Wu Tang Clan: C/D?

I have trouble listening to Wu's early work now. It's just too emaciated and deliberately crappy sounding (too much weed, basically) especially compared to amazing crispness of Iron Flag (if the Clan have switched from hash cookies to guarana as their pick-me-up of choice I'm not going to complain). Even Supreme Clientele, which I love, sounds a bit drab in places in comparison, but I'm sure that'll pass once I've stopped being excited over Iron Flag.

That said, when I did listen to early Wu-related stuff all the time, my first and biggest love was Only Built 4 Cuban Lynx.

Tim, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

cuban linx definitely still holds up today... it's a really rich record. wu-tang? absolutely classic.

minna, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

As a Wu-tang fan, I would definitely not call "the W" sprawling. It I think it's the shortest group album.

Trey Bien, Friday, 28 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Classic. But later is generally better than earlier. Of course, early WT was so incredible within the genre context of the time.

Melvin van Osterlow, Jr. (res), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 02:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd really be surprised if anybody would ever put "36 Chambers" in the "dud" category. The meat of the debate on ilx is the debate over whether Iron Flag is any good or not, as well as Forever. and it looks like this thread is missing that.

To thread: two people with differing opinions on Iron Flag.

Cattle Grind, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 02:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Cattle Grind, Wednesday, 17 March 2010 02:44 (fourteen years ago) link

so i'm having fun listening to wu massacre. annoying lack of ghostface, who seems to have just grudgingly dropped of a leftover solo track and a few verses, but the production is nice enough, decidedly upbeat throughout. the rza produced track is the most blatanly dilla-aping beat he's ever made (and is very good), and the rest is good but i suppose too familiar to really excite.

no Ghost interview wtf

The writer explains in the article that despite his best efforts he didn't managed to get an interview with him.

The U-God one was a bit sad, with his efforts to do a record with Ghost and his acting dreams and all... Kinda like a rap version The Story of Anvil or something.

no ghost interview is the perfect capstone to the thing, it is what jon lewis is talking abt in another thread--

is there a name for the kind of completion that only occurs when something is omitted?

the phrase you are seeking is "structuring absence"

oh word, when zizek talks about this he calls it Lack like it's an energy source in a fantasy novel the old ham

difficult listening hour, Friday, 21 March 2014 21:01 (ten years ago) link

i think there is a difference b/t lack and structuring absence but in any event the latter phrase is clearer i think

wu-tang killer bees on attack / ghostface's absence might be called "the lack"

According to a press release, the album is executive produced by RZA and “crafted by” DJ Mathematics. As the title suggests, it also features Wu-Tang Clanmembers.

like it's cool that the members of Wu Tang Clan have some features on their new album. def seems like RZA somehow owns"Wu Tang" the business and is holding over everyone's head
