The video makes it so much better. The hair, the catsuits, the jackets, the jewelry, the DANCING--my god. It's heavenly.

Stevie D, Thursday, 31 July 2008 04:35 (fifteen years ago) link

The catsuits, ah yes. They were so zaftig.

Did we find the one song that everyone on ILM likes? After all these years?

Mark Rich@rdson, Thursday, 31 July 2008 05:19 (fifteen years ago) link

everyone except Geir, maybe!

sleeve, Thursday, 31 July 2008 05:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Geir? Your opinion, please. I draw your attention to the interesting modal shifts in this song, its economy of structure, and its use of catchy, tuneful hooks.

moley, Thursday, 31 July 2008 05:37 (fifteen years ago) link

as Pandora Radio might say

This song is sooo BADASS

baaderonixx, Thursday, 31 July 2008 07:38 (fifteen years ago) link

So then, do we really all agree on this?

Someone expand and please tell me why this is a good song and why my friend is wrong for disliking it. What redeems it from the realm of generic pop trash?

Stevie D, Friday, 1 August 2008 03:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Absolute C.L.A.S.S.I.C. for many reasons:
-The Cowbell
-The synth riff: tut-tud-ut-tut-tut-tut-tut-dururururud-(repeat)
-The accompanying Casio synth strings
-The cheap-ass video

daavid, Friday, 1 August 2008 04:07 (fifteen years ago) link

It's anything but generic. What other song sounds like this? Trash, maybe.

Mark Rich@rdson, Friday, 1 August 2008 04:11 (fifteen years ago) link

What redeems it from the realm of generic pop trash?

The thing is it actually IS pop trash, but in the best possible sense.

daavid, Friday, 1 August 2008 04:23 (fifteen years ago) link

this song is beyond classic.

Also weigh the possibility that everyone really likes this song and your friend is just being contrarian to fuck with you.

Classic! But...

No results found for "salt-n-pepa suck".

No results found for "chesney hawkes sucks".
No results found for "jive bunny sucks".
No results found for "timmy mallett sucks".

Science may be letting us down here.

baaderonixx otm, it's a good collision between massive and precise 80s pop production and still sounding really dirty and raw. Brash, but in the best possible way.

I didn't mean to be all challops, I just don't like it! I like how everyone else loves it and gets all happy when they hear it tho. HOW I WISH I COULD SHARE THEIR JOY, etc

Niles Caulder, Sunday, 3 August 2008 14:08 (fifteen years ago) link

There are five results for 'Push It sucks' but most of them are about vacuum cleaners and none of them refer to the song.

Classic obviously, it's at Groove Is In The Heart level of absolute dancefloor bankers, but still feels fresh and exciting whereas Groove Is In The Heart is one of those records everyone likes but is perpetually a bit bored of.

(I'm not) (and I was bored of this song like two listens in)

To make it official, Al Green needs to cover it.

nine years pass...

https://www.ebony.com/entertainment/dj-spinderella-announces-termination-from-salt-n-pepa

DJ Spinderella took to Instagram on Thursday night to announce her departure from the famed hip-hop group Salt -N-Pepa.

According to Spinderella, she received a “termination email” earlier this year that excluded her from performances with the group.

She thought the group members would address her departure publicly, but she was forced to come forward since they remained silent. “It was my expectation, after making that decision, that they would also take responsibility for sharing the news with the public and other affected parties. It has been months now without mention,” the acclaimed DJ said.

Despite her leaving the group, Spinderella said she has a slew of upcoming opportunities in the works. “Please know that you will have the opportunity to see me this summer in many other projects and activities I’ll be participating in and I look forward to seeing you all then.”

News of the veteran’s DJ’s departure from Salt-N-Pepa in January comes as more of a surprise now because last month, it was announced she would be starring alongside the group and SWV for BET’s new Ladies Night reality series.

Pretty sad, though I dunno how active they have been in general since their reunion? Has anyone seen the new BET reality show mentioned in the article, I think it started last week? Apparently it stars both SNP and En Vogue, sounds kinda interesting.

Tuomas, Thursday, 9 May 2019 06:55 (four years ago) link

Also, I dunno if this controversial opinion or not, but I've been listening to a lot of Salt-N-Pepa in the last couple of years, and I've become more and more convinced Blacks' Magic is THE best rap album of the nineties... It seems to me that album, as well as SNP's output in general, has been unfairly ignored in the rap canon because they were women, and because they had pop hits. But it's not like they were MC Hammer or anything, they did have (do have) proper rapping skills as well, and their records have pretty awesome hip hop beats besides the catchy hooks. The title track of Blacks' Magic alone is showcase of everything that was great about them:
