I missed the earlier seventies hits when growing up, so I only got to hear them in retrospect -- but both songs are indeed mighty fine, the latter is if I remember a tribute to the underrated Sara Allen, who collaborated with them both on many songs and who passed away some years back (or so I thought, but I keep reading it was her sister and fellow H/O collaborator Janna Allen?).
"I Can't Go For That" is infectious and magical.
Uh, someone DID mention De La Soul by now, yeah?

Me, I'm fairly indifferent to H&O. "Sara Smile" I remember as pretty great, tho I've not heard it in 20+ years! "Kiss On My List" and "You Make My Dreams" are probably my favourites. I don't think I can ever again stomach "I Can't Go For That", just 'cause I'm sick to fucking death of that goddamn Simply Red song that I'm forced to endure at the office at least twice a week. (I hate it.)(I hate Simply Red!) But I never cared much for it originally anyways - partly because the phrase "No can do" always infuriated me! (Dunno why.)
Two unanswerable questions: 1. How is it that I've never heard "Family Man" despite remembering all their other early '80s hits? And 2. When and why did they add the "Daryl" and "John" to their bandname? Egotism? A silly decision if you ask me: "Hall And Oates" rolls off the tongue so much more easily. (But at least "Daryl Hall And John Oates" is still much better [in every way] than "England Dan and John Ford Coley"!)

More info:
Daryl Hall has sued his longtime music partner John Oates, arguing that his plan to sell off his share of a joint venture would violate the terms of a business agreement the Hall & Oates duo had forged.
The move quickly prompted a judge to temporarily block the sale while legal proceedings and a previously initiated arbitration continue.
A Nashville chancery court judge issued the temporary restraining order on Nov. 16, writing that Oates and others involved in his trust can't move to close the sale of their share of Whole Oats Enterprises LLP to Primary Wave IP Investment Management LLC until an arbitrator in a separately filed case weighs in on the deal, or until the judge's order expires — typically within 15 days, unless a judge extends the deadline.

this seems much more likely and it's not a restraining order as reported, it's an injuncture which is a totally different thing, and also seems like a legitimate thing for Hall to be not ok with

Daryl Hall filed a sharply worded sworn statement Wednesday explaining why he’s suing music partner John Oates over an alleged breach of their business partnership, and sadly he does not indulge us by incorporating his song titles into his filing.

Also this is the first time I've heard Oates address the following:
(Oates) claimed Hall is the one who went rogue, alleging Hall “has consistently and publicly been adamant about being perceived as an individual rather than as part of a duo or group.” He also alleged Hall has “insisted” on the group being known as “Daryl Hall and John Oates,” rather than the more commonly known “Hall & Oates.”

xp Is it more common for one partner to simply sell out to the other partner? That seemed to be the case with the Band (everyone selling their share of the publishing to Robertson) and others (like Denny Laine selling his shares of his Wings co-writes to McCartney). Also, those particularly cases went on to prove Hall's point - never sell your publishing unless you're 80 and retiring.

I can't say the idea of a Broadway musical appeals to me. A brief excerpt:
Garrett and D’Arienzo also caught wind of the unusual dynamic between Hall and Oates. Both saw the group live a few times during their mutual projects and came away disenchanted. “They didn’t look at each other and never even talked to each other,” Garrett recalls. “I don’t think the audience noticed or cared. But I could not understand it.” Although he says Hall and Oates both showed up for a workshop reading of he and Taylor’s attempted musical, Garrett could also sense the tension between the two. “They would speak individually and not together,” he says, “and not confer with each other.”
D’Arienzo felt the same during his few interactions with them and at the concerts he attended. “I saw their show three times, and it was great,” he says. “They played amazing. But they didn’t seem like they were having fun onstage. It definitely felt like a business relationship.”
In another telling moment, D’Arienzo says he when he submitted his script, members of their team expressed enthusiasm — including half of the duo. “I remember getting a message from John Oates that was, ‘I love this so much, but I’m not going to say anything, because if I say I love it, Daryl will hate it.’”
