Graham shot down James Brown, unless he counts as a 90s artist. There is no ruling yet as to whether the weapon used in the shooting is acceptable under thread-rules.

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

I can't stand Beck.

I think there's a Minuteman/Minutemen confusion going on.

James Brown counts as a 90s artist surely - was there not a MEGAMIX and a single in about 97??

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't like the Stone Roses. And I realised the other day I don't like T.Rex either.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Slade!

Big Audio Dynamite!

The Firm!

The Bangles!

Was Not Was!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't care much for Ministry. Most Kool & The Gang, Ella Fitzgerald, Weezer and Basement Jaxx stuff i've heard has been in-one-ear-out-the-other. The Human League makes it but barely. I've never heard Spacemen 3. X is WAY overrated.

Joy Division ?

Patrick, Friday, 20 September 2002 11:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

People, people. Abruptum! Everybody loves Abruptum, right?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

So, everybody likes Gene Vincent then, eh? If not, surely we all got a little love for Buddy Holly.

So, far JB is the only one out there it looks like everybody's giving a chance to.

christoff (christoff), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't like Buddy Holly, sorry.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 September 2002 11:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

btw, what's with the bold type
What bold type? Re the thread, it's nice for once to be able to say I don't like, REM, Stone Roses, Elvis & Nirvana...and not get into trouble.

Erm, should I get me coat?

Jez, Friday, 20 September 2002 11:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sammy Davis Jnr?

kinski (kinski), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

''I think there's a Minuteman/Minutemen confusion going on.''

OK minutemen were a band on SST who released the best alb evah (OK maybe not but it's a v v good rec) ('Double nickels on the dime'). the other band is a recent thing and I heard one single which I thought was a joke (in a bad way).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm down with Sammy, man. I love that cat. You know that.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

there was bold type, i swear. it's gone though.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, Tom, I don't hate Madonna.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 September 2002 12:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

I shoot down: Chackha Khan (occasional good stuff w/ Rufus doesn't excuse dreary solo career), Motorhead (like the occasional song, but too repetitive for me to LOVE 'em), Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Britney Spears, Bon Jovi, and for what it's worth Gene Loves Jezebell and Queen.

Now, if we assume that dave225 wasn't serious about not liking all candidates xcept James Brown (tho he could be, correct me if I'm wrong dave) that leaves us with:

James Brown

The Bay City Rollers

GWAR

The Cure

Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps

The Spinners

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes

Little Richard

Al Green

Buzzcocks

Undertones

The Shangri-Las

The Clash

Magazine

Louis Prima

The Skatalites

New Vauderville Band

Slade

Chic

Human League

St.Etienne

David Bowie

The Ronnetes

Mercury Rev

Johnny Cash

Can

AC/DC

Huey Lewis & The News

Madonna

Brian Eno

Marvin Gaye

Big Audio Dynamite

The Firm

The Bangles

Was Not Was

Joy Division

Abruptum

And, oddly enough:

Ted Nungent

Sproyton Layer

Eminem

Anal Count

Sammy Davis Jr.

(Graham's pre-1990 ban is just a sad and shows how out of touch he is with The Kids- I should know, I'm one.)

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 20 September 2002 12:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

... I was serious... not that I don't like all of the above.. but I thought that they had all been shot down in some form... Except for the ones that I'm shooting down:
Gene Vincent, Bay City Rollers, Ted Nugent, Sproyton Layer, Eminem, Anal Cunt, GWAR, The Spinners, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Undertones, New Vaudeville Band, Slade, The Firm..

Can't say I love any of them. There are others that I can't say I love, but don't really have a problem with...

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I really do only like about three records made before 1990, is this so hard to understand?

Graham (graham), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

the cure. peeoww!

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well actually, yes! Cos there are tons of great records before 1990! Obv!

Sarah (starry), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think everybody secretly loves BARRY WHITE ok ok at least the song that was on Ally McBeal when she dances about in those WHACKY unisex bogz0r.

I wd like to think everyone likes KATE BUSH but when faced with some of the Lionheart/Hounds of Luv (hammer)HORRORS I cd see why they do not.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well no one's bothered to tell me about them.

Oh hang on, Barry White wins. End of thread.

Graham (graham), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Barry [ ] is substantially challenged

george gosset (gegoss), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

I love the way you only italicised those 1st 2 syllables.

Ray M (rdmanston), Friday, 20 September 2002 13:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

"how can you possibly nominate the Stones with their 25+ year track record of complete and utter shit
but this "they recorded some crap stuff therefore they are DISQUALIFIED" thing is ridiculous. I defy anyone to name me a musician who didn't disgrace themselves on record at least once.

Contradiction, Shaky Mo? ;-) "

Sorry Ned, but my Rolling Stones comment was directed at AlexinNYC, who developed the "recording of crap=disqualified" rubrick. His nomination of the Rolling Stones is *his* contradiction (since he doesn't deny they've put out tons of embarassing shit). I wouldn't disqualify the Stones on those grounds, but Alex should have. I disqualify the Stones on the grounds that they really just aren't that fantastic, even at their peak. I don't love them. I'm sure there's plenty of people here who hate them.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 20 September 2002 15:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Does anyone hate the Undertones, Chuck Berry, or New Order?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think James Brown, despite Graham, is as clear a victor as we can have, which as I'm sure you can all guess is a-ok by me.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't think Kool and the Gang has been fully shot down.

What about Fela? Afrika Bambaataa? Portishead? Massive Attack?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

If we are looking for something everyone likes, we have to accept blanket dismissals like Graham's, and we are almost certainly doomed. If we are looking for something no one dislikes, we don't, since we have no evidence that Graham (not wanting to pick on you, Graham, but yours is the clearest and hugest blanket!) is familiar with, say, Louis Prima.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 September 2002 18:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'll say prince sign o the times era.
at least i'd like 2 see some one believably say say
they didn't like the *song* 'sign o the times'.
other than that chic are still a go-er,
and i'd say love unlimited too. come on who
could hate them ?

did anyone say phil spector last time ?

piscesboy, Friday, 20 September 2002 19:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think we'll have to wait for Graham to say he specifically dislikes James Brown before the final vote.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 20 September 2002 19:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

He's bound to love some 1990's record that samples "Funky Drummer", anyway...I say we elect James Brown our brand new funky president!

Mr. David Robert Jones is still in the running

brg30 (brg30), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

"I really do only like about three records made before 1990, is this so hard to understand?"

It is hard to understand, actually. Is it because it's "before your era" or something? Might it be that you simply haven't heard *ENOUGH* music that was recorded prior to 1990? Also, it's not like 1990 was some crucial watermark year like 1969 or 1977 (or ever 1994). Why 1990?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm officially shooting down Kool & the Gang. Apart from "Jungle Boogie," they have precious little in their catalogue worth salvaging (especially nonsense like "She's Fresh").

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Maybe we should re-jigger this to say SPECIFIC ALBUMS that everone loves....this would eschew the whole "yeah, well their later work was crap" argument (an argument I used, incidentally).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 September 2002 19:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

And I realised the other day I don't like T.Rex either.

Tom, you hurt me in my heart.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 September 2002 20:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Allow me to officially remove David Robert from the running.

Wait, shit, I didn't realize I was bumping a four month old thread. I guess that was kinda pointless. Nevertheless, Groove Armada are shit.
