This was horrible. it had none of waht the other chapters had. no over the top camp at all. just boring drama.

I guess we're supposed drive ourselves crazy wondering if Chuck is a) bisexual, or b) a closeted gay man who is married to a woman. However, Chuck's character is poorly developed compared to the other major players, so I'm not sure what reason we'd have to care about his story.

Also, the "chuck said rufus said kathy said x 5739393" part was more over the top than anything in Parts 1-5.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 29 August 2005 05:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah I was not feeling the ending where he's cured of gay. Thumbs down for ch. 6.

deej.., Monday, 29 August 2005 06:36 (eighteen years ago) link

by over the top i was thinking more along the lines of the baretta nd the leg cramp. I also was hoping for a cliffhanger too which is a big part of my dissapointment.

jmeister (jmeister), Monday, 29 August 2005 06:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah I was not feeling the ending where he's cured of gay.

I didn't really take it that way, more that he's "cured" of cheating in general. Rufus' final moment with Chuck is tender. I think if R. Kelly wanted to make a statement on curing homosexuality, Rufus wouldn't have kissed Chuck. And Chuck would have spontaneously combusted, burning in hell right before our ears. R's been a lot more sensitive about the gay thing than I ever would have suspected. Plus the whole pro-marriage vows stance seems more in line with "Closet" and Robert's brand of retardation.

Anyway, I posted an MP3 of "Part 6" that I recorded from the show. It's here:

I agree with Rich. I don't see it as an anti gay statement. in the rnb/hiphop environment, I almost find the way he treats this quite bold !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:49 (eighteen years ago) link

How come Kelly could only seem to hit one tone, that of moderately outraged? There were no dynamics and I couldn't figure out which voice he was supposed to be taking time after time. Oh, and the random threats of violence every couple of lines? WTF?

js (honestengine), Monday, 29 August 2005 17:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Is this whole saga the most useless piece of music ever made, or is it just me?

Chapter 6: Phantom Menace...big letdown.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 29 August 2005 17:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I heard there's going to be 10 parts total. Is that true? He seemed to wrap up the Rufus/Kathy storyline last night.

This is one of those songs I don't want to ever end, like Dylan's Highlands.

I thought the performance was spectacular.

Rich has a point, but I still think the cheer at the end when Rufus goes back to kathy was a bit...ugh.

deej.., Monday, 29 August 2005 18:34 (eighteen years ago) link

uh yeah i know everybody wanna jump over each other to prove how un-homophobic yall are but anyone who thinks the audience at the damn MTV AWARDS was cheering for an ephebophiliac piss-fetishist upholding the sanctity of marriage instead of CHEERING AT THE END OF A PERFORMANCE is trippin right now- do yall also think applause the end of that green day song means the black eyed peas call for the death of american soldiers??

3, Monday, 29 August 2005 18:53 (eighteen years ago) link

3 OTM...I listened to it...it seems like normal applause.

Oh fuck you ethan.

deej.., Monday, 29 August 2005 19:33 (eighteen years ago) link

I couldnt give a shit whether ILM thinks i'm PC enough or not, the performance made my ass uncomfortable, the whole room full of people cheering when the man decides to stay with his wife after cheating on her with a man just did not ring true to me and it was a weird end to the whole thing.

deej.., Monday, 29 August 2005 19:36 (eighteen years ago) link

so if the song ended 'no KATHY-- IM STAYIN WITH CHUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' and those big orchestra hits went off and r is clasping his fists lookin towards the sky then the audience wouldve booed him? or just remained silent??

ugh I'm not arguing that the crowd all hate gays, but i bet the cheers would have been more dampened! and like rich said, part of that would be people glad that people are keeping their vows but i have a sneaking suspicion, and it immediately leapt to my mind when I saw/heard them, that some, maybe just a few! some people were glad he'd rejected the homophobic fantasy in favor of settling back down with his good old wife.

How many on the DL dudes do you know who are bi like that?!

deej.., Monday, 29 August 2005 19:47 (eighteen years ago) link

dude what the fuck it was the end of the song and ppl cheered

3, Monday, 29 August 2005 19:48 (eighteen years ago) link

"man, this homo thing was working, but i think i'm going back to the ol lady."

(xp haha @ the idea that madonna+britney kiss has anything to do with the assault homosexuality poses on our family values!!!)

deej.., Monday, 29 August 2005 19:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I think you're reading more into what I said than actually exists. "it made me uncomfortable." the end. I'm not advocating Colin Powell's relatives lockdown television again or something.

deej.., Monday, 29 August 2005 19:50 (eighteen years ago) link

i mean mayyyyybe you can accuse r kelly of constructing a narrative from hetero-centric sources but that crowd was gonna go bananas at the end of the song whether rufus decided to stay with his wife or perform krapps last tape

3, Monday, 29 August 2005 19:51 (eighteen years ago) link

I actually felt the same thing about the cheering -- it did have a kick of overenthusiasm. But that's not R. Kelly's fault, per se. He's actually really impressed me here. Certainly, he seems to understand the possibility of bisexuality, which is more than could be said for a lot of homos, even. Aside from the shock at the initial disclosure that Rufus' lover is a man (man, man), there's really no judgment on his part. He even allows for his gay-sexin' characters to have made "love."

To me, this is the most interesting part of the "Closet" ordeal, which I felt wasn't clever enough to merit its bombast. I'm kinda sorry that I doubted him.

Rich (Rich), Monday, 29 August 2005 19:52 (eighteen years ago) link

so deej if we had an applause-o-meter on for the alternate versionwhere rufus stays with chuck how many less ppl would be cheering? 10%? 50%?? just common, maybe?

3, Monday, 29 August 2005 19:56 (eighteen years ago) link

look im sure some dudes (rappers, haircut rockers) at the vmas are a lil homophobic or scared of their own gay vibes but to pretend that cheering the end of a new r kelly song had anything to do with that is total bullshit

3, Monday, 29 August 2005 19:58 (eighteen years ago) link

What are you trying to prove? That I reacted that way because I want ILM to know how PC I am?

deej.., Monday, 29 August 2005 19:58 (eighteen years ago) link

3 I think the reasons people cheered are many. layers. like an onion.

deej.., Monday, 29 August 2005 19:59 (eighteen years ago) link

"its the end of the song, let's clap shall we?" is only one of MANY possible interpretations! It's all a beautiful tapestry.

3 is totally otm, you guys are nuts. and even if people were applauding the dude going back to his wife (tho that's incredibly unlikely), that doesn't necessarily make them homophobic!! wtf! dude cheated on his wife but is hoping to be redeemed. if rufus cheated with a chick and then went back to his wife would your hypothetical homophobic applauders be all like yelling out "fuck that rufus, tap that ass!!!!" sheesh.

Candicissima (candicissima), Monday, 12 September 2005 12:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Ha! Okay, I can buy that. I recognizie that the mere fact of the performance's existence is kind of a watershed "WTF????" moment in MTV history but that doesn't change the fact that I thought it was incoherent, haphazard and not nearly as entertaining as it should have been.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 12 September 2005 12:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I think at this point in the Trapped ILM saga, whether or not a given installment turns out to be incoherent or "as entertaining as it should have been" is a good portion of the entertainment all in itself. Especially given that so many people were upset at the soap-opera presentation of the Chapters 1-5 videos and wished it was R. acting it out with minimal props, some of these will have been delighted that he tried it, and many others will have learned, as Most Holy taught, that "you can get what you want and still not be very happy."

Me, I found the performance completely half-arsed and disappointing, but enormously enjoyed watching how Kelly's disconnect from reality enabled him to deliver something so half-arsed and disappointing in such an earnest manner.

three weeks pass...
did no one see the special on "chapter 6" -- the real chapter 6, not the rufus/kathy/chuck bow-tie -- that aired on BET last night?

some facts gleaned:
the saga is written through chapter 22.
chuck's backstory: he was a transvestite hustler in san francisco who moved to chicago and was saved by rufus' preaching.
twan's backstory: he was running drugs from chicago to atlanta and got busted, and he's just getting out of prison.
the guy playing the cop in chapters 6-12 (out on dvd on 11/1) is not the same guy who played the cop in chapter 4's original edit.

also r kelly did an amazing imitation of himself as an old man, asking what chapter he was up to.

finally, a gun that was introduced in the first segment does, indeed, go off.

Man, I saw the MTV performance of Chapter 6 and I can't believe anyone took this seriously. It was hilariously badly written and performed. "He said this, then she said that, then this other guy said something" ad nauseum.

"Rufus says Chuck we'll talk about it later
then Cathy says this shit is said
Chuck says Rufus I'm leaving, are you coming?
Cathy says Rufus, then Chuck says Rufus
Rufus looks at Chuck and says: Chuck you know I love you"

Surely this is lame. Maybe it works if it's performed by more than one guy but as a one man performance this was just laughable.
