Mark! Yo! Thought I would dip my toe in the ILX pool.

Miss Marianna, Monday, 8 December 2003 15:12 (twenty years ago) link

My mom sees dead people. She's always claimed to have various psychic powers. For a while in high school, I have believed her. Then I decided at some point to just sort of go along with it but not bother suggesting she could be mistaken (this only leads to arguments that I don't love her, don't believe her, etc.). She is very much a fan of John Edwards and other psychic/ new agey type things and I have always thought that the more she reads about it, the more she convinces herself...

Anyway, she just sent an email to my dad and sisters and I claiming that she was told by an angel or something in a dream that my Grandmother would die the day before. She asked said mystical being if she could share this information with my sisters and I and they said no. So, instead she only told my youngest sister that she had had a very amazing, detailed spiritual dream but couldn't tell her what it was about. Now she's saying, Remember when I told you that? It was the dream foretelling of mom's death!

But also, I should add that my mom mentions having extremely detailed spiritual dreams at least once a week.

It would be much easier to ignore except this time it involves my Grandmother.

Sorry, not so light a topic for TiTTWIS!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 8 December 2003 15:14 (twenty years ago) link

I am glad to see you popping back in, Pink! I miss you!

THAT Kate (kate), Monday, 8 December 2003 15:14 (twenty years ago) link

Hey Pinky! Make it more regular, yo?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 8 December 2003 15:18 (twenty years ago) link

Sorry, didn't mean to seem to ignore you, Sarah McL. That's really freaky. Some of that new agey psychicky stuff really quite disturbs me, and I think things like what you are describing is why.

THAT Kate (kate), Monday, 8 December 2003 15:21 (twenty years ago) link

Hey I have been here Kate - feel my presence! mwah ha ha!
I saw you kick that boy's ass, I cheered! ;-)

x-post

Sarah - that's cool but freaky. I dig John Edwards too (even though J laughs at me!) but it must be weird to experience it first hand. How do you feel about it?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 8 December 2003 15:26 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know, to be honest. I think that she is most likely imagining she had this dream as a way to try to handle her mom's death. As we were cleaning up Grandmother's apartment, my mom kept exclaiming, "Well, maybe it really was her time to go," just because there was so much cat hair everywhere and she was a major pack rat. I don't think that justifies her death, but anyway... I'm sure the death came as a shock to her and she's trying to give herself soothing thoughts.

I once felt certain I had seen my great-Grandmother's ghost when we lived at her old house. And my sister swears she saw our great-Grandfather's ghost. Supposedly, he was very angry and smacked her leg. She screamed and awoke us all. And there on her leg was a huge red handprint. But also, I was 16 at the time and very naive.

My point is that I have an eerie belief in some of that stuff, but I basically wish to forget it ever happened. It freaks me out. None of it was pleasant.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:10 (twenty years ago) link

I've seen a ghost but don't believe in them. How does that work?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:11 (twenty years ago) link

I very much believe in ppl coming back to 'visit' their loved ones. I just hope to God that mine don't ever come back to visit me because I really couldn't handle it. This thought/fear keeps me awake at night. :-(

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:13 (twenty years ago) link

I'm all for anything that brings people comfort. But things that freak people out and/or really bother them, well, that disturbs me.

THAT Kate (kate), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:15 (twenty years ago) link

Slow down slow down sweet talkin’ woman slow down
You got me runnin’, you got me searchin’.
Hold on hold on sweet talkin’ lover hold on
It’s so sad if that’s the way it’s over.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:15 (twenty years ago) link

Well, that's a good question Markelby! It was so long ago now (10 years!) that it's easier for me to rationalize. Perhaps it was just a very vivid dream (the part with me seeing my Grandma). Perhaps I was sick. But then my Dad claimed several times to see/feel ghosts in his house when he first moved in (an old plantation house) and he is in no way new agey or spacey.

I guess what I'm saying is that I HALF believe in it all, but I'm scared of it. The night of the supposed Grandma/Great-grandfather visits (yes, they were both the same night), I prayed harder than I ever had before in my life that unless it was completely necessary, please god don't let anything like that ever happen again. It didn't.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:18 (twenty years ago) link

When I am in bed & scared that I might be due a visit, I always just keep thinking over & over again that they would know that I wouldn't want it & hence stay away.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:19 (twenty years ago) link

I am well and at work. I love the first part of that sentence but not the second.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:28 (twenty years ago) link

Ha. Sorry I killed the thread with my weird talk of the afterlife. Forget I ever said anything about it! I command you!

I am printing out cover letters and resumes for my position. There are twenty-something so far.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:09 (twenty years ago) link

Do you command us from BEYOND THE GRAVE?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:16 (twenty years ago) link

Hi. I'm back. Canada is nice. I left some litter at various people's houses but otherwise I hopefully kept it as good shape as I found it. Perhaps with a smidge more hermetically-expressed angst or silliness than it had to begin with, I dunno.

Anyway. I hope people's lives have been in the boring-to-wonderful range while I was gone, and I didn't miss anything tragic in the last week and a half.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:48 (twenty years ago) link

i've missed these threads. what is the meaning?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:49 (twenty years ago) link

There is a part in the Stills - Ready For It that gives me the chills. Damn this is good.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:59 (twenty years ago) link

It's um... part 6.

But yeah, hey.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:42 (twenty years ago) link

Part 6, eh? I thought there was a part 5 before part [blank]. I also thought it would annoy people more if I accidnetally created two part 6s than missed a number out :)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:43 (twenty years ago) link

I thought the unlabelled Mystery Part was part 6, but if not, let's all make up stuff we said on part 6 before Mark deleted it for the good of mankind.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:44 (twenty years ago) link

Nope, it's 6. Doesn't matter, it ain't no thang, and more importantly, who's counting?

luna (luna.c), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:45 (twenty years ago) link

Six was the one with the scandalous debate. It got deleted. And I revealed my exciting double life.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:46 (twenty years ago) link

I bought a replacement game-cube, and they gave me two free games, which I wasn't expecting! Four Zelda games on one disc, wahoo! Goodbye outside, hello sore eyes.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:46 (twenty years ago) link

I was stunned at Julia's double life. I don't think I'll ever see her the same way.

jel, the Nintendo website was crazy for awhile after they put that bonus disc out! (I was trying to register my copy of Mario/Luigi Superstar.) The GameCube's #1 now that they've dropped the price.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:48 (twenty years ago) link

It's winter anyway, nothing to see outside. I just remembered that I have an unplayed Myst that got lost under my bed. Hmm. Yay, another way to evade reality!

Xpost, hahaha, yes, it's SHOCKING!

JuliaA (j_bdules), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

Do you have to shop somewhere incognito for the ... uh, "accessories" for the double life, or can you get them online?

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:51 (twenty years ago) link

Thank god for mail order.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:51 (twenty years ago) link

You can get anything online. It's just amazing. And it helps keep my identity more secret, see?

JuliaA (j_bdules), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:54 (twenty years ago) link

Aren't you...JuliaA?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:56 (twenty years ago) link

By day, yes.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:59 (twenty years ago) link

I've just signed up for an Econ. class. God help me.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:28 (twenty years ago) link

I was almost a double major with Economics in college. I changed my mind when I realized I could just quit with the Econ then and still have a minor in it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 8 December 2003 19:58 (twenty years ago) link

The thread where I bitch-slapped Jess was deleted?

Sarah, I think yr right and this is probably your mom's way of dealing with your grandmother's death. I forgot about the yardstick until I was cleaning out my car yesterday. :) Maybe yr grandmother will visit me in Oak Cliff.

*sigh* Since I got out of the hospital I've been feeling pretty good. No cloud of gloom over my head. Every day I've gotten up excited about whatever's going to happen. Gone about a day's tasks with a smile on my face. But now. . .

I said I was going back to school tomorrow and now I'm filled with dread. I've been anxious and nervous all day. This sucks! I'm really starting to think I need to look for another job. But the market is soo bad now. And for once in a long time, with the help of the 2nd job at the bar, I'm able to pay my bills on time and start thinking of saving up for a new car. If I got a different job it would definitely be a lowering of my standard of living.

The school called a bit ago but I was too scared to answer. They wanted to know whether or not I was returning tomorrow. My pysch gave me a letter releasing me to return on Wed., but I feel I should just get it over with. I've been gone for two weeks now and have no more sick days. Each day away is costing me money. :(

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:14 (twenty years ago) link

My boss is making initial calls to folks hoping to take my job. He's really funny about it because he hates interviewing, so he's shaking a lot and acting nervous.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:14 (twenty years ago) link

It's good to new that sometimes the interviewer is just as or more nervous than you. Works better than the picturing them naked thing. (since I just do that with everyone anyway, if they're interviewing me or not)

oops (Oops), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:17 (twenty years ago) link

What about ugly people? Wouldn't some interviewers wonder why you had this curious tendency to wince rather frequently?

JuliaA (j_bdules), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:23 (twenty years ago) link

ok, i'm really freaking out a bout going back to schoool. i haven't called them yet. i haven't done anything. i'm just sitting here biting off all my nails.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:31 (twenty years ago) link

See that's why this new strategy works better, Julia!

Sam, it'll be okay. Take it from me, stewing about it will just make it worse. Call them and get that load of your back.

oops (Oops), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:37 (twenty years ago) link

Ditto to oops. The anticipation is the worst.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:39 (twenty years ago) link

My brain is continuing its downward slide toward complete and total malfunction. Ergo, I can't really recall what I was going to say to specific people. All I can remember thinking I was going to post here was that I (a.) wish I could've been here when the mentioned-about debate was going on so I could be clued in instead of looking on in complete askance, (b.) wish I hadn't typed out the stupid shit I said in that Wal-Mart thread and that I could have a more level head, (c.) wish I hadn't read those album reviews I read earlier today in an attempt to rest my brain, (d.) wish things could get better, and (e.) wish I could be as fearless and sassy as one of those Sweet Potato Queens I've been reading about. And I wish each and every single one of you a fabulous evening/day/whatevah.

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 03:28 (twenty years ago) link

God help me, I am really really really really really hungover and I doubt I'll get a thing done today. My colleague just gave me a custard donut for no apparent reason, so that helped. I still just feel awful. Need sleep. Though I feel pretty good, mentally. I think I need to go dancing more.

THAT Kate (kate), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 10:05 (twenty years ago) link

Ooh let's go dancin'!! Hope you're feeling better soon Kate!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 10:08 (twenty years ago) link

I always forget how fun dancing is! And I'm so glad that HSA shares my dancing technique - i.e. dance in such a completely stupid fashion that no one else on the dance floor will feel self conscious, because there cannot possibly be anyone making as big a fool of themselves as you are! Hooray!

Groo, my stomach. Sipping water s l o w l y!

THAT Kate (kate), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 10:09 (twenty years ago) link

I'm the same, Kate - barely able to focus on anyone or anything. And I have a headache, which I hardly ever get with hangovers. It was a good good night though. J-e is kinda getting into the ILE swing, no?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 11:30 (twenty years ago) link

(I don't call him HSA because I don't want people to know his name, I call him HSA because he likes it!)

It's really too bad his mum couldn't make it, that would have been fun.

THAT Kate (kate), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 11:32 (twenty years ago) link

Hope you are okay Sam.

I am stuffing myself with biscuits and having mixed feelings about a Christmas bonus I just got. Mixed because, while it's great to get a bonus and I never have had one before, they are STILL fucking about with my new contract (should have been done in AUGUST) so I don't get the full amount but some pro rata fraction because officially I still work PT.

Now I'm going to the cashpoint and then getting a bagel and sitting in the sun reading my Robert B Parker for an hour.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 11:53 (twenty years ago) link

I want to go dancing too! Yesterday, I was dancing in my car seat (ha ha, that makes me sound like a baby) listening to a mix I made my sister with the Rapture, Kelis, ESG, Kylie Minogue, and LCD Soundsystem.

I did absolutely nothing last night. Ok, I wrote ONE Christmas card, but that's about it.

I need my coffee.

Huck, if you could see me now, you'd know I'm sticking my tongue out at you.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 January 2004 18:07 (twenty years ago) link

I made it back. The snow didn't kill me. Hooray!
The Field Museum was weird.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 9 January 2004 22:21 (twenty years ago) link

The Field Museum is awesome. Is that the one that has the re-created old-time town? That always creeped me out. Felt like I was on a Twilight Zone set.

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 January 2004 22:26 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't see that. There were some recreated Polynesian stores. That was neat, as was the Egyptian tomb. But the rooms and rooms of stuffed animals were weird, why not just go to a zoo and see live animals? I think someone on ILX said that it was fun if you were wasted, which I can definitely see. The best was coming out of the museum and seeing the skyline and the partially frozen lake with the snow coming down.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 9 January 2004 22:31 (twenty years ago) link

I miss Sarah.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 January 2004 22:36 (twenty years ago) link

She misses you guys too. She has the internet at her new job but since it's her first week, she doesn't want to mess around online too much. But I'll make her get on at home this weekend.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 9 January 2004 22:40 (twenty years ago) link

I don't remember there being that many stuffed animals. I know there's that one gorilla, Bushman I think, who used to be at the Lincoln Park Zoo forever and was beloved by the city. Now that I think about it I don't remember much of what is there. Time for another visit.
Do you know that each museum has a free day? You should definitely check out the Art Institute---the free day is Tuesday I think. Though I think there's never a fee, just a suggested donation. Which is cool cause if you go there and it's about to close in an hour you can choose to give just a couple bucks. I'm not into art much but it's one of the best museums in the world. Plus, you can re-create scenes from Ferris Bueller.

oops (Oops), Friday, 9 January 2004 22:42 (twenty years ago) link

We actually went to the Art Institute last week on the free day, with Sarah's mom, and I saw that the Field Museum has free days on Monday and Tuesday, but I really needed to get out of the apartment today. What's even lamer is that I had to pay the out-of-state price for my ticket, $2 extra, because I don't have any Illinois ID yet.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 9 January 2004 22:47 (twenty years ago) link

Plus, you can re-create scenes from Ferris Bueller.

I SO want to do this.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 January 2004 22:55 (twenty years ago) link

Nick, much as we miss Sarah, I think I speak for all of us except Oops when I say that we're glad you're posting more these days!

Seconded!

luna (luna.c), Friday, 9 January 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago) link

Oh man. That's hot.

The problem is either that (a) I'm a pussy or (b) I care too much about this place to screw them over. But I'm constantly exhausted and depressed because of this stress and I'm bored and there is a better land!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 9 January 2004 23:39 (twenty years ago) link

Thanks for the kind words Chris. I actually feel like I haven't been on ILX that much lately. I just pop on, read a few select threads, write a few nonsequiter gibberish one-liners for Ally to post to the Laugh Out Loud thread, and I'm outta there. I guess I've just gotten more efficient.

NA (Nick A.), Saturday, 10 January 2004 02:40 (twenty years ago) link

Let's not lock it till we break 5000!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 10 January 2004 09:01 (twenty years ago) link

Hmm... Well, I guess this isn't locked quite yet, so...

Yeah, I miss you guys too. I haven't updated my blog in quite a while either. I rarely check email. And I even forgot to turn on my phone for about 24 hours so I had all these messages from my family. Whoopsies.

I reak (sp?) of smoke from going to the Canasta show, but it was a lot of fun. I saw jaymc and kenan two weekends in a row! Crazy.

This morning, Nick and I went on a huge adventure in the Gold Coast a.k.a. Fancy Town and also saw the Chicago HIstorical Society Museum or whatever it was called.

My job is fine. The workers are all disgruntled, but also they've been there for a really long time. I just feel like, hey, I put in my time so I get to live in this great city. It's worth it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Sunday, 11 January 2004 06:56 (twenty years ago) link

I figured as much, Chris, but just wanted to make sure Nick didn't think otherwise.

Hi Sarah! Glad to hear your job is working out okay.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 11 January 2004 08:53 (twenty years ago) link

But the rooms and rooms of stuffed animals were weird, why not just go to a zoo and see live animals?

I felt the same way. Not much of interest in the Halls of Dead Stuffed Things. Even weirder: the botany wing (and it is a wing) was made up of fake plants. I can understand having so much respect for animals that you don't want to cage them, but plants? That's just laziness. A million square feet of museum, and the most interesting there is rocks. Oh, and that car that got hit by a meteorite. To be fair, I hear their scientists are top-notch and do renowned research, but the museum itself was a bore.

The aquarium is better. The planetarium is very cool, if you're in the mood to learn stuff. I haven't been to the Museum of Science and Industry yet, but I hear it's great, and I'm interested for the building alone. It's a stone replica of one of the plaster buildings of the White City, and it's in its original spot. Neo-classical gaudiness at its finest. They say it set architecture back 100 years.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 11 January 2004 09:12 (twenty years ago) link

I wish everyone the best of luck with their new/current/soon-to-be-ending jobs. I've noticed that that seems to be the predominant theme among the last few dozen posts or so I've read, so that's what I'm going to address. For me, my job seems to have become an escapist activity, something relaxing to look forward to, which is a bit much to wrap my brain around but I suppose this is part of the process I seem to be undergoing wherein I'll eventually become my mother.

I'd really love to address each and every single one of you and try to evince some kind of regular chattage type thing, but it's been an age and a day since I last kept up with this thread and so it would probably take an age and a day for me to type up that post. Besides, I'm fairly certain none of you would want to go through a post the size of a novella.

I've got Livejournal too -- have I mentioned that before? Yes? Have I pimped it enough on this forum? Maybe? Ok, let me just send it over the edge then.

De-Lurking in the Modern Age (my probably over-solipsistic journal)

There you go. Now you can read all the possibly overdramatic yammering I keep off this forum. ;)

Take care, you guys.

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 11 January 2004 09:30 (twenty years ago) link

You guys wanna know something weird? Based on my experience at the Canasta show last night, I learned that shows in Chicago actually start at the time when they are advertised as starting! Quirky, huh?

NA (Nick A.), Sunday, 11 January 2004 14:32 (twenty years ago) link

What? No, that's nuts!

There's a slight wisp of a movement among Portland bands to get clubs to start shows somewhat closer to advertised times, but the only places where it's been successful... have moved to 4-band nights. Sheesh!

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 11 January 2004 17:32 (twenty years ago) link
