and for that matter, what about the other totally non-musical band that's garnering a lot of attention these days: jackie-o-motherfucker.

the editors of the wire must be snorting meth if they can really read anything into j-o-m's music beside it being bunch of pretentious pot smokers jamming on some half-developed riffs. their music is a cop out. no effort.

same for NNCK. their music is an even worse cop-out. dreadful, miserably amateurish stuff.

Got one track on last months wire CD but also a double LP documenting a live gig on their own label. You can see why Fahey liked them since they have this peculiar take on improvisation and yet they align with this very primitive, undestated sound. They do have a sound of their own though but because it sounds (at first) all really unfocused (and in this post-punk days) it's easy to dismiss this as hippie jamming. But if you like Pelt, for instance, and older records like 'Yeti' (aamon dull II) and Live/Dead (grateful dead) then you'll like this.

i loves no neck blues band. i actually got interested in them because i loved the terrible metal/core band david nuss was in when i was in high school. the new nnck cd is brilliant, dammit. most of their stuff is quite good, but the actual song-like-ness of it just blew me away, as did the roomlike production. nice. as for their earlier stuff... helps to have an attention span.

don't know if ackerman's work is used, but there was a kind of side-projecty thing called diadial that featured some no neck blues band members. ranged from weird, kind of yoko ono stuff to nnck expansion. one lp of music, one covered with etchings.

that guy with the beard is in this band Suntanama with my friend John Allen, they're into this neo-beard-rock thing that i find creepy. like grossly literal repetition of rock history, after neo-psych comes neo-getting-it-together-in-the-country. they're all into The Band & shit.

Raposa - NNCK haven't played near you, to my knowledge (not that I keep up with that sort of thing these days, but it's hard not to when all those people you linked to are in your backyard and half of them go to your school), but you're right, part of NNCK played the Hampshire tavern under a made up name back in the summer.

whatever you got to say the no neck are here to stay. whoever bought the rev. cd and nothing else comparing 'em to jackie-o and all that is a supersucker to say the least, you're beat, and will get beat by the suntanama who'll sweep up the floor with their sound and sweep your girl off her feet. so check your luggage at the gate and ride the midnight aeroplane, get hooked on a feelin' if you don't think doin' it yrself ain't the best thing to do if you really want to do yrself in...

Early NNCK blows away the new Rev cd - there's a good bit more 'rock' and structure here (Rev cd) (sometimes too much for my taste) as with each new NNCK album, it seems - so there I can see a Jackie-O vague similarity, but still not much. (???) If you're really 'patient' try the a tabu one and a tabu two lps (eps?) - completely ungraspable, the gift that keeps giving

Picked up two of their dbl cds - 'Letters From The Earth' and 'The Birth of Both Worlds' - secondhand in Reckless/Berwick St a couple of weeks ago - best 'find' I've had in ages. Along with the Revenant alb have been listening to 'em pretty solidly ever since. The Godz comparison is OTM, and I also hear The Fugs and, because of the 'sinister' otherworldly aspect, early Ghost. The real deal - super stoned scary freak out improv jams that will have you phoning round the whole of London in search of further 'enlightenment'...

After I posted this I put on the second disc of 'Birth...' and there's this amazing bit on 'Why Is Love Wrong?' where, after 10 mins or so of the usual trancey freaky noodling, they suddenly start to sound just like a Chain Reaction/Basic Channel group, I shit you not.

hell yeah, I know exactly what you are talking about on disc 2 - that track rocks (but I don't know this reference to basic channel/whatever)...The 'letters from the earth' 2cd is one of my favortie nnck things ever. this is gonna sound realy cliche, but...once I woke up really stoned while listening to that (it weas on really loud) and it was TERRIFYING! ha ha ...those atavistic, caveman voices...

NNCK opened for my band back in 1994 or '95, and were just about the worst thing I've ever heard. Plus they played for, I think, over 2 1/2 hours. Despite what Julio says above, I love Pelt and _Yeti_, but these guys, eewww.

but that was 94/95 duglas. they might have changed quite a bit no? I did chat to hstencil on aim (he sez they can be really up and down: he's seen 'em 3 times).

I love Pelt ('empty bell ringing in the sky' is fantastic stuff) and 'yeti' as well (though I'm thinking that NNCK are quite diff to a lot of that, in fact i was convinced they have some incredible string band in them but that's prob bcz I've been hearing lots from them lately).

do these guys still play out at all? Pat Murano puts out records on a pretty regular basis (and they're pretty fucking good), but i've been wondering about the band as a whole.
