I'm wary of the "modern" furniture from those scammy online warehouses with cheesy "Italian" names and a little too much kooky/European '80s sensibility, but I'm really really tempted by this couch.

Reclines into a sofa bed, btw.

i kinda like that one

harbl, Thursday, 21 January 2010 16:25 (fourteen years ago) link

For the low low price of about $650-700.

a lot of designy furniture just looks like it would age so badly, if i paid a lot for something i would want to be able to keep it for a long time

harbl, Thursday, 21 January 2010 16:26 (fourteen years ago) link

that looks so much like my great aunt's yellow couch. her kids just persuaded her to take the plastic off of it after 15-20 years.

most of the modern euro stuff is incredibly well-made and requires less upkeep than antiques or reproductions of older styles

Lamp, Thursday, 21 January 2010 16:32 (fourteen years ago) link

no i don't mean the quality, just how it looks. i would get tired of a lot of it.

harbl, Thursday, 21 January 2010 16:34 (fourteen years ago) link

Depends on what your eye & brain consider a "basic" couch, I suppose. (Or a basic table, or chair, etc.) If you expect to see something in a certain style, you're not always mentally confronting it again and again -- your eye just passes over.

If you think of the style as being bold or loud or obtrusive, then yes, maybe that would wear after a while.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Thursday, 21 January 2010 16:38 (fourteen years ago) link

yah i dont think that any furniture you buy will seem continually fresh or obtrusive or w/e - fading into the background is just kinda what furniture does even the strongest pieces

i do think i like modern/design-y stuff because it feels to me the 'best suited' to contemp urban enviornments - its weird going to ppl's places and seeing heavy antique chesterfields in their living rooms

Lamp, Thursday, 21 January 2010 16:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Agreed, altho I grew up in a 1903 house with Victorian furniture so it's possible I'm also wanting a fresher aesthetic in reaction to that.

When I was little, before I knew anything about "modern" or contemporary design, I preferred Craftsman/Prairie over all other styles. Of course in 1988 you could buy Stickley pianos at estate sales because no one wanted them. O_o

contemporary stuff is fine, i don't really like antiques or whatever either

I bought a Jed armchair from Habitat. It has changed my life. It might even have changed my music habits as I am more likely to *stop* and sit down and really, really listen.

djh, Thursday, 21 January 2010 17:05 (fourteen years ago) link

Oooh, we've been thinking about a Jed; we've got a Viktor sofa and it'd go great with that.

brain thoughts (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 21 January 2010 18:21 (fourteen years ago) link

It's surprisingly comfy, for a chair with a wooden back. You will start listening to Rune Grammofon on your Alessandros. I'm sure I've a discount code somewhere for Habitat. Will post if I find.

Maybe in the right room it wouldn't be as noticeable.

Nice, I like the Trento too. I'm in the throes of trying to move house, hopefully to somewhere a little bigger, which will necessitate all kinds of new furniture.

Abbott: cannot believe yr s-i-l's luck on that. If we can find somewhere with the space then will be *hunting down* some repro MvdR or Eames style seatage.

After I get an apartment, I hope! What I really want is the Reese sectional from Room & Board in black leather. But go figure, I don't have $4000 burning a hole in my non-existent savings account.

yes very nice indeed but i prefer the fabric version.

jed_, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:33 (fourteen years ago) link

I actually do too, the leather is a compromise -- unforch one that almost doubles the price.

I don't like the new curved versions, there's nowhere good to put your back for lounging. The L-shaped sectional is where my heart is.

one month passes...

The Hi-Can bed, ladies & gents! I don't even want the speakers & television that are built in, I just want the outer furniture. Maybe the lights would be nice.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeese? I wonder if I could get one custom-built by someone more local...is that evil?

Although hah hah good luck getting the vertical pieces up some stairs, down some halls, through some doorways, and into a normal bedroom.

How about this valet/wardrobe? Not really big enough for any but the most minimalist wardrobe, but hot damn it's handsome.

I have a large glass tabletop that I might want to use as an addl kitchen counter/work surface. I need some kind of shelving to put under it, that will support the counter and whatever equipment I put on it. Standard counter height is 36" so any combination of shelving should come out to around that.

Suggestions? Advice?

Thoughts:

http://images.containerstore.com/images/catalog/82763/GalvanizedCubeWineBar_xl.jpg

I like this steel cube system but at 14" high each, the math doesn't work.

Plastic shelving like Ladodo (Container Store) and the Cubitec stuff is close to the right height, but will it hold up under a lot of weight and let me store pots and pans underneath, or will the uprights end up bowed in three months?

Also why is all the plastic stuff HELLA EXPENSIVE, FOR PIECES OF PLASTIC??

I think that's about 40" which could work...but I don't think they sell Meltorp products in the US?? Search item not found on the IKEA US website.
