hearing 'pocket calculator' for the first time was my introduction to kraftwerk, so this is always gonna be classic++ for me.

slackety yax (H2-H4), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 01:53 (seventeen years ago) link

"Computer Love" makes my circuitry spark and hiss.

So so OTM. I want that song played at my wedding. No, really.

Charlie Brown (kenan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 02:28 (seventeen years ago) link

(This could be a clue as to why I am unmarried. But it beats the hell outta "At Last".)

Charlie Brown (kenan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 02:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I was thinking about how Numbers used to be ubiquitous in Detroit in the 90's. That record was everywhere back in the day.

The only negative thing I can say about this record is that Coldplay jacked Computer Love for the guitar lead on that crap single, and this was compounded by The Killers jacking Coldplay jacking Kraftwerk and mixing it with Born To Run by Springsteen for that crap single for their second record.

The devil's water doesn't taste so sweet...

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 05:50 (seventeen years ago) link

M.T., you cut to the chase. The bastard children are terrifying.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 05:56 (seventeen years ago) link

this album sucks. you oughta try some anthony rother, now there's REAL electro.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 05:58 (seventeen years ago) link

The other thing that is funny about this record is that it seems completely northern to me. If you are not used to seeing your breath in the winter this record doesn't make as much sense. When I think of this record, I think of the orange light coming from behind barbed wire fenced industrial sites. I would drive around these empty spaces in the middle of a cold winter nights during my late teens and early 20's. Just me, the radio and these somber concrete buildings.

I used to hear Kraftwerk on the radio at least once a week back home. I don't think I have heard Kraftwerk once on the radio in the three years I've been in Texas.

Vahid's ironically deaf; he removed his eardrums as a protest against the tax system.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 06:12 (seventeen years ago) link

every single track on "simulationszeitalter" uses the beat from "computer world"

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 06:13 (seventeen years ago) link

phew! You had me worried about you for a second, Vahid.

Vahid is the Irwin Schiff of techno...

Kraftwerk is false techno? um...

Charlie Brown (kenan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 06:32 (seventeen years ago) link

well, it's not REAL TECHNO, is it??

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 06:35 (seventeen years ago) link

is this real techno: http://www.discogs.com/release/4283
?

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 06:39 (seventeen years ago) link

the untitled track sort of sounds like aphex twin

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 06:39 (seventeen years ago) link

It's neither false nor techno, is my point.

Charlie Brown (kenan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 06:42 (seventeen years ago) link

every single track on "simulationszeitalter" uses the beat from "computer world"

I'm still trying to parse how this reflects badly on Kraftwerk.

Charlie Brown (kenan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 06:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I really really want this album because I reeeeeeeeeeally love "Computer World," "Computer Love," and "Pocket Calculator."

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 23 January 2007 07:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm the op-er-a-tor with my POCK-et calc-u-la-tor!

When "Computer Love" kicks in with the full force beatz about halfway through it's like the happiest moment of my life.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 23 January 2007 07:31 (seventeen years ago) link

That is the power of the hi-hat.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 23 January 2007 07:32 (seventeen years ago) link

a masterpiece

friday on the porch (lfam), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 08:47 (seventeen years ago) link

This is not Kraftwerk finest hours but it is obviously better than the amelodic, rhythm-dominate techno which it accident invent. It is evidence of their starting decline that on Computer Lover they have to rip off the Coldplays.

Comstock Carabineri (nostudium), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 09:16 (seventeen years ago) link

When the hell are the K'werk remasters gonna appear?

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 10:04 (seventeen years ago) link

That primitive PC on the cover - isn't that the cutest thing?!

Anyway, I've never heard Computer Love, sorry. (Not a huge Kraftwerk fan tho I do love Menschmaschine). But Rick Johnson's review in CREEM was fucking hilarious as usual. And check this out:

1981 Computer-World Black Albums #32
1981 Computer-World Pop Albums #72

Tis Kraftwerk at their most sublime. Which is v.sublime indeed.

The inner sleeve artwork should be the outer sleeve artwork tho'. And vice versa.

Will someone PLEASE link me back to the thread about best Kraftwerk album poll?

I was duped twice! i TAKE BACK EVERYTHING I said this is the best Kraftwerk album bar none. But where is the damn thread?

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 05:28 (fifteen years ago) link

In the interest of Fair and Balanced, Man Machine is pretty damn good, too. And I don't often listen to Trans Europe Express in one sitting, but I'm still kind unexpectedly charmed when I shuffle the iPod and get, say, "Franz Schubert".

But this is still myfavorite Kraftwerk album.

kenan, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 06:24 (fifteen years ago) link

ha, bimble: i can never actually decide which is my favourite. i can't even remember which i voted in that poll (though it would have been this or radio-activity).

damn, i'm in the mood for some kraftwerk now.

grimly fiendish, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 11:49 (fifteen years ago) link

i think the remix of computer love is actually a bit better than the original

It's not possible to be more wrong than this

I love Man-Machine, and I think I may have even voted for it in that poll, but somehow it sounds more like a period piece than Computer World. Computer World could have been released any year from 1981 to the present and it would still be incredible. Mad props to Man-Machine still, though.

three years pass...

somebody out there please explain to me why this is not the greatest album ever made. because i'm listening to it right now and it is absolutely 100% perfect.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 21:09 (twelve years ago) link

i tend to agree. so, so perfect.

1986 Olive Garden (Z S), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

yeah. i'd say radioactivity is just as good, though.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 02:00 (twelve years ago) link

I've never cared for this album as much as the 4 70s albums. I think it shows the beginnings of the creative drought which hit them big time with Electric Cafe.

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 10:20 (twelve years ago) link

no. this is the best kraftwerk album.

The very very subtly different 12" mix, strips out some of the syncopation, turns up the snare

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 10:51 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know if I really buy that anagram. they were plenty creative on CW. the problem is they never really figured out where to go from there.

frogbs, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 10:52 (twelve years ago) link

Main reason to have that single on vinyl is to have a 45 rpm full-side pressing of 'numbers' xpost

Everyone knows the best kraftwerk album is the debut

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 10:53 (twelve years ago) link

the problem is they took so long after computer world that they got beat at their own game in the meantime

I listened to this again today and it was some of the most pleasure I've gotten from music in a while. It even completely fit the beautiful sunny weather.

jmm, Monday, 29 September 2014 00:20 (nine years ago) link

The only negative I can't think of is that "It's More Fun to Compute", while an excellent song, doesn't really feel like a good closer.

Couldn't disagree more, it's a perfect closer (like 'Morgenspaziergang' or 'Franz Schubert').

The Count has shot himself (Tom D.), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 14:28 (nine years ago) link

It's a good closer, just not an obvious closer. It could have worked as well earlier in the album.

brimstead, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 02:43 (five years ago) link

yeah I take back what I said seven years ago, this is 100% great. Also, if anyone hasn't heard the Tokyo 1981 live boot, it's essential.

the word dog doesn't bark (anagram), Wednesday, 13 March 2019 08:35 (five years ago) link

I bought some nice speakers a couple of years ago. They haven't exactly blown me away, I must be honest. However, the one album that makes me go 'oh wow, that's why I invested in these speakers' is Computer World. There are these little electronic fireworks going off all over the place. I have totally fallen in love with the record all over again.
