Wisdom teeth, having them out?

guyssss i'm not excited. it's scheduled for feb 2.

the BIG question: do i pay $400 for them to me to sleep? i've been told i don't need to go under. i feel like i've been asking everyone i know this question, so if i've already posted it elsewhere, forgive me. SO looking forward to feb 3.

I was put out and had a great wisdom teeth extraction experience. My husband was awake and says that his stomach still turns when he thinks about the noises of the surgery.

but can you ask your husband if it like, hurt? i mean, i think i can deal with some noise if it saves me that much $$$. but i can't deal with pain in my mouth.

I've had all four out on four separate occasions, always waited until they hurt (dentist wasn't sure they were going to cause trouble and we decided to just wait and see) - all local anesthetic.

It doesn't hurt more than the kind of regular tooth extraction you get as a kid when your milk teeth won't fall out by themselves. Afterwards, when it all wakes up, you'll have some soreness and you'll want to hold some ice against your cheek for a couple of hours, maybe a slightly annoying night, but after a couple of days you'll think "was that all? Have i been nervous for weeks for this?"

ramzi i basically felt this exact way and i was pretty adamant about going under except my moms forced me to do it awake and it really doesn't hurt. it just feels.... weird. the most pain you'll feel is when they stick the needle in your tongue and gums to numb them. otherwise you just feel lots of pressure, like the dentist is trying to shove the tooth out through your mouth or something. i wouldn't describe it as pain tho.

the worst part for me wasn't the sounds as much as the sounds happening after the dentist would announce what he was going to do. "okay, the tooth won't come out. so now i'm going to break it." *crack* it was just weird but im squeamish with that stuff so if you have the stomach for it it will be no sweat

in summation it isn't worth $400

I think you asked this before, and I talked about how I had the cheapest wisdom-teeth extraction possible.

If the teeth are normal and not impacted and not problematic, there is no reason you should need to go under: couple shots of novocaine, a few slices around the tooth with a scalpel, and they get pried out with a tool you could probably buy at Ace Hardware. It's not a complicated procedure unless something complicated is happening with the tooth.

I got this done in 10 minutes and walked home with some gauze and a mouthful of blood, and I'm a total wimp.

I was told I needed to be put under to have all 4 out. Otherwise they'd have to do it in 2 sessions.

So I was out for 2 hours, woke up, didn't feel too bad. It's now a week later and I feel pretty much normal. just don't use straws and you'll be fine

i think i'm supposed to get three out this summer. i'm going to ignore it all and hope my mom/the dentists dont remember :/

i was told when i was 12 that i wouldnt have to get mine out, either b/c i didnt have them or they weren't going to come in. now, wtf is this. argh, i hate getting teeth pulled

it's not that bad! also your mom will do these things:

• bring drugs to your bed
• bring ice cream to your bed
• not make snide comments about you sleeping for 12 hours

xpost: checked with husband, he said there was no pain during the procedure itself, just stomach-turning grinding and crunching. He had no impacted teeth. I had two impactions, was put under, woke up late and had a great, stoned weekend! Another advantage of the IV sedation is that you can also get IV pain meds before you wake up, so you don't have to wait to stop bleeding to take your vicodin. I think whether or not yr teeth are impacted should make your decision.

Definitely get the IV! If you do, it's a breeze of an operation with a few days of mild aching/drowsy recovery during which you'll watch movies you won't remember, and eat chicken & stars soup you can't taste.

Mine were horribly impacted and I was in danger of nerve damage. Everything turned out just fine.

ok. so the surgeon convinced me to get the IV, cuz the tooth was impacted or whatever. and it was fine! the most pain inflicted was on my wallet :/

the IV did make me feel kind of queasy afterward, but it might've been cuz i hadn't eaten all day. all in all, not bad. that is, until i have to go back to get TWO MORE out! i didn't even know i had them.

it's not that bad! also your mom will do these things:

bring drugs to your bed

also if youre into this sort of thing there is a good chance girls will come to your bed and fawn over you

my bottom two were impacted (not terribly, I imagine) and my top 2 weren't, but my mother also didn't want me go to under so they just used local. it certainly wasn't pleasant but it wasn't the horrible experience lots of you think it would have been.

the biggest pain is maintenance, cleaning out the openings with hydrogen peroxide, obsessively tonging the stitches, not being able to eat everything you want, etc.

i wasn't told to clean anything out! i mean, i know i'm supposed to gargle with saltwater/baking soda after meals or whatever.

they gave me a plastic syringe, and i had to fill it with one part water and one part hydrogen peroxide and apply it directly to the openings just to clean them out.

wow. they did not do that for me. wtf.

Does hydrogen peroxide taste bad?

the syringe is handy so that you don't taste it; since the tip of the syringe is curved you can just flush out the empty pockets, and then spit and rinse. not difficult or painful, just annoying since you have to be pretty conscientious about it.

I'm having one removed tomorrow. I hadn't thought bout it, but it's hitting me now. Just one. What to expect afterwards? Is it true I have to soft food and avoid wine for 24 hours?!

Yup and no straws either. Because as is well known you always drink your wine with a straw.

Yeaaaaah....about that. I'm having doubts after several survivors here at work wondered why "at your age" you're only having one out.

its probably more than 24 hours, for me it was like 2 weeks before I touched a potato chip

I had my first two out when I was 18 and the other two a year or so later. First time they had gotten abscessed and impacted both and it was the worst pain I have ever felt period after the surgery. My head swole up like a pumpkin. Like so much pain it was a bit hallucinogenic at times as you could not focus on anything except this pain pulsating at the beat of your heart. It was a hellish couple of days. When they took out the other side, they were not infected and while it hurt like hades, it was not the torture like the first time.

I probably said something on another thread as linked above, but I had all four of mine out when I was 28 -- three had come in fully, one partially but none impacted, and I was feeling okay enough join friends for brunch two days later. So yay for that.

Had 4 out at 21. They made me really high and i went home and had spaghetti. Nice day

I didn't go to a dentist for 10 years and then had to have two impacted wisdom teeth removed in hospital under general anesthetic. Both on the bottom set. I never got any wisdom teeth on the top set.

Dentists these days avoid removing teeth if they can. I've got a back tooth that's more a less a thin shell of a tooth around a filling, or would be if the filling didn't keep falling out. Last time the dentist decided to not bother re-doing the filling, and I asked him if he could take the tooth out (it's not much use as a tooth either with a filling or without) and he refused.

i had all four taken out when i was younger. two were impacted.

i would say skip the vicodin. medicinally, it doesn't do what you want it to do (it relaxes you, and it's not a pain reliever or fever reducer). take tylenol and eat something before taking it.

i do remember it being really painful after surgery (i was under general anesthesia), but the good thing is that it's a dull pain, which is more bearable than sharp/acute pain.

i ate mash potatoes, stews, and soups for about two weeks. i took tylenol every 5 hours for 3 or 4 days, i believe

you'll be okay. it is a bit strange that you're only getting one out and much later in life, but it depends on whether they are impacted and whether your mouth has room for all of them

since it'll just be the one, you may be able to eat solids with the other side of your mouth, but you may still get some soreness in your jaw. definitely consult your orthodontist (i am not a fan of getting non-orthodontists to remove wisdom teeth)

yeah the Vicodin is total overkill. mine was a dull pain but nothing I needed meds for. took one anyway, laid down and slipped inside my own head for a couple hours (10 minutes), it was a weird experience and I didn't feel too good the next day.

i too basically ate nothing but soup & Spaghetti-Os for 2 weeks. probably could've switched to real food after like 4-5 days but I was so afraid of getting dry socketed...everyone I know who's experienced that said the pain was excruciating. at one point one of the stiches came loose and I was really afraid it was gonna pull the scab out but I think it healed like 3 days prior, lol

Is it an upper or lower wisdom tooth? I think the upper ones generally go more easily, more like having a normal tooth pulled.

I'm a bit shocked tbh that the soft food diet goes on this long.

I got one upper tooth pulled a few years ago and it was nbd, went very quickly, I never took the vicodin and I think I just had to eat carefully and avoid straws for a few days. But it had already come part of the way in so it was easy for them to pull. I think it really depends on where the tooth is.

I had all four taken out a week ago, and it was a lot less of an ordeal than I imagined. (Well, one was simply chopped off at the top, since the root was too near a nerve.) I’d heard all sorts of my horror stories from my family but they had it done at least a decade ago; apparently, dental tech has progressed enough it’s not such a big a deal, even if the orthodontist kept commenting how the risks were greater for someone near 40 like me. I went under for the procedure and while there has definitely been some ache and soreness, there’s been little real pain. Definitely not necessary to take a week off like I’d read. I barely touched the hydrocodone, mostly stuck with the heavy ibuprofen. I’m paranoid enough that I too am sticking with a soft or liquid diet longer than probably necessary. If anything, it’s been rougher not having caffeine or grass for a week...

I had a lower one out a few years ago, don't remember much about pain but the hole developed some kind of weird suction power, and for a while afterwards would suck in strands of spaghetti that I'd have to wrestle out again with my fingers. Not great in restaurants. Watch out for stray grains of rice too.
