I still kind of like them. ESOJ is correct about Enigks solo album, what a piece of shit. He also looked like an out of work porn star during that period. When I saw them three years ago people threw flowers on the stage at him like he was Morrissey.

i've softened to the rest of the Diary album but "Seven" is still far and away their best moment..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 22:36 (twenty years ago) link

I like the first two records ok - nostalgia. my hometown punk scene went bananas for them circa 2nd album, they all started looking for religious shit in the lyrics, etc. Wild

Squirrel Police is right -- I pulled out How It Feels... yesterday for nostalgia's sake, and damn if it doesn't hold up. It's got a weird, super-depressing, goth/prog/metal vibe that makes it decidedly non-punk. It's a very "Seattle"-sounding record, if that makes any sense. Yeah, the drumming gets a little oppressive, and Enigk's lyrics are sometimes cringeworthy, but the songwriting, pacing, and sense of dynamics and flow is impeccable.

I'm going to have to stand up for Enigk's solo album, I think it's gorgeous, I'm really surprised people don't like it. I much prefer it to any SDRE album (and I really only like the first one and How It Feels) and wish he'd do another one like this. The tunes just cement themselves into my head for a week everytime I listen to it.

I really disliked the one album I had of theirs, but I'm not sure what I'd think now

uh (eetface), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I really like How It Feels..too. I even bought the live album cuz i like those songs so much. I chickened out of buying the last album when i heard it wasn't as good. I'd probably like it though. I've never heard the earlier albums.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:14 (nineteen years ago) link

no, it wasn't very good, the songs were a lot shorter and radio-friendly and it lost a lot of the pretentious grandeur of How It Feels. I hated it.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, the pretentiousness is definitely what I love about that one album. I like when bands go for broke like that.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:19 (nineteen years ago) link

the next album commited the unforgivable sin of just being boring. I love the bombast of How It Feels.

What about the Fire Theft? The relative silence about that album from the usual places makes me think it must have sucked.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:36 (nineteen years ago) link

The first record never did anything for me. I liked the third a lot when it came out, but my brother permanently borrowed it so I haven't heard it in a while. LP2, the one no one likes, has always been my favorite, and I still listen to it occasionally. It may be my favorite in part because there's no lyric sheet so you can imagine the words aren't completely banal and/or too strident, but it's also got a nice band-live-in-a-room feel and easily the weirdest songs they ever wrote.

charlie va (charlie va), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Has anyone seen the movie called United States of Leland? Not sure what the movie is like, but Enigk did two new songs for the movie. I heard he was doing a full soundtrack, but IMDB.com only lists two Enigk songs in the movie.
And I agree with you, Kyle, the solo album is really great.

"heaven" off the fire theft record is remarkable

one year passes...

The other night I got a nostalgic urge to listen to SDRE's second album, because I was nuts about them in high school and beyond. I listened to it all the way through, but felt distinctly underwhelmed. Maybe one song on it sort of did anything for me. I will reserve judgement until I re-listen to the first one. But agreed that 'seven' is fucking awesome.

similar nostalgic urge last week and came up with different results. The 2nd album (always my favorite of the two--never bothered with anything post-breakup) holds up for me. It's so oppressive and gloomy. I also noticed (maybe for the first time) how good the drumming is. No wonder Grohl tapped that guy to play in Foo Fighters.

Pushed my luck and revisited Diary, which, as stated many times upthread, starts out strong, but really fizzles off after that. Still, good "sound" on these records. They're very of-their-time, but in a good way.

Wimmels, Saturday, 22 October 2016 17:51 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, William Goldsmith is such an incredible drummer, especially on that second record (which is still one of my favorite records).

Post-breakup, still think How It Feels is brilliant, but that's where I get off the boat.

cwkiii, Saturday, 22 October 2016 18:27 (seven years ago) link

I guess I should hear that one, a lot of people seem to like it. I felt like I'd sorta 'outgrown' them at the time or something, they just weren't at all on my radar by that point

Wimmels, Saturday, 22 October 2016 19:57 (seven years ago) link

It's a totally different vibe from the first two but it's a very very good record.

cwkiii, Saturday, 22 October 2016 22:22 (seven years ago) link

I never really listened to this band, but this was a pretty good/intense interview about SDRE and being miserable in Foo Fighters.

In The Trap Set interview - which is a good listen - he is kinda pissy about Grohl, with good reason imho and interestingly very direct about how Dan Hoerner is apparently a terrible person, also a lot of his family seem to have had battles with alcohol with tragic results, so perhaps he's some kind of grudgeful drunk poster.

one day in the late 90s i was minding my own business reading a SDRE interview, and then william goldsmith starts describing his approach to playing drums, and that with every snare hit he's trying to "crack the earth" so that his dead sister might one day rise up through it... i swear that quote flashes thru my mind monthly

ufo, Monday, 24 January 2022 21:52 (two years ago) link

the lost album goldsmith was rambling about years ago was just their unfinished attempt at recording a new album after the 2009 reunion, right? it was pretty well-established that they'd written new material & tried to record it after the reunion tour but the sessions didn't end up going anywhere for whatever reason?

ufo, Monday, 24 January 2022 21:56 (two years ago) link

Wow, after hearing Will Goldsmith talk about Dan Hoerner on that Trap Set podcast a few years back, I figured they were done forever.

I think he may have also talked about the "lost" album in that interview, too? iirc, it was just the sessions that "Lipton Witch" came from; I think they had a few other half-finished songs before they split again.

cwkiii, Wednesday, 26 January 2022 19:41 (two years ago) link

i didn't become a fan of this band until How It Feels which I still rank very highly; I saw them on tour for the Rising Tide and thought it was great, so I'll likely check this out.

I remember the 15th anniversary show at Metro in Chicago - one of the band member's wives was pregnant and it was the first time Metro had a no smoking policy for a show. My how time's change.

BlackIronPrison, Tuesday, 23 January 2024 19:42 (two months ago) link

the circumstances of this re-recording are a little weird, not sure how i feel about this happening when nate mendel isn’t currently in the band (whatever interpersonal and professional conflicts that required them to reunite again without him notwithstanding, i don’t pretend to know about these things, glad they’re touring it’s awesome) and god knows the reason i love diary and LP2 is the particular dynamic of these guys playing together, maybe the first time i heard a non-jazz record where i felt like a whole world was being opened up just through interplay, a feeling i think is a little lost on the records they made when they first reunited without mendel, even though both of those records are insanely good

but also that studio clip sounds dope, and one of the flaws-that-is-a-feature of diary is how ruined his voice is from the tour they did right before recording it, and i’m interested in how he’ll approach it with a not-ruined voice. notice he’s taking a lower register in the verses which admittedly sounded painful to sing on the og
