better at the 'wrong' speed

I had a copy of the Plasmatics 'Metal Priestess' that sounded really good on 45 - it sounded a lot like Bad Brains!

and kraftwerk's tour de france 12" is also a winner slwoed down.

Then I think actual sub-styles of drum&bass popped up that were based on those new, slower tempos. "Breakstep" or "liquid funk" or something, I had sorta moved on by then so I'm not sure about those.

True for some tracks, but in general just a cop-out. The trick with drum & bass is feeling the rhythm and half-speed and full speed simultaneously. It's the only way to dance to it and not get exhausted. The songs are written at the speed they're written at to express the raw power a Juno 106 is capable of.

I vote for KMFDM's "Naive" 12". Actually, maybe it's the remix by TKK, but it always sounded better at 33 than 45 to me. And of course Carl Craig's "Bug In The Bassbin" gained notoreity among D&B heads as quite a sick song at 45 rather than 33.

and for cars you could also hook the shit up to the automotive hardware, so like turning the wheel would make the sound pan into the opposite speaker, or the accelerator could control instensity of flange effect or something ------

(that's a million dollar idea right there if anybody wants to run with it ------- I mean car culture and music culture are tight ---- that shit could be the new frontier in tricking out your vehicle)

I also recently learned that if you increase the pitch and reverse "Come Wind, Come Rain" by Vashti Bunyan she can clearly be heard singing "Boromir" at one point. Or maybe I'm just too much of a Tolkien geek...

Shakey OTM. The first Butthole album I got was the live PCPPEP, which is a 12" meant to be played at 45rpm. I hadn't ever heard them, or at that point come across a 12" that wasn't played at 33rpm. Hands down the most disturbing and revelatory listening experience I've ever had. Was a couple of weeks listening to it that way before I forget to change the speed after some 7" listening; it was almost equally as revelatory and disturbing at the proper speed.

Still throw it on at 33 now and again to marvel at the madness.

I have a 12" 45 of "Number of the Beast" by Iron Maiden that I often Dj at 33rpm. It sounds so heavy and Bruce sounds so manly...

WFMU had a Halloween mix a few years back that included a version of John Cale’s Heartbreak Hotel played at 45 rpm (or something). It is freaky and super-demented.

My mp3 of Robin S' Show Me Love is a good 10 bpm too fast due to being from a mix CD, and I much prefer it that way.

Most Azari & III sounds better sped up. The Whip's "Divebomb" has to be sped way up and then it's great!

back in the 00s the hype machine dot com would use a pop-out music player for its many aggregated mp3s and occasionally the player would bug out and play a song 1.5x or 2x too fast, and i'd listen to that song thinking that was the real speed only to face disappointment. then i'd have to edit the song in audacity to make it good again

i remember doing this for 2 songs specifically: "dead" by MCR and "rule of three" by the lemonheads

My great annoyance with speed is the Autechre promo "splitrmx" - there is no speed marking on it, it's one track per side on a 12", but the consensus is 33rpm. However I like it far better at 45.
