Last night I saw a poster for Cats w/ the tagline: "Even magical things come to an end". Which surely belongs on Martin's rub slogan thread.

Andrew L, Sunday, 12 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes I saw it and loved it.

the pinefox, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I saw a clip of it the other day. The women didn't look at all like cats, which put me off a bit.

N., Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Most important of all, what will this mean to Faber, which in all likelihood would no longer exist without the monies it generated for them. this is true.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wonder if anyone ever made a porn spoof of it

Yeah, it was called SCAT heh.

Sam, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah but Alan it's not closing all over the world is it?

N., Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I saw it years ago and probably loved it. I cannot remember now, though it would've been better on roller skates.

However it did bring back the even earlier childhood trauma of my crazed cat-loving grandpa who would beckon me aside, recite long chunks of Bustopher Jones / Skimbleshanks / The Naming of Cats and then say 'go and tell Daddy that', at which point I would run off and interrupt my dad mid-shave in order to recite whatever I could remember at him. If only I had known the songs first this would have been much easier.

Emma, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh right. i'm not really keeping tabs on Cats The Musical. But is it just the beginning of the end -- could we soon be in a Cats free world? And why are there no really grossly enormous cats involved. that would be hilarious. imagine. a really huge cat. go on.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

They should make a version with animatronic cats. Or animated cats - just like the Aristocats. Or even better, the Aristocats Down Under (you know, the bit even the cats don't like).

Pete, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, I think Emma was right first time with her rollerskating cats. In saris, maybe.

N., Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

ALANG T i am imagining the huge cat and giggling. however DON'T get no funny ideas about posting a certain picture...

katie, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

They should make a version with cats in massive pint glasses. You know, those massive pint glasses?

Ronan, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Cats in saris = The Princess in Willy Fogg And His 80 Days Around The World.

WHich reminds me of a Jaffa Cake Box question.

Pete, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Rollerskating in a sari = recipe for disaster.

Emma, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

McCavity used to scare the bejeezus out of me. I went to see it when I was 8 but was concerned about the appearance of the 'mystery cat' virtually the whole way through. His evil feline laugh chilled me to the bone.

Jonnie, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Cor speaking of huge pint glasses I saw a GIANT CAN of bitter the other day I think it must haf been at least a FATHOM in size. I did not buy it although I did buy a FRAY BENTOS STEAK AND KIDNEY PUDDING ph34r m3!!!!!

Sarah, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

SOunds like a Party FOur - or even better - a Party Seven to me.

Pete, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've alwyas been vaguely bothered about Party Sevens. In particular: why the seven? Is there some numerogical danger associated with it being eight pints ie a whole gallon?

RickyT, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I see those giant giant bottles of Grolsch every week at the local off licence and think about how fun it would be to buy one. It all seems so German though.

Ronan, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

How big are these bottles?

RickyT, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Cor wot are these RickyT/pTee? Ronan the HUGE CANGS are even MORE impressive than the big bottles of beer in the offie - which I am sure are ripoffs but haven't been bothered to work out if they are or not.

Sarah, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I remember one Halloween about 2 years ago two of my friends thought they were very kool and bought the ten pint mini kegs. We got to the party we were going to and they both managed to fuck up opening them and drank a frothy mixture of oxygen and beer. It tasted like licking a 2p coin.

The bottles look fantastic as I like the idea of trying to drink directly from one. I'd say they're about 8 or 10 pints. The French have it right with those litre mini barrels of Kronenberg that you stick the spout on to drink. They cost 8 francs aswell in OLD money.

Ronan, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Blimey, them's big bottles there Ronan.

RickyT, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

A Party Seven is a big tin of beer containing 7 pints. I have never supped from one my self but according to parents who experienced them in the seventies they are evil and the work of satan.

RickyT, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I NEED AND MUST FIND ONE!!! This one woulda only been a party four. Ronan I take it back those GIANT BOTTLES look BRILLIANT and you must buy one - and get someone to take a photo of you drinking from it!! Wow!!! Giant beer!! But Grolsch bah--.

Sarah, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Indeed, I remember one in our kitchen as a youth. Ruddles County I believe. You needed to tap into it as well, at whichpoint - as ROnan describes - the whole thing would explode and often the interior of the can had rusted too.

Pete, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like Grolsch. It certainly beats 4 for 5 euro Bavaria Crown (brewed in Holland hmmm). Ugh.

Ronan, Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Macavity breaks the laws of gravity = Science is his BITCH!!

N., Monday, 13 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I honestly don't know who James Corden is, so I kept thinking people in chat were saying "James Gordon" like the cop in Gotham/Batman and I was very confused, because it was CATS! not BATS!

My wife started this last night and made it ... not far before turning it off and saying it was even worse than she expected. I asked her what she expected, and she said, I dunno, but I didn't expect it to be *that* bad. And I asked, what, the literally universal derision and it bombing hard with a vengeance wasn't hint enough?

a half dozen of us "celebrated" the beginning of covid lockdown by watching this movie together the night before last in a video chatroom

― sarahell, Wednesday, March 18, 2020 11:49 AM (three weeks ago) bookmarkflaglink

I did this roughly at the same time but most of the people left way before the film finished.

just a ghastly looking thing. absolutely awful. I don't know the musical but the musical is definitely part of the problem here, there's not many tunes (I can really only remember the refrain from the magical mr mistoffelees song and the chorus of memory) and the story and book is just sort of bizarre. Jason de rulo is fine but the most of the cast is awful special mentions to rebel Wilson, James Corden, Idris, and Taylor Swift doing "sexy"

I went to an Alamo rowdy screening which was mostly a fun crowd with one or two people who thought they were Tom Servo. Movie is fully insane nonsense and still like 30 minutes too long.

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 19:01 (four years ago) link

I had little to no knowledge of the source material, but like 80% of the film is like "Let's introduce a cat so we have an excuse to sing a song about that particular cat.

That may be what the play is about too, I don't know for sure!

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 19:03 (four years ago) link

“We paused it,” the source said. “We went to call our supervisor, and we’re like, ‘There’s a fucking asshole in there! There’s buttholes!’
