it's a really obscure kate bush song. pretty sure this is the first time a dj has played it before

Dettmann up for #150. His online mixes have been surprisingly flat so I hope he notches it up a bit for this one.

dettmann is pretty low-key again, but i dug it on first listen

have been enjoying the Glasser and Pixel mixes lately.

the Solar Bears was shocking though. picking 16 records and crossfading between them after 2 minutes is not a mix.

224 also looks good, seefeel and slowdive and cabaret voltaire...
and 226 is photek

koogs, Monday, 28 February 2011 17:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, the Endless House one is great.

I was kind of disappointed how obvious the choices were on the Photek mix

groovypanda, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 21:31 (thirteen years ago) link

joe smooth's 'promised blend' instant coffee (haitch), Wednesday, 2 March 2011 23:40 (thirteen years ago) link

photek's getting caned in the comments section. probably rightly so - it's a pretty lazy selection.

Been really digging the CREEP mix from January, among others, specifically the overlap between Rock Yo Hips and All of the Lights, whose instrumental works surprisingly well once it's used as a backing track for things that are not Kanye. Also the Dark0 track at the end is A++.

is there a way to subscribe to fact without having to read all the london party fodder? a different rss or something? i like the mag but it's getting hard to follow.

cuteforce, Wednesday, 11 May 2011 01:46 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I used to check in with FACT every day but it's getting increasingly difficult to want to for anything other than the mixes. The reviews seem to be of the same artists all the time and be either oozing praise or suggesting promise of better things yet to come, and some of the writing seems to be getting a bit sloppy. Obviously there's still some fantastic work in there and the odd curveball news item but its getting very scene-scentric at the expense of what first caught my eye about it.

I sctually really miss the print editions. They were so well put together and aesthetically pleasing. I know the remit of it now seems to be UK bass music with the odd periphery features, but they used to cover more ground and it wasn't bad at all.

just listened to it, it's amazing. Needed a klaxon to sound, not sure the rest of the office would have appreciated it though!

Neil S, Monday, 23 May 2011 13:22 (twelve years ago) link

are any of these mixes that amazing? they dont really sound that essential to me. its just some promo thing for most of them, slung together to get them some extra coverage. i rarely hear these mixes, and stop in my tracks to think FUCK this is good. well apart from the kode 9 jungle mix.

"These FACT mixes are out of control! How do they expect their readers to digest half of these mixes when they come so thick and fast. Same goes for some of the other blogs/ sites out there. It's just overwhelming."

OTM

who can keep track? i dont have the time. wish i could. one a month would be nice to make it more special. but i suppose thats impossible when you want to keep getting hits.

Dylan Ettinger mix up on Fact magazine.

celebrating the really romantic new wave tracks that inspired his new album.

But I agree with the points upthread.

I likened it to a chef who gets to go to so many restaurants, they can never cook at home.
Thats how I feel with internet mixes, there is like 6 per week that are great, I never really have time to do my own mixes or do my own searching for tunes.

and the motivation is gone, when you know you could get an amazing ambient/dubstep/minimal/deephouse mix in seconds from a world class DJ.

I remember when it was essential mix on Radio 1 and mix CDs and that was waiting for a mix you liked, then rinsing it for weeks/months.

Yes, another website that needs to learn the meaning of the phrase “at a glance” when it comes to doing lists.

It struck me as a list of records people are pretending to like, rather than actually liking. Dull and worthy, as we old folk used to call it.

Was there a distinct moment that FACT essentially became the buzzfeed of music sites, or is it just endemic to its untrammeled decline into clickbait, irrelevant-news, and manufactured-attitude fueled mediocrity?

ed.b, Friday, 19 June 2015 19:36 (eight years ago) link

Lol-hyperbole, but still, am I mistaken for thinking it was waaaay more relevant and interesting four to five years ago?

ed.b, Friday, 19 June 2015 19:37 (eight years ago) link

probably when they redesigned their site, early this year i think?

saer, Friday, 19 June 2015 19:46 (eight years ago) link

they had good lists, even though i agree there are too many lists on the internet

but they pointed me toward some interesting music i might have otherwise overlooked (new and old music)

they still do: http://www.factmag.com/tag/for-club-use-only/

i still like fact, but is there any point to their singles reviews section? no one seems to have much of an opinion on anything. like theyre all too worried about being told they dont know what theyre talking about.

very sad to learn that FACT will no longer be publishing written content. we had some golden years back there and i'm proud of what we did - sometimes adding vital context and sometimes just noising up diplo for the lols. the real FACT magazine was truly the friends i made alo--

This really blows. I read the magazine since it came out on paper in 2003. I can't imagine returning to Fact if it will be all-video, personally (but I guess I'm lol old).
