Seeing the Mekons at their 25th(!) anniversary shows in Chicago a ccouple of years ago, the opening band was the Sadies (billed as the Nelsons or something like that - a Mekons tribute band). They ended their set with "Where Were You", with the Mekons joining them. A true, great, rock and roll moment!

So fantastic, this one.

Ok, I can hear where super roots 7 gets the sound from

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh god, there was a 1994 Mekons gig in London where I was utterly beside myself with joy the whole time, for reasons including but not limited to the show; I shouted for "Where Were You" a few times and finally they closed with it and it killed. SO PERFECT.

Ros Allen from Delta 5 played bass on the single.

my fave live mekons moment? Seeing them at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC a few years ago, they played the most hard-core, rock and fucking roll cover version of Fancy by the Kinks.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 19 January 2006 22:58 (eighteen years ago) link

is anything else (other than "Never been in In A Riot") by the mekons as worthy of such love ?

1. "Memphis, Egypt"
2. "Rosanne" (new version on 2004's Punk Rock -- hi, Gang of Four, the Mekons called, they want their wacky little idea back)
3. "Empire of the Senseless"
4. "Vengeance": In the steaming rain my clothes are wet / I'll never rest and I'll never forget.

xero (xero), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Semi-OT, but these days pretty much all I want to do is listen to Super Roots 7.

This is also an unfathomably great song.

danski (danski), Thursday, 19 January 2006 23:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Haha, a year or so ago someone posted a question to the effect that "Boriginal" sounded an awful lot like "Where Were You" and had anyone else noticed the resemblance. The questioner was swiftly answered in top ILM style and the thread died a merciful death. It is also possible that the questioner was me.

Someone beat me to saying everything. But especially:
"Last Dance"

Are there any threads just about Tom Greenhalgh's voice yet?

Postcard from Walker Art Center today:

Jon Langford, The Executioner's Last Songs. Best known as the frontman for the Mekons, Jon Langford has created a mordantly beautiful performance work — The Executioner's Last Songs — that is a compelling collection of tales and songs on the themes of murder, mob law, and cruel, cruel punishment. Langford takes us on a twisting and witty autobiographical ride that looks unflinchingly at the promises of life and the penalty of death. The performance combines live music, spoken word, his own visual art, and recordings of American roots music.

What the hell. I might go.

xero (xero), Friday, 20 January 2006 00:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Have you seen Langford before? He's always worth it, with or without a band. He's hysterical. His art's good too, if you're into that kinda thing.

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Friday, 20 January 2006 01:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Oy. I just read your previous post about 1994 in London. Sorry.

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Friday, 20 January 2006 01:02 (eighteen years ago) link

i never knew about that boredoms record, wow, i bet that rules!

as a kid in miami listening to this single with my exposure to british people a bit limited (anbd this being pre-netflix) i'd never heard the word "queue" and didn't know what it meant so i always misheard them singing "i was standing in a Q, did you see me?!" and pictured a giant letter Q like from sesame street or something...

my business partner in YETI just released the super fancy full color book that's an accompaniment to that langford thing, fyi -- a big book of his paintings with a cd stuck to it.

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Friday, 20 January 2006 01:03 (eighteen years ago) link

From what I gather, Langford makes more of a living with his visual art than his music.

peepee (peepee), Friday, 20 January 2006 01:11 (eighteen years ago) link

He has a radio show on WXRT in Chicago.

xero (xero), Friday, 20 January 2006 01:20 (eighteen years ago) link

my friend violet's mom had an ice cream parlour in danbury, ct, and somehow my brother, dan bunnybrain, got mekons to come play there and it is one of the highlights of my life (this was, um, in the 80's sometime). every song was just ridiculously great. and every song they played was better then the last. they just kept peaking and peaking. and they never stopped! the tiny spot was packed and by the end of it we were all a ragged mess. we were ready to die for mekons. to pledge our lives to the band. they rocked us mercilessly. i'll never forget that feeling of utter joy.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 20 January 2006 01:26 (eighteen years ago) link

That Danbury show was 1992, I believe. I lived there when it happened, had never heard the band, didn't go, and even just typing this brings me close to tears.

"Are there any threads just about Tom Greenhalgh's voice yet?"
...Brilliant--there should be. He is incredible! And what a stylish dude, too. Lawrence from Felt, the guy from Orange Juice, no one comes close to his fucked up, smart delivery.

My god, they are -- still -- PERFECT live. All banter is so clearly new and unrehearsed, and always so funny. Hard to imagine a band could be so talented, diverse, catchy, fun, funny, dirty, serious, political, and drunk, and all at the same time!

It is SO hard to get someone into more than just one Mekons song, or just one Mekons record. I feel like it takes a lot of listening or at least attention to figure out why nearly everything they did/do matters or is at least interesting or funny.

"Journey To the End of the Night": Gorgeous, vital, and underrated album. If it was by a new band, I think it may have gotten a lot of attention when it was released.

I already have tickets for the Executioner's Last Songs. I think there's an old performance somewhere on the Live Music Archive. It sounds pretty fun.

Here's a YSI of "Where Were You" - live at Middle East downstairs from the 25th Anniversary Tour. Play loud!

do you love me?!?!?

jon langford is hugley entertaining character.
last 3 johns gig ever, after several classics, the crowd are loving it : he looks at the drum machine, visually grimaces .. turns to jon and says 'oh fuck, its the hard one'. the night despite being their final ever gig was full of genuine laffs.

I just got the CD version of the Mekons' New York with "Where Were You" as a bonus track. So so lovely, but the original single is where it's at. "Boriginal" is maybe my favorite Boredoms thing ever. Great stuff.

sleeve (sleeve), Monday, 23 January 2006 21:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Did they release a contemporaneous album?

Or had they moved on, stylistically, by the time of "Strnen" ?

zeus (zeus), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Throughout their '90s gigs, they had their roadie do the lead vocals on it!

I've seen them live 20-25 times, likely. Circa 1987, Tom Greenhalgh was one especially sexy motherfucker. (more a spectacular onstage drunk the last few times)

I'm not ready for this to disappear from New Answers yet.

...
Someone beat me to saying everything. But especially:
"Last Dance"

"Last Dance" was a criminal omission from my list. Crying at sad waltzes when drunk is surely a key aspect of the Mekons experience. "IT'LL BE ALL RIIIGHT!!!"

I think there's an old performance [of "The Executioner's Last Songs"] somewhere on the Live Music Archive. It sounds pretty fun.

I'm downloading the April 2005 one now -- thanks for the tip. Some Minutemen and Dream Syndicate shows are archived there too, as well as many ancient Mekons gigs.

"Boriginal" is maybe my favorite Boredoms thing ever.

Seconded, minus the "maybe." "Where Were You" homage + transcendent space-rock = we have a winner!

Circa 1987, Tom Greenhalgh was one especially sexy motherfucker

I can see why a person would say this. Speaking of hot Mekons, my ex had quite a crush on Sally Timms and I could not fault him for it.

Live cover of "Rosanne" by another crap band from that old-tymey Leeds scene, Chicago 1979.

New album Natural coming soon! I know nothing else about it!

Also, for anyone in Seattle, Langford and Timms are doing their Executioner's Last Songs show there on the 5th. It's a great time.

got it! taken it for a coupla spins so far and it seems to be flat-out wonderful. Jonboy's passion alone could carry the load, butthe whole package, the band and songs, sound inspired .

I've been thinking that the new Arcade Fire track "Intervention" reminds me of the Mekons. Specifically one of the songs that Tom would sing.

All their early singles are amazing as well as their debut, which has been criminally out of print for eons. Good thing it's all out in blogland.
