after the dallas game.

i still think the pats came out against the giants not expecting to play against the giants starters. i would love to know what belicheck said to the team at halftime. i think that may have been the only game i saw where they didn't give 100% for 60 minutes.
― chicago kevin, Sunday, 3 February 2008 17:11 (sixteen years ago) link
hate to be the one to break this to you but sometimes even great professional sports teams give just enough to win - sorry if that hurts your feelings.
Lol, I'll try to console myself later this evening.
Actually, as one sportswriter aptly said about the Patriots performance in tight games late this season, the way you perform in adversity in tough situations often tells us more about a team than the way they perform in blowouts.
If your definition of a fluke is winning three games on the road, then you and I don't see eye to eye on that.
Besides, I hate to break it to YOU, but that's how the NFL playoffs currently work, always have worked, and always WILL work. It's less about the body of work you put up during the regular season and more about who is hot at the right time. While this is true of other professional sports, it's especially true of a sport that has a single elimination tournament to determine a champion.
It's just that typically speaking, a team that did modestly in the regular season usually did so because they didn't have the talent of upper echelon teams. Occasionally you have the opposite, like the Giants, who had a lot of talent, but underachieve during the regular season.
The Giants that have played the last 4 weeks bear little resemblance to the Giants that had to struggle to put away the Miami Dolphins at midseason. Who, besides the Patriots, has played better football than the Giants in the last month?
If the playoffs were re-run as much as even 100 more times, law of averages states you'd have several different combinations of results, and some of them may even have the Patriots losing a game. That proves absolutely nothing. If you re-ran the regular season 10 times, you'd have different playoff teams too. That's the way football works.
I won't be surprised if the Patriots win--nobody has been able to finish a game against them and they are the best team in the league, undisputed. That fact arguably doesn't even change even if they lose this game--Champions do not necessarily equal the 'best team' in a given season.
However, talk like I'm seeing here is the same talk I saw in 2001 before the Rams-Patriots Super Bowl. I got laughed at much the same way when I said the game wouldn't be a blowout. And right after that game, those excuse makers shifted their vitriol to the officials, claiming they handed the Patriots the game.

Vegas has been wrong several times this postseason already (including all three times against the Giants, who were a 7 point underdog to the Cowboys).
They also missed the Colt game (in which at some points, the Colts were 11 point favorites), hell they wrong against the spread in both Patriots games I believe (I know they did in the Chargers, Jaguars depends as to whether it did wind up at 13 or 14).

Because as majestical and awesome as the Manning-escape/Tyree catch was, it would have gone for naught had they not picked up the 3rd and 11, and Smith had to pick up a tough last 2.5 yards to get that 1st, and then get out of bounds!
