i was confused that they had him watching his mother die when in the earlier movies she is there after he is brought back to life on genesis, etc.

it's because the whole movie is set in an alternate timeline!

here's the quote from Spock in the film:

"Nero spared my life for one reason: so that i would know his pain. he beamed me here so i could observe his vengeance."

I figure that means that Nero told him, but let's say he didn't; that still doesn't explain why Spock would stay on the planet when he knows where the outpost is.

ok thanks i couldn't remember exact details of the movie!

Basically the Romulans changed everything by going through the black hole and killing off Kirk's dad, so now everything is slightly different.

maybe he was secretly afraid of simon pegg's little sidekick guy but didn't want to say it

It's not really a proper Star Trek movie even, it just riffs on the mythology. But's it's my favourite of the lot.

this is otm, even if my opinion is completely different. reboots like this are basically just really expensive fan fiction.

i dunno, i dont know anything abt the original series really and it was still really entertaining

max, Saturday, 23 January 2010 12:55 (fourteen years ago) link

that's kinda my point....it's not of a piece with the rest of the series, it's just another 'pretty people in peril' JJ Abrams sci-fi soap opera with ST characters and a bunch of fan service references plugged in.

ok

i kind of agree with this - i think u could make an argument that this moment in pop culture is kind of like an era of fanfic, especially the whole 'prestigious directors doing comic books' thingamabob

The Prestigious JJ Abrams

perhaps The Prestigious Rob Zombie is next

ang lee!

richie aprile (rockapads), Saturday, 23 January 2010 18:40 (fourteen years ago) link

I can buy nolan and singer being comic nerds but was ang lee any kind of fan of the hulk?

"No, just because you don't have to have anything but the most fleeting knowledge of its parent shows and movies to fully enjoy it."

Cranking Beastie Boys in the kid kirk sequence wasn't enjoyable until I found out upthread that it might be a reference to an obscure tape of Shatner throwing a hissy fit over pronouncing "sabotage" for the animated series.

Philip Nunez, Saturday, 23 January 2010 18:51 (fourteen years ago) link

fwiw i recall reading Abrams wasn't a big fan of Star Trek.

richie aprile (rockapads), Saturday, 23 January 2010 18:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, it was really the other screenwriters who knew all the lore and such. And c'mon the SABBATAGE thing is not something Abrams would bother with, that's internet hooey.

Wasn't sure where else to post this but Mr Veg got the Giacchino score and it is fantastic to listen to. Highly recommend.
