More than any other band in history of all music (Ramones included) they have a strict formula for song structure that they NEVER deter from, ever.

Wesley Willis. OK, he wasn't a band.

wetmink (wetmink), Sunday, 25 July 2004 05:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Linkin Park have lots of really good BITS of songs, but "In The End" is the only one that's good all the way through, and even then it's genius is better appreciated having not heart if for a while.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 25 July 2004 05:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Don't really like the Postal Service but Linkin Park I like about the same. "Faint" was a great single though. Cool video too.

djdee2005, Sunday, 25 July 2004 05:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Regardless of what you think of Linkin Park (and I have a fairly high opinion of 'em), all must admit that they know how to write a good intro.

Yeah, they're damn formulaic, but Evanescense is even more so.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Sunday, 25 July 2004 06:05 (nineteen years ago) link

rojek, don't listen to these jackals. you sound like you'd be a guy to throw a sweet barbecue or loan yr friends money. that is, if you exist. anyway, the numb video is great.

g--ff (gcannon), Sunday, 25 July 2004 07:50 (nineteen years ago) link

key to me getting into Linkin Park: Amateur!st (I think it was him, anyway) pointing out that the lyrics to "Somewhere I Belong" sound like they were written by a guidance counselor. It's totally true, and it sums up their lyrical appeal so nicely!

You wonderful wastrel, Nickalicious, you grand rascal.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Their songs are catchy. They have good shouty bits. I like how they ponce about in their videos acting all hard with their rubbish tattoos.

Wooden, Sunday, 25 July 2004 10:58 (nineteen years ago) link

"in the end has terrible rapping in it."

interesting sidenote: almost every really serious hip-hop fan i know likes this song.

the only people i personally know who refuse to listen to lp on the grounds of "bad rapping" (which means what exactly?) are corny indie fuxx who don't even like that much hip-hop in the first place.

weird huh?!?!

artiste, Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Nickalicious's post implies that one can be emo and not be doofusy. I find fault in that logic.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Nonsense, it's easy. You don't tell anyone you're emo, you don't dress the part, and you keep your diary private.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:08 (nineteen years ago) link

i love hippity hop.

and for the record, he's just an ackward rapper to listen to with no word play and doesn't add anything to the group and i find him just plain and simple unremarkable. And would you not deny that even limp bizkit had better rapping in their early career?

interesting sidenote: almost every really serious hip-hop fan i know likes this song.

I'm sorry to hear that. My condolences.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:30 (nineteen years ago) link

interesting sidenote: almost every really serious hip-hop fan i know likes this song.

Maybe this is more to do with the production than the rhymes, tho?

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:33 (nineteen years ago) link

But Ned, if a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to hear it, how do we know it makes a sound?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:34 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm actually guessing for production myself.

And to be fair, In the End is probably their best single, but there are way more interesting rock groups in the mainstream in my opinion right now.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:36 (nineteen years ago) link

oh certainly daniel -- the point is people who aren't c.i.fx. don't find the "bad rhyming" a barrier to enjoying a great synthpop song! "i cant like this it has bad rhymes" is only raised as a piece of pseudocriticism by people who hate fun on general principles.

artiste, Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:41 (nineteen years ago) link

His rhyming has the exact cadence of "Ice Ice Baby."

It starts with ooooooone...alright STOP! collaborate and listen!

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:42 (nineteen years ago) link

If I had mash-up skills I would prove this.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:43 (nineteen years ago) link

um, cadence may not be the word I'm looking for.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:43 (nineteen years ago) link

It's funny because there are people who might have assumed Anthony means the Ice Ice Baby comparison as a bad thing.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:46 (nineteen years ago) link

If Mike Shinoda's rhyme was a drug I'd sell it by the gram.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:48 (nineteen years ago) link

And anything less than the Chest is a felony.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:49 (nineteen years ago) link

But Ned, if a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to hear it, how do we know it makes a sound?

EZ. The tree then talks about Wes Anderson films.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Allright, sure but i've still heard better rock songs with rapping in them.

Several really. And really compared to other rock groups with rappers, i wouldn't put Mr.Shinoda very high at all.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:55 (nineteen years ago) link

linkin park are the worst kind of 'nu-metal backwash'.
why the worst, you ask? because they still sell. and the kids eat it up like candy, and not good candy but bad maggot filled candy that eats you instead of you eating it.

LP and all bands that are like them are total trash. i await the 3 yr turn around when they're fans get a little older and start dissing them madly once they discover that there's stuff that doesn't suck quite as badly. LP ARE THE NEXT 311!

(without the cure cover to make them money...)

and BTW- what self-respecting hip-hop type would dare admit (unless completely wasted) that LP have even a shred of worth??!
it's funny, cause, i talked to some DJ's who think that it's lamer than indie/drone rawk.

yr hip-hop experts must be what, 13?

eedd, Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:56 (nineteen years ago) link

so what's the best nu-metal eedd? heh

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Sunday, 25 July 2004 13:05 (nineteen years ago) link

slipknot!

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 25 July 2004 13:08 (nineteen years ago) link

slipknot at least know what they are doing is silly and don't try to make videos of themselves sitting in churches playing pianos, and aren't trying to look cool doing it.

they are stupid and look stupid in a kiss sort of way. and that's an awesome sort of stupid. i guess.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Sunday, 25 July 2004 13:16 (nineteen years ago) link

the best nu-metal?

that's an oxymoron, pally.

no such thing has, nor will it, ever really exist.

pardon my shit spelling, the coffee is taking hold...

eedd, Sunday, 25 July 2004 13:35 (nineteen years ago) link

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 July 2004 13:44 (nineteen years ago) link

the first two to four seconds of every Linkin Park song are great; they tend to start with very pleasant-sounding, crackly minor-key loops. Then the actual music kicks in, and joseph switches the channel.

I disagree completely. Not only the rapping, but both of their pre-pubescent whinning. Shit, if they actually did drop the "I'm so angry" schtick and made a song that was just fun and synth pop, I'd love it.

David Allen (David Allen), Sunday, 25 July 2004 15:46 (nineteen years ago) link

And the rapping reminds me of the raps they used to have done by anonymous guys on big dance hits in the early 90s

David Allen (David Allen), Sunday, 25 July 2004 15:47 (nineteen years ago) link

well, there IS a bit of a double standard at work, since LP's skills per se (to me, at least) is not perceptibly worse than the Beastie Boys'. It's the rapper basically trading fours with a sub-Gahan whiner that tends to get to us.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 25 July 2004 15:55 (nineteen years ago) link

ARE worse. pardon.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 25 July 2004 15:55 (nineteen years ago) link

"Faint" is a great single. The rest of their stuff is just Savage Garden dressed up with loops, raps, and crunchy guitars.

I have a feeling that in two years' time it will be painfully uncool - verboten, even - to write the kind of faux-angsty lyrics that groups like Linkin Park and Evanesence (sp?) specialize in.

this is a bad thing?

Girls are all over the world
they hope and pray and die for men
Like me cause I'm the one
begotten son that breaks the mold
Get a look at male epitome
Style has never seen
That makes you want to grab and hold
and squeeze real tight
Who's gonna be the one to save
you from yourself
When you wanna take a bite
please oh baby please
You beg you want to stay
You got to get some caught
Up in the charm that I laid on thick
And now there's nowhere
to run
just another fish to fit the
worm on the hook of my line
Yeah I keep many females
longing for a chance to win my heart
with S-E-X and plenty

Now I wish Linkin Park would add that chick who did the background vocals for "Everybody Dance Now" to their lineup and they would be thegreatest band on earth.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 25 July 2004 21:19 (nineteen years ago) link

oh, all nu-metal is whiney and silly, but it's possible to get around. Linkin Park however, they are just not lyricly very good either from Chester as every song is the same. They need to switch it up.

Also, i like how in their album sleeve on the inside it says "Linkin Park Wears..." followed by a list of several clothing brands. heh.

Now I wish Linkin Park would add that chick who did the background vocals for "Everybody Dance Now" to their lineup and they would be thegreatest band on earth.

AGREED.

thirteen years pass...

Also a good reason to set aside prejudice and rediscover. I’ve been listening to plenty of linkin park in the last 6 months and kicking myself for not having done so earlier
