and for that matter, what about the other totally non-musical band that's garnering a lot of attention these days: jackie-o-motherfucker.

the editors of the wire must be snorting meth if they can really read anything into j-o-m's music beside it being bunch of pretentious pot smokers jamming on some half-developed riffs. their music is a cop out. no effort.

same for NNCK. their music is an even worse cop-out. dreadful, miserably amateurish stuff.

sorry.

Loose lips sink ships.

I'm not tellin!

Gage-o, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Fair enough. But one last question out of curiosity: Have I heard of your band?

Mark, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dependant on how familiar you are with the Austin Music Scene between 1994 and 1999.

Gage-o, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Not likely, unless you're related to Shelia E.

Mark, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Got one track on last months wire CD but also a double LP documenting a live gig on their own label. You can see why Fahey liked them since they have this peculiar take on improvisation and yet they align with this very primitive, undestated sound. They do have a sound of their own though but because it sounds (at first) all really unfocused (and in this post-punk days) it's easy to dismiss this as hippie jamming. But if you like Pelt, for instance, and older records like 'Yeti' (aamon dull II) and Live/Dead (grateful dead) then you'll like this.

Julio Desouza, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i loves no neck blues band. i actually got interested in them because i loved the terrible metal/core band david nuss was in when i was in high school. the new nnck cd is brilliant, dammit. most of their stuff is quite good, but the actual song-like-ness of it just blew me away, as did the roomlike production. nice. as for their earlier stuff... helps to have an attention span.

your null fame, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

No-Neck fuckin' rules. They're like if the Godz were actually listenable, or if 'Americana'(i.e. 'Uncut' music) was actually interesting.

dave q, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

On the basis of the one album of theirs I've heard thus far, they are to Acid Mothers Temple what the Alpha Band were to the Grateful Dead.

Marcello Carlin, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Can anyone comment on the artwork? If Nuss's wife Rita Ackermann work is featured...then I will HAVE to check the band.

-, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

don't know if ackerman's work is used, but there was a kind of side-projecty thing called diadial that featured some no neck blues band members. ranged from weird, kind of yoko ono stuff to nnck expansion. one lp of music, one covered with etchings.

that guy with the beard is in this band Suntanama with my friend John Allen, they're into this neo-beard-rock thing that i find creepy. like grossly literal repetition of rock history, after neo-psych comes neo-getting-it-together-in-the-country. they're all into The Band & shit.

duane, Saturday, 26 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i know a couple of... we'll say hangers-on to the whole nnck/suntanama posse and they - SERIOUSLY - talk about how great black oak arkansas is. it's the whole new thrice-removed anti-irony thing that people like the yutzes behind flemish masters think is so neat. "yahoo."

your null fame, Sunday, 27 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Since the Flemish Masters have been mentioned, would this be a good place to ask about SWEET? I mean, guhwah?

David Raposa, Sunday, 27 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Raposa - NNCK haven't played near you, to my knowledge (not that I keep up with that sort of thing these days, but it's hard not to when all those people you linked to are in your backyard and half of them go to your school), but you're right, part of NNCK played the Hampshire tavern under a made up name back in the summer.

whatever you got to say the no neck are here to stay. whoever bought the rev. cd and nothing else comparing 'em to jackie-o and all that is a supersucker to say the least, you're beat, and will get beat by the suntanama who'll sweep up the floor with their sound and sweep your girl off her feet. so check your luggage at the gate and ride the midnight aeroplane, get hooked on a feelin' if you don't think doin' it yrself ain't the best thing to do if you really want to do yrself in...

Steve K, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Early NNCK blows away the new Rev cd - there's a good bit more 'rock' and structure here (Rev cd) (sometimes too much for my taste) as with each new NNCK album, it seems - so there I can see a Jackie-O vague similarity, but still not much. (???) If you're really 'patient' try the a tabu one and a tabu two lps (eps?) - completely ungraspable, the gift that keeps giving

Much of the earlier stuff is still avail in NYC record stores btw

Are any of you in NY and know them (NNCK)? I wanna find about about where/if there is an easter show this year, and also volunteer my roof if one is needed...718-349-8349 will

Picked up two of their dbl cds - 'Letters From The Earth' and 'The Birth of Both Worlds' - secondhand in Reckless/Berwick St a couple of weeks ago - best 'find' I've had in ages. Along with the Revenant alb have been listening to 'em pretty solidly ever since. The Godz comparison is OTM, and I also hear The Fugs and, because of the 'sinister' otherworldly aspect, early Ghost. The real deal - super stoned scary freak out improv jams that will have you phoning round the whole of London in search of further 'enlightenment'...

Andrew L, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

After I posted this I put on the second disc of 'Birth...' and there's this amazing bit on 'Why Is Love Wrong?' where, after 10 mins or so of the usual trancey freaky noodling, they suddenly start to sound just like a Chain Reaction/Basic Channel group, I shit you not.

Andrew L, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

hell yeah, I know exactly what you are talking about on disc 2 - that track rocks (but I don't know this reference to basic channel/whatever)...The 'letters from the earth' 2cd is one of my favortie nnck things ever. this is gonna sound realy cliche, but...once I woke up really stoned while listening to that (it weas on really loud) and it was TERRIFYING! ha ha ...those atavistic, caveman voices...

will, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

the last track on the rev. CD is a killer cut, something ultra super special I think...

c'mon, start a suntanama thread, I dare you...

Okay: I saw 'em once and...oh god help us all.....

No, really, I wasn't into it, but that Whip-or-wil (sp?) song is annoyingly catchy. I can't beleive I still remember it from hearing it just once. If you like NNCK...well, suntanama has nothing in common I think - different universe

correction from earlier: the 2 related eps/lps I referred to are actually both called A Tabo Two - just 2 totally different records, art and all..Why has the nnck abandoned the Drone?

Okay, I'm drunk and don't want to seach the archives. Answer me this: do they still play at the Hint House on a regular basis for whoever wants to show up? I'm making my annual NYC trip this summer, and I think they'd be a very good thing to check out.

the last show there was a couple months ago. Haven't heard about anything coming up, but I'm sure there'll be something. Last thing I saw was Orthodox Easter concert in the park.

dave q, Saturday, 10 May 2003 10:56 (twenty years ago) link

NNCK opened for my band back in 1994 or '95, and were just about the worst thing I've ever heard. Plus they played for, I think, over 2 1/2 hours. Despite what Julio says above, I love Pelt and _Yeti_, but these guys, eewww.

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 10 May 2003 11:00 (twenty years ago) link

heh. dave you have a reply.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 10 May 2003 11:05 (twenty years ago) link

but that was 94/95 duglas. they might have changed quite a bit no? I did chat to hstencil on aim (he sez they can be really up and down: he's seen 'em 3 times).

I love Pelt ('empty bell ringing in the sky' is fantastic stuff) and 'yeti' as well (though I'm thinking that NNCK are quite diff to a lot of that, in fact i was convinced they have some incredible string band in them but that's prob bcz I've been hearing lots from them lately).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 10 May 2003 11:09 (twenty years ago) link

sorry I forgot this was the old thread and miss my prev post (making the one above this look really stupid) (all these NNCK threads have been revived today as well).

oh shit, i wonder if Gage-O is still around these parts, since i definitely played that show with 'im. apparently the audio of that night is killer. even though Bitch Bob (co-owner of 33) played the tape on the radio the next night, he refused to give us dudes a copy.

apparently, Known-Eck are back something fierce.

comment upthread re: '94/'95 - i saw nnck open for charles gayle in '94 and they were amazing. didn't realize who they were at the time.

i've been asking around to see if anybody recorded their set (specifically the first one) opening for Simon Finn. Asked Nu$$ about it and he said he didn't know anyone who recorded it. Stence, you know anybody who did?

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 1 May 2005 16:46 (eighteen years ago) link

i dunno, i can ask around. they didn't open, they headlined. that was an amazing set tho it was too hottt/stinky for me to stay inside for most of it.

No hot-and-stinky hipster-hippie stew today: it's on the roof.

nabiscothingy, Sunday, 1 May 2005 21:48 (eighteen years ago) link

it wasn't the hinthouse that was hot n' stinky, it was the divey mexican restaurant where the show was at.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 1 May 2005 21:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah yeah but I get the sense that hot-and-stinky is kind of par for the course for gatherings of No-Neck afficionados. Hot and stinky and small children running around.

nabiscothingy, Sunday, 1 May 2005 22:04 (eighteen years ago) link

one year passes...
The following function will return the date (on the Gregorian calendar) for Orthodox Easter (Pascha). Note that incorrect results will be returned for years less than 1601 or greater than 2399. This is because the Julian calendar (from which the Easter date is calculated) deviates from the Gregorian by one day for each century-year that is NOT a leap-year, i.e. the century is divisible by 4 but not by 10. (In the old Julian reckoning, EVERY 4th year was a leap-year.)

This algorithm was first proposed by the mathematician/physicist Gauss. Its complexity derives from the fact that the calculation is based on a combination of solar and lunar calendars.

function getOrthodoxEaster($date){
/*
Takes any Gregorian date and returns the Gregorian
date of Orthodox Easter for that year.
*/
$year = date("Y", $date);
$r1 = $year % 19;
$r2 = $year % 4;
$r3 = $year % 7;
$ra = 19 * $r1 + 16;
$r4 = $ra % 30;
$rb = 2 * $r2 + 4 * $r3 + 6 * $r4;
$r5 = $rb % 7;
$rc = $r4 + $r5;
//Orthodox Easter for this year will fall $rc days after April 3
return strtotime("3 April $year + $rc days");
}
