I was just saying yesterday how this looks like the peak of the genre dance movies (that Jessica Alba one, that Julia Stiles one) that have been springing up of late. Not gonna waste 10 bucks to laugh at it in the theater but will definitely look forward to seeing it on cable.

Oh, I'd LOVE to see this in the theater, but apparently The Butterfly Effect is being deemed one of the worst movies of all time, so it's a tough decision I have to make this weekend.

That is the first movie I went to unaccompanied by an adult!

This is such a charming and wonderful sentence.

Anyone notice the impossible moves they do in the commercial? Or maybe I've just never seen anyone do them; like the guy that slides straight forward across the floor on his forehead with his feet straight up in the air, what's that!?

I turned down reviewing this so I could do The Big Bounce

VERY BAD MISTAKE

jesus, what the fuck was I thinking!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:49 (twenty years ago) link

I want to see The Big Bounce too!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 29 January 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago) link

it kinda sucks. it's a really, really weird movie--it affects this tone that's so light and breezy the movie just floats away. for a movie involving heists & femmes fatales there's absolutely NO tension, no conflict, no... nothing! the reveals at the end are just bewildering. really weird movie.

Anticipating "You Got Served" = "Are You Being Served?"

I hate to think of the miss Slocombe's pussy gags we'd get in 2004

A hilarity from this review:

"You Got Served" (the title is street talk for "you have been defeated and thoroughly humiliated")

Yeah, thanks.

This movie looks great. Better than 'Drumline' if that's even possible!

It isn't!

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 1 February 2004 04:32 (twenty years ago) link

Details?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 February 2004 04:36 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, I haven't seen it Ned, I'm just saying it's not possible for it to be better than Drumline.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 1 February 2004 04:39 (twenty years ago) link

I think every review ever has to be obligated to inform clueless old folx what the title means.

There had better be some motherfuckin' 808-bangin' electro traxxx on the soundtrack

As far as "Butterfly Effect" goes, both the name and the appearance of Ethan Suplee -- more accurately, the juxtaposition thereof -- are oddly compelling in a holding-in-laughter kinda way.

my understanding is that the breakdancing is only intermittant so i'm waiting for dollar theater.

no way this touches drumline. dallas austin is working on another movie called jellybeans, it's about roller disco. my breath is bated.

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 1 February 2004 07:40 (twenty years ago) link

god seeing breakin 2: electric boogaloo at the old dollar theater on ben hill in east point still ranks high on my 'pop culture as surrogate parent/sibling/lover' list

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 1 February 2004 08:23 (twenty years ago) link

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 1 February 2004 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Saturday, 12 June 2004 14:33 (nineteen years ago) link

This and Drumline never made it to the UK, I'm sure. Which is a shame, it's stuff like this that inspires me to dance.

Haha.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 June 2004 16:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Drumline kicked so much ass. Like Any Given Sunday, but with drums.
