I would revive this thread frequently but I always forget what it's named and how one revives threads in the first place. Where am I?

there's nothing inherently stupid about finding the Arcade Fire guy's voice horrible. He sounds like a turkey doing an Isaac Brock impersonation.

i like their big ballads better than the horn freakouts that still show their "fusion" origins. but some people i respect, if not totally identify with, really like those early, would-be jazzbo records.

i think there's even a peter cetera solo single i like, but i can't remember the name.

HEY, it just occurred to me that the reason why i love all that Kompakt stuff is cuz those people DO excite me/take things to another level/one-up people and also remind me here and there of sounds that i remember from way back when (or at least they seem to be inspired by some of those sounds at times.) In a way.

Is Green Day's American Idiot album as good as the side-long "From The Cradle To The Grave" by the Subhumans? Cuz that Subhumans album is one of my faves. But then they are one of my fave bands. Same idea as Godfather's song "Birth School Work Death" only earlier. Although the Godfathers song is nice too. (But maybe not as nice as "this damn nation".) also, i own Cursive's Domestica, but I only listened to it once. I will have to play it again.

I have a Cursive song ("Radiator Hums") on my iPod, but I don't know where it came from. I mean, I don't remember downloading it or anything. I like it better now than when I heard Domestica once, five years ago, in a car.

well, lots of the albums on this list are best-of reissue type things (lee dorsey, george strait, etc).they are still "albums," even if not "proper" ones!

last killing joke i ever liked much was i think *revelations* (or that *ha!* live 10-inch thing, if that counts - i forget which came first). but i know some people have other opinions about the matter!

anyone who listens to as many records as Chuck eddy or christgau or others isn't someone whose opinion I take seriously.

"is it weird that as soon as chuck eddy recommends something (like frank kogan's book), i lose interest in it?"

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 6 June 2005 20:53 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't hate chuck, i just hate the idea of a psuedo-respected 40something music editor/writer with the rhetorical skills of an ADHD 12-year-old.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:03 (eighteen years ago) link

okay, so you hate the "idea" of chuck or what you think he is or represents. not the actual person. is that like loving the sinner and hating the sin?

and what's with the "pseudo-respected"? i respect him. plenty of people do. yer projecting. sorry for picking on yer original post. it just seemed like one of the LEAST weird things i could think of.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 6 June 2005 21:26 (eighteen years ago) link

no, i was being an idiot and fishing i guess.

but i was surprised at how definitive was my reaction.

"psuedo-respected" is a cryptic way of saying that a few people on ilm come rattling to his defense when he's in an argument, in a vitriolic way that strikes me as strange... but i don't get the sense that he's known or respected very far outside of rock-crit circles. i guess that means "somewhat respected" rather than the vague and condescending "psuedo-respected."

whatever.
