If that's not enough, some more 1991:

Beherit - The Oath Of Black Blood
Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky
Gorefest - Mindloss
Master's Hammer - Ritual
Paradise Lost - Gothic
Sepultura - Arise
Unleashed - Where No Life Dwells
Bathory - Twilight Of The Gods
Root - Hell Symphony

1983 is also classic - that list reads like the soundtrack of my school days.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 19:59 (seventeen years ago) link

uh, no you don't.

I'd rather listen to a few singles off of the black album than anything but Disposable Heroes or maybe Orion off of Master of Puppets. Much prefer the two albums around it.

Those four right there pretty much convinced me that 1991 was the best year

Hah, and not my list?? I skipped those when I was browsing the RYM '91 chart. There was also a Monster Magnet and a Kyuss album listed.

xox, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 20:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Which monster magnet? Spine of God didn't come out until 1992, according to all music. Otherwise I would've listed that. Off your list, I like the Metallica, Entombed, and Soundgarden records, and while I realize the rest have historical importance, I haven't heard/aren't a big fan of a lot of those albums. Florida death metal and the like never did much for me, I much prefer the later Scandinavian stuff. The four that I listed are some of the very first metal CDs that I loved, so it's a sentimental thing for me (besides the fact that those are four very killer albums).

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 21:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I dunno.... I look at the 1991 list and all I can think is "almost all of those bands did better albums than those." Which doesn't mean those albums suck or anything, but still...

NYCNative, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 23:51 (seventeen years ago) link

1986 was top-heavy with a handful of indisputable classics.

It's definitely 1983 in my books, followed closely by 1988.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 23:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm being talked into 1983 now (which is fine since by posting the list I started the talking myself!) however I would like to see 1988... Can you, A. Bergrand? (I almost typed "Bergie" but realized you might smite me.)

NYCNative, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 23:59 (seventeen years ago) link

1983 is great too! But the same criticism could be leveled at pretty much any of these lists. 1983, 1994, 1986 are also high on my list. Damn you. Now I'm indecisive. I think 1997 was also a pretty good year for metal. Maybe I'll look that one up.

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 00:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll have to check out 1985 as well...

NYCNative, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 00:05 (seventeen years ago) link

(How do you research by year for metal in rate your music? I've never used it before.)

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 00:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Just go to the charts, look up the year and then go down the list cutting and pasting discs that are sufficiently metal (and, er, good, I suppose).

It really helped job my memory about things I otherwise would have forgotten about, the exact year, etc...

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 00:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Glancing over the list, 1997 was definitely the beginning of the Scandinavian invasion. So there's its importance right there, great albums notwithstanding.

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 00:31 (seventeen years ago) link

1985 was the weakest year on the 80s, easily. I'll post an attempt at a 1988 list right away here.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 00:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I WIELD MUCH POWER!

NYCNative, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 00:57 (seventeen years ago) link

So much great metal! I rescind my somewhat hasty endorsement of 1991, and will wait until all the nominations are in. I'm favoring 1997 right now, since I, you know, put all that effort in, but 1983, 1984, 1988, and 1994 are all pretty great as well.

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 01:22 (seventeen years ago) link

i did give a shout-out to 1984! but like i said, i can't pick a year. there are lots of good years for different reasons.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 01:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Scott's arrival on this thread reminds me, I forgot:

Katatonia - Brave Murder Day

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 01:39 (seventeen years ago) link

i see 1984 as, like, the future of everything. especially when you add hellhammer to the list.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 01:42 (seventeen years ago) link

and you forgot 1984 on the 1984 list! that had to be the future of something too.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 01:44 (seventeen years ago) link

go ahead, tell me 1984 actually came out in 1983.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 01:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought 1984 came out in late 1983, but wikipedia says January 9, 1984.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 01:46 (seventeen years ago) link

ha!

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 01:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, 1984 did beget pretty much everything in the two decades to follow, didn't it? That might be the winner.

This thread is great, though. It's like a "to buy" list.

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 01:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I rescind my somewhat hasty endorsement of 1991

Booo. I stand by '91.

No Manilla Road on any of these 80s lists? One of the only 80s metal bands I like. Crystal Logic is a major classic for '83.

xox, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 01:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Which monster magnet? Spine of God didn't come out until 1992, according to all music.

I haven't consulted my MM grimoire, but I'm pretty sure spine of god is 1991 and tab is 1992.

Edward III, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 02:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Wikipedia says that both Spine of God and Tab were 1991.

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 02:11 (seventeen years ago) link

sometimes it's hard to get a good grip on their release dates 'cause caroline was releasing their stuff in the us while glitterhouse was handling europe. once they were on tour in europe and they found one of their albums in a record store - an album glitterhouse had sworn up and down had not yet been released.

Edward III, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 02:27 (seventeen years ago) link

man, i was watching some old live version of fade to black on youtube last nite and just shaking my head the whole time. how could a band that got it so right go so wrong. i finally watched those live versions of two new songs that are gonna be on the new metallica album and they are soooo sad. other than a couple of kirk solos.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 04:23 (seventeen years ago) link

oh yeah the cool guy who made them cool for a short period died. i always forget.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 04:27 (seventeen years ago) link

1997 was definitely the beginning of the Scandinavian invasion

That would be 1990/1991, no? Entombed, Unleashed, Grave, Dismember, Darkthrone, Therion, At The Gates...the whole Swedish "Sunlight studio" death metal invasion. Then the mostly Norwegian black metal invasion of 1993/1994. Nearly everything on your 1997 list is from established acts well into their career, all 3rd/4th albums.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 09:39 (seventeen years ago) link

NYCNative, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 12:43 (seventeen years ago) link

2002 wasn't bad as far as things go!

You know the rules... Post your list... :)

NYCNative, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:24 (seventeen years ago) link

oh sorry - don't have time. I remember that was the year I was most listneing to metal though.

the next grozart, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 13:28 (seventeen years ago) link

What you say is certainly true, but 1997 was when the more established groups released their arguably best/most influential records (In Flames, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir), and saw debuts from bands that would go on to be pretty huge (Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Hammerfall). I think you can trace back a lot of the metal that's around today to those 1997 releases.

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 19:10 (seventeen years ago) link

(You know what? I'm going to stop saying stuff about metal history, it only leads to sorrow.)

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 19:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I guess my somewhat roundabout point is that the bands from the 1997 crop went on to be much bigger, popularity-wise, than the 91/94 crop (with the obvious exception of At the Gates). And while some of the bands were on the third/fourth album, those were the albums where they really found their sound. (I also forgot Satyricon's Nemesis Divina)

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 19:32 (seventeen years ago) link

And as far as this decade goes, I don't remember 2002 as being particularly good. I think the best year thus far was 2005, although 2007 is shaping up to be a corker.

Some love, please, for 1980 - with some landmarks, the best post-Purple albums from Coverdale and Gillan, the best Ozzy solo and best post-Ozzy sabs, plus NWOBHM in its youth. Slightly letdown by misses from some big hitters.

I think 1980 sounds like an amazing year - esp. for Maiden, Angel Witch, AC/DC, Mr. Kilmister and Saxon.

Reently been grooving on a few gems from '79:

Saxon - Saxon ("I can feel it in the breeze/It's blowin' through the trees" instantly redeemed by "Switchblade's gleamin'/Engine screamin'/I'm laughin' at fate/I'm living to hate"!)
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Motörhead - On Parole (- AMAZING - also makes you dig the fact that Lemmy wrote some of 'awkwind's best songs... rec'd in 1975, though so perhaps not eligible, in which case read as Overkill/Bomber)

Miles Davis Kinda Blew (Rombald), Monday, 6 April 2009 20:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Mind you, I just got the 3CD Diamond Head set that Universal is putting out. And Am I Evil doesn't sound anywhere near as big and scary as it did when I was 12.

How can it *not* be 1970?

There's a lot more that opens up if we include stuff that is listed as "Hard Rock"...

Yeah, 1970 has to be it. Deep Purple In Rock also came out that year. Plus Hawkwind's debut. Total quality over quantity

All of this OTM. (You had me on SLB.) Throw in borderline stuff like Fun House, Thank Christ For the Bomb, Free Your Mind & Your Ass Will Follow, Plastic Ono Band, etc. Waning days of psychedelia, blues boom meeting new amplification techniques, all of that stuff.

Thanks guys, this thread is killer to check out some different records and bands on youtube! What is wild about heavy metal in the early days is that a listener pretty much could know almost all of the legit bands before it exploded out into myriads of groups and sub categories.

one year passes...

1970 totally the year for general heaviness. Add Yeti to the mix.

nycnative still 86 for you?

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 15 August 2015 12:58 (eight years ago) link

Something makes me smile about the idea of metallers getting together and discussing which was the best vintage, as if heavy metal were wine, y'know. "Oh my, such a fine crop harvested in '88 by the harvesters of sorrow... and what's this?" ... "This be 'Reign In Blood', '86 vintage!" ... "Oooh, this is totally on the nose"

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Saturday, 15 August 2015 13:32 (eight years ago) link

"I'm getting... *clicks fingers*... hints of apocalyptic doom, I'm getting sick riffs, I'm getting... *clicks fingers* whiffs of thundering blastbeats... this should go well with a serving of sweat and headbanging at the Headbanger's Ball"

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Saturday, 15 August 2015 13:35 (eight years ago) link

"I heartily don't recommend the '97 vintage 'Re-Load', tastes like brine with a vague hint of piss" ... "Oh yeah, that's fair!"

*at this point, Devin Townsend enters the room*

HevyDevy: "Olive?"

1985 was the weakest year on the 80s, easily. I'll post an attempt at a 1988 list right away here.

1985 was the year the music died. punk, hardcore, new wave. everything started to sound shittier too. i'll never understand it. everything in 1984 sounded glorious and in 1985 records sounded like phil collins tin can nightmares. must have been the new technology. things got better later on.

scott seward, Saturday, 15 August 2015 13:45 (eight years ago) link

(hardcore especially. 1980 to 1984 a genius record every week and then all of a sudden MRR covers nothing but mr. t experience and doggy style or bl'ast! thank god for sweden and finland....)

Two words: Digital Reverb

earlnash, Saturday, 15 August 2015 17:29 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I mean it's kind of an oversimplification but I consider 84 to be the tail end of analog synth pop and by 86 we are fully into digital workstation synth pop. Metal gets all hissy and tinny the further the decade goes on. SST is basically over by 86. I feel like once the whole flyte time and freestyle models are fully digested things get good again but middle of 80s is rough

Was going to say, two more words: drum triggers, but apparently those came along a few years later.
