"Summerhead" by the Cocteau Twins is a song that, for some reason, I'd come to associate with a period of my life when I reconciled with a friend who'd I'd had a very bitter falling out with (we worked together, then we started dating, however briefly, then she wanted us to go back to being "friends," which never works,...and then we became rather acrimoniously estranged and didn't really speak for about a year and a half.) Eventually, we drifted back together and mended fences in a very bittersweet turn of events, but then rather suddenly she moved away (to the West coast)....which, practically speaking, was probably for the best....but it left me rather heartbroken at the time. In any event, this album had recently come out, and I'd been playing it death, and there's something about Liz Fraser's melancholy swoon on this track that sounds like a parliament of archangels, especially on the chorus (and who in blazes knows what the lyrics are anyway?). The whole saga is ancient history, and she and I have both totally moved on, but this song still can puncture a whole in my sternum, grip me roughly by the ventricles and swell up with the water works if the mood is right.

Now My Heart Is Full by Morrissey was the last song I cried to, and that's going on two years ago now, but at the time the sentiment in the title was entirely appropriate because I'd just been on the wrong end of a break-up.

Claudia Cardinale's theme from 'Once Upon A Time In The West' (remember the scene where she arrives to the city by train, she stops and talks to the station manager and then the camera lifts over the roof, to show her walking down the grimy main street?). It think it is simply called 'Once Upon A Time In The West'. Oh man, this is Ennio Morricone at the top of his abilities and I am touched every time I hear it, even though it is really kind of semi-cheesy, I guess. But aren't soundtracks allowed to be?

read X-Ray and you will find out the reason why you should cry every time you hear that song (and then even later period material like "come dancing" and "don't forget to dance" will suddenly make a whole lot of sense/bring you to your knees).

Its done it.

I was looking out on my roof last night
Woken up from a dream
Saw a typhoon coming in close
Bringing the clouds down to the sea
Making the world look gray and alone
Taking all light from my view
Keeping everyone in
Keeping me here with you

Around you now
I can't sleep no more, baby
Around you now
Don't wanna leave ya

Woken up from a dream last night
Somewhere lost in war
Couldn't feel my feet or hands
Didn't feel right anymore
Knew there I'd die alone
With no one to reach to
Then an angel came down
And brought me back to you

I'd rather leave this world forever, baby
Then let life go the way it's going

Watching an old fight film last night
Ray Mancini and Duk Koo Kim
The boy from Seoul was hanging on good
But the pounding it took to him
There in the square he laid alone
Without face; without crown
And the angels who looked upon
They never came down

You never know what day is gonna pick you, baby
Out of the air; out of nowhere

Oh, come to me once more my love
Show me love I've never known
Oh, come to me once more my love
Show me love I've never known
Come to me once more my love
Show me love I've never known
Come to me once more my love
Show me love I've never known

Sing to me once more my love
Words from your younger years
Sing to me once more my love
Words from your younger years
Come to me once more my love

On minidisc, I have a live version of Neutral Milk Hotel's "Engine" from a '98 Athens New Years show...really slow and quiet, with bits of saw and horn mixed in. It's the ultimate comfort song for me, anyway. I was clomping across campus last week after a particularly heinous day -- it was cold and rainy in Minneapolis -- and I heard that song...and I'm sure I welled up (just a little).

the last time i really let loose though was right after my heart was broken, about 18 months ago, "no one will ever love you" by the magnetic fields just broke me down

Earlier on this year "We're All Alone" by Rita Coolidge came on the radio driving home late at night from a gig. A song I'd completely forgotten about until that moment....and it seemed like every line in the song, every note, every sound, was there simply to make me cry. So I did.

"Close the window, calm the light, and it will be alright, no need to bother now, let it out, let it all begin, owe it to the wind my love."

In July I came home from a friend's funeral and listened to "Missing You" by Puff Daddy, et. al. It was a fairly unserious gesture, but the thought of how much it would have made her laugh and the reality of the lyrics made me shed a tear or two.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 19:45 (twenty years ago) link

Cornelius' 'Rock/96', the climax of 69/96, seems to get me mildly emotional each time and I dunno why. I guess there was a heatbreak point in 'I Am The Walrus' he managed to locate when he wrote the song. Best of all, I only understand 4 lines of the song (cause they're in English, duh).

Because of the title and Beatles appropriation, I read the song as a perspective/betterment on Oasis and Britpop.

funny, i can recall a few, perhaps many times i cried to music, but i don't remember the songs. there is one song though that is absolutely impossible for me to listen to without breaking apart, i don't even like R.E.M., but the song "you are the everything" to me is about a young runaway boy i madly fell for, summer 91. tragedy stroke and he is no more but he still is everything and i can't bear even a single note of this song, though i don't even recall why i associated it to him in the first place.

oh and the first time i heard that silly "silent night/news report" thing by simon & garfunkel i fell to the floor and wept for a little hour. "last" time i wept was probably to cheree by suicide but it was late and tipsy.
