uh, no you don't.

I'd rather listen to a few singles off of the black album than anything but Disposable Heroes or maybe Orion off of Master of Puppets. Much prefer the two albums around it.

Hah, and not my list?? I skipped those when I was browsing the RYM '91 chart. There was also a Monster Magnet and a Kyuss album listed.

Which monster magnet? Spine of God didn't come out until 1992, according to all music. Otherwise I would've listed that. Off your list, I like the Metallica, Entombed, and Soundgarden records, and while I realize the rest have historical importance, I haven't heard/aren't a big fan of a lot of those albums. Florida death metal and the like never did much for me, I much prefer the later Scandinavian stuff. The four that I listed are some of the very first metal CDs that I loved, so it's a sentimental thing for me (besides the fact that those are four very killer albums).

1986 was top-heavy with a handful of indisputable classics.

It's definitely 1983 in my books, followed closely by 1988.

1983 is great too! But the same criticism could be leveled at pretty much any of these lists. 1983, 1994, 1986 are also high on my list. Damn you. Now I'm indecisive. I think 1997 was also a pretty good year for metal. Maybe I'll look that one up.

Just go to the charts, look up the year and then go down the list cutting and pasting discs that are sufficiently metal (and, er, good, I suppose).

It really helped job my memory about things I otherwise would have forgotten about, the exact year, etc...

sometimes it's hard to get a good grip on their release dates 'cause caroline was releasing their stuff in the us while glitterhouse was handling europe. once they were on tour in europe and they found one of their albums in a record store - an album glitterhouse had sworn up and down had not yet been released.

That would be 1990/1991, no? Entombed, Unleashed, Grave, Dismember, Darkthrone, Therion, At The Gates...the whole Swedish "Sunlight studio" death metal invasion. Then the mostly Norwegian black metal invasion of 1993/1994. Nearly everything on your 1997 list is from established acts well into their career, all 3rd/4th albums.

What you say is certainly true, but 1997 was when the more established groups released their arguably best/most influential records (In Flames, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir), and saw debuts from bands that would go on to be pretty huge (Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Hammerfall). I think you can trace back a lot of the metal that's around today to those 1997 releases.

I guess my somewhat roundabout point is that the bands from the 1997 crop went on to be much bigger, popularity-wise, than the 91/94 crop (with the obvious exception of At the Gates). And while some of the bands were on the third/fourth album, those were the albums where they really found their sound. (I also forgot Satyricon's Nemesis Divina)

I think 1980 sounds like an amazing year - esp. for Maiden, Angel Witch, AC/DC, Mr. Kilmister and Saxon.

Reently been grooving on a few gems from '79:

Saxon - Saxon ("I can feel it in the breeze/It's blowin' through the trees" instantly redeemed by "Switchblade's gleamin'/Engine screamin'/I'm laughin' at fate/I'm living to hate"!)
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Motörhead - On Parole (- AMAZING - also makes you dig the fact that Lemmy wrote some of 'awkwind's best songs... rec'd in 1975, though so perhaps not eligible, in which case read as Overkill/Bomber)

Yeah, 1970 has to be it. Deep Purple In Rock also came out that year. Plus Hawkwind's debut. Total quality over quantity

All of this OTM. (You had me on SLB.) Throw in borderline stuff like Fun House, Thank Christ For the Bomb, Free Your Mind & Your Ass Will Follow, Plastic Ono Band, etc. Waning days of psychedelia, blues boom meeting new amplification techniques, all of that stuff.

Thanks guys, this thread is killer to check out some different records and bands on youtube! What is wild about heavy metal in the early days is that a listener pretty much could know almost all of the legit bands before it exploded out into myriads of groups and sub categories.

1985 was the year the music died. punk, hardcore, new wave. everything started to sound shittier too. i'll never understand it. everything in 1984 sounded glorious and in 1985 records sounded like phil collins tin can nightmares. must have been the new technology. things got better later on.

Yeah I mean it's kind of an oversimplification but I consider 84 to be the tail end of analog synth pop and by 86 we are fully into digital workstation synth pop. Metal gets all hissy and tinny the further the decade goes on. SST is basically over by 86. I feel like once the whole flyte time and freestyle models are fully digested things get good again but middle of 80s is rough
